    How to get better tone:
    1. Keep in mind that fuzz pedals are really powerful, so don't turn all of the pots to 10 or you might get a huge crappy lo-fi mud.
    2. Fuzz pedals are meant to sound fuzzy, fat, and dirty. If you like softer sounds, this is not the pedal for you.

Brian Hu really depends on the fuzz pedal that’s used. Big muffs don’t do subtle well but some fuzz faces, tone benders, and their clones do subtle very well

@@ryanlusby569 Yes, into certain amps. And certain low wattage amps don't take certain fuzz pedals well. It's a chemistry thing. This pedal, that amp ==> Heaven, This pedal, another amp ==> Hell. (For you.) Everyone's mileage varies.

I really love my Big Muff on a clean amp. I basically try to get the amp as clean as possible before I activate it. You can adjust the sound so much with your guitar volume knobs or and eq pedal. Also Power Tube Distortion seams to work, but using a fuzz pedal with the Amp Gain sounds horrible in my setting.

This is exactly why I got the velvet fuzz. My main amp is a twin reverb and cranking that thing is just not an option 99% of the time, but I still wanted fuzz tones. The velvet fuzz definitely delivers

    • @WarrenPostma
      @WarrenPostma 3 роки тому

That's weird because my Fender 94 TwinAmp (EvilTwin) actually does sound great when it's NOT cranked, and I wonder if it's a fluke, or it's just my own subjective confirmation bias operating. I'd like to (post covid) take my amp to a jam night and hear what other players think about its clean and fuzz tones.

Yhup. I like to run fuzz and octave-fuzz pedals into either a cranked, overdriven tube-amp, or an overdrive or distortion pedal. Fattens and smooths the fuzz and adds more harmonic-overtones.

  • @CaptPostmod

The Velvet Fuzz is overall a really awesome pedal for someone like me who is stuck playing through the clean channel of random backline amps at gigs all the time. My only complaint is that the Tone knob seems mostly decorative. With past Big Muffs I've had, turning the tone down gave me a faux-bass, American Woman-y tone and cranking it gave me more of a Rattish sizzle. Turning the Tone knob on the Velvet Fuzz either direction doesn't really seem to do anything. Might be something that could be improved in V3?

Appreciate the demo and comparison. The Velvet is a very nice versatile pedal and sounds great overall, but I had one for awhile and didn't feel like it sounded as good fuzz pedal wise as my Dunlop BC108 Hendrix FF. Granted I needed to stack the FF with an od pedal (Xotic SL Drive in super bass mode), into a clean set amp. The Velvet didn't seem to capture all of the harmonic nuances & "chaos" of the JHF-1 in my book, maybe a little too smooth. Another option, if you like your current fuzz pedal is to get a Catalinbread DLS MKIII to stack it with. Anyway, nice demo Travis.

Hotone KOMP at 5. tone controls mid way ---> Velvet fuzz. On fat. Fuzz at noon. Bright at 3pm. ----> Orange AD30 modern channel. Gain @ 10:30am. Tone controls fairly mid range all @ 1pm ish biased towards mids. Gain amount gives you perfect wider power chord breath whilst the velvet on fat still collapses in on itself with help from compressor pushing the note past the initial chord hit and then turns crusty and fuzzy folding inwards whilst sustaining. My fave fuzz pedal and I have a Maestro Fuzztone fz-1s. ;) Thanks for sucha great fuzz. :D

    great concept !!
if you want that sound, you want that entire chain...
with the distortion that that "cranked amp" produced (overdriven) for Hendrix
also, if you plug your FF into a mixer straight, be it your USB interface (a focusrite or anything), you can't get what Hendrix got, cause one stage is missing.... where distortion comes about...
I really think this video is enlightening :)

I love my Velvet Fuzz! Such a versatile pedal; I often use the "Tight" position for distorted leads, and the "Big" position w/ my Tele's volume knob rolled back for huge, heavy rhythm. I can't decide if the Velvet Fuzz or the Ego Compressor is my favorite Wampler (that I own). BTW, I run my Tele through a Voodoo-powered chain (except the VF), into my M/B Triple Wreck on the clean channel; My chain goes Polytune 2 --> Ego Compressor --> Paisley Drive --> Velvet Fuzz --> Boss TR2 --> Faux AnalogEcho Delay --> Flashback X4 --> Hall Of Fame.

To me, the velvet sounded a muddier than the fuzz face into the jtm.
I like the idea of encapsulating an entire signal chain into one pedal, of all the reviews over the past 2 years I've never heard anyone claim that's what the velvet was going after.
I use a red muck into a mark v on the fat channel (set kinda dirty) for that rockabluesy kinda tone and it kinda comes close to Travis' fuzz face example.

***** That's a common set up. The adjective I see used is "boosted." So a boosted fuzz means another pedal, usually a distortion pedal, was used to flavor the fuzz pedal. The distortion pedal, in this case, can be used as a volume pedal by having the distortion knob turned off and the volume pedal set very high. That's called a clean boost. It's a great way to salvage a distortion pedal where you don't like the sound of the distortion.

Even a fuzz that is designed to work with a clean sound sounds 10 times better on a cranked amp IMO. That's why the Velvet Deluxe could be from right to left : One switch for switching on the Velvet Fuzz, and another switch next to it to switch for an overdrive. Because fuzz sounds already really cool before an overdrive that is switched on, if you can't afford to push your amp (or don't want to push the preamp section to keep a clean sound).

