Today we will be answering some questions regarding how we set up our poles for whipping. Remember: SUPPORT LOCAL! Show your local lure makers some love and buy their products! Also measure your fish and release them if needed. The papio caught in today’s episode was released as it was a few inches shy of keep size.

So are you bouncing the sinker as you whip or jig ? or whipping or jigging the whole rig with out touching the bottom ? why not just us leaded jig heads with Grubs on them ? Skips the whole extra swivel sinker rig ? Just curious cause in the States jacks will readily take swimming plugs, jigs and spoons. , no swivels needed or sinkers , that is for bottom fishing with cut or live bait. I really want to try the Hawaiian 🌺 style your using here on our sandy beaches. Even though we have mackerel and bluefish , and barracudas that will cut soft baits of in one hit .
Nik, here! Awesome feedback, David I really appreciate your thoughtful comment! I think using a jig head would be a lot easier as well though I've never actually tried it. To me I feel like I wouldn't get as far in distance as I would if I used a resin ball or egg lead. If you do use the technique i've shown here let us know if it worked for you! We do not claim to be pros by any means so if we can learn from each other that's great! We just want to share what works for us. Oops, sorry forgot to answer your other questions. When whipping I like to do jerking motions against the current, then with the current. I try to mix up the retrieve so that it gets the attention of the fish, then once I feel a hit try to set the hook immediately. I do both side to side and up and down motions when whipping to give the grub more play. You are absolutely right--toothy mid to top water fish absolutely destroy soft baits haha. Can be a pain, for sure but hey, barracuda don't taste too bad either!
I will definitely give jigheads a try! I know of some fishermen here who use them. I think the only real downside to the whipping rig is getting tangled a lot on rough water and getting lead stuck on lava rocks. However when we dive we try to scavenge the tackle people leave behind when they get stuck because you could reuse them but mainly because we have to keep our waters clean and healthy for all who live within. sorry to chime in as a stranger, but just sharing my exp from whipping and getting snagged too many damn times myself and reeling in staring at my goofy looking fake baits, and from someone who is a cheap/poor fisherman.
creates a different kind of action too. More control of weight as well.
for weight control, you have some generic jig heads with a simple lead ball at the end, sure those are easy to control weight, however with the fancier jig heads they tend to be rather light from the few i've seen, and thus limited in the weights you can choose, or if you do want a set of different weights, it will be pricier than having a variety of leads(price aspect)
different kind of action- If you put a lead first then a long hook line the action you create is a more subtle one, there is a delay as the lead drops it has to pull the grub or soft bait down creating a kind of "action", in contrast to the jig itself falling which creates a different kind of action. This can make a difference if you're whipping off a ledge too which is very common in hawaii. if you shake your line you will get a wiggly action from higher up, and thus your jig would look kind of goofy, if however you imagine shaking the egg lead, it will give the egg a goofy action sure, but the lead would be roughly in line with the hook, so it would give a more parallel action to your fake bait. Not too big of a problem if you're not too high up and your rod is long enough to point downwards to the surface.
people here don't use "jig heads" that often that i've seen, but they do indeed use plugs and jigs and lures very often.
the reason for the swivel is so that you your line doesn't twist while giving it action, this can be quite important if you are using a fluorocarbon(line used to hide in water) hook line where kinking is saved like no tomorrow(especially on 12lb or less). Locally for whipping "braid" is used very often. For the same diameter test, you can get significantly more lb test, like 12lb test diameter of mono is like 30 or 40lb test braid, so you can set your drag as high as you want as reels that would accommodate 12lb mono do not have any where near 30lb of drag to bust your line. While durable, braid is also very visible, though if a fish is hungry enough they don't care i suppose, with some exceptions, but a swivel would be used to connect braid to mono/fluoro, though you could attatch line to line i suppose too.
for me if i'm using a slower action the lead acts as sort of a reminder too. If i feel the lead hit a reef i reel a bit faster. it's much easier for an egg lead to bounce off the reef than for a jig head to do so before it gets hooked into it.
also another plus side for me since i'm so lazy sometimes, is if i have the lead whipping method set up, i can put shrimp on it and target wekes(yellow stripe goat fish) here as they are bottom feeders, so a long hook line in calm waters will make the bait sink and lightly dangle an inch or 2 through the water, just enough action i find to tempt wekes.
Fantastic feedback! I definitely know