  • @michaelinglis8516
    @michaelinglis8516 4 роки тому

His amp needed to be cranked, a modern amp would not need to be cranked at all(since modern amps have more gain stages, early marshalls had more headroom and less gain so they had to be cranked). But modern amps just need to be loud enough to get some sag an compression from the PT's but still just starting to break up. Ideally IMO having the amp turned up q fair bit volume wise but still on the edge of break up sounds great with fuzz. That's how I run my Marshall DSL100HR with the reverse analogman Sunlion pedal I built (It's an NPN silicon treble booster going into a PNP Germanium fuzz face with a charge pump for the -9 volts all in a single 125B+ enclosure). I know you guys knew this about modern amps vs vintage amps already but just in case anyone here tried it who might not be as experienced and found their tone to be muddy/warm/inarticulate that could be why. That's all lol.

i have the velvet fuzz and run it into a mesa mark 5 and a hot rodded marshall clone. neither amp dirty likes the velvet fuzz. it gets mushy and bassy with no definition. that's with the amps fully distorted. now, with the amps on the edge of break up, so that they get a little hairy when you dig in, the amp will explode with huge tones. i normally play a les paul standard with burst bucker pros into my set up, and have to keep the velvet fuzz set to tight. big is just too bassy for my use. it works better with single coils. i've tried stacking the fuzz in front of and behind of overdrives with mixed results. it does seem to like the Timmy overdrive behind it into a clean amp. the timmy simulates the edge of break up or slightly over driving amp. just my opinion.

So the key to getting a better fuzz tone is to purchase the Velvet. Hmmm.
I tried your pedal along with others, in search of a new fuzz to go with my Hoof and Ecstasy. I walked away with the DBA Fuzz War without having to pay to have "Wampler" stencilled on my pedal.
Wampler is one of my favourite pedal companies (must have Paisley), but you continue to fall short on fuzz. The pedal sounded pretty good through a Marshall Plexi, but it sounds god awful though a clean combo.
And what the hell were you guys thinking with the Ego Compressor?! NO Compressor should have a WET/DRY knob. Can you guys please make something nice and spongy with 2 knobs instead of 5? I would love to see a Treble Booster from you guys sometime soon, too!

I keep my on everything you guys put out, but I absolutely must get the "Paisley' before anything else (including groceries!:).
I still see you guys making a great Treble Booster though. Think about it (please).
Also, for me, I tend to go for 2-knob compressor's. I purchased the Ego, but the wet/dry just complicated things. Different strokes. :)

what mic is this? it sounds like you have some old speakers or the treble turned down on the amp. to my ears it is way off from the hendrix sound. you could put a DS1 in front of a plexi and get closer to the real thing if you EQ the amp and mic to match the original recording. anyway, I build pedals and I have always learned from you. you are a very good builder I just don't like the muffled sound you like in your guitars.

Boss Super Fuzz sounds like ass direct into my 5W practice tube amp, even fully dimed, and sounds amazing into my big 2x12 94 fender TwinAmp "Evil Twin", even when it's NOT. I think it's because my 94 fender twinamp has a unique cabinet and big old 30 year old 90s fender 12" speakers, which take the harshness off the sound.
The thing is, my 5W amp's high quality 10" speaker has higher fidelity above 5Khz, and my Fender amp simply does NOT do high volume high fidelity above 5Khz. And the overall effect of its Impulse Response is to tame the harsh treble sounds of the fuzz and the guitar and pickups.
What I've noticed is that almost everything I play through the fender 2x12 sounds great to me, precisely because actually its speakers are a bit shit.
However, when I want amazing detailed ethereal delay and reverb with a clean digital sound, the old brute won't do it.
One mans full range hi-fi speaker, is another man's "terrible sounding" guitar cabinet.

Big Muff Pi homie. I use the bass version with my guitar and it has exactly what I need for my guitar (and it was only $65 and it sounds great low and cranked).
      Hope that helps!

I use a tone bender mkii clone into a jumpered plexi clone with everything dialed close to 12 a clock. It's the only way to be 🤘😎🤘

This seems to be all a matter of subjective taste. The very first fuzz-through-clean amp sound he demoed - I really like that!

There are a lot of good fuzz pedals, what he didn't say that I think is important for a fender style amp guy. The velvet fuzz sounds like a cranked fuzz through the a Marshall, even through a fender amp.

My friend is a collector of VW Vanagons and had a car club for them. This was their club shirt. It has a pic of a Vanagon on the back.

I go od, distortion, fuzz then boost. Unless the fuzz has germanium transistors in it, then I find it sounds best when it is either first in the signal chain, or right after my vox V846HW wah. Don't be afraid to experiment! What works for one person won't for another, always trust your ears! :)

even with a clean amp theres no way with that fuzzface dial maxed out would produce this sound, I feel like you additionally rolled back on the volume knob to showcase the 2 extreme ends.

It would be very helpful for me and probably most others if you also demo'd with a humbucker guitar, like a les Paul's, prs, or heaven forbid, ibanez/esp. Lol.

Your Fuzz Face sounds like it has a dead battery. I know they aren't super high gain like some modern pedals, but you should be getting a lot more fuzz than this one has.

I get better tone with my fuzz boxes with my amp's volume half way up! There's LOTS more to know than this guy is telling you. That's why his fuzz tone sounds choked even through a cranked amp.

Hendrix did not play through a cranked amp...look into it. Also, that's your choice for a Fuzz Face? How about NO Dunlop at all? Get a real Fuzz Face:Cornel 1st Fuzz, Sunface, Monsterpiece etc.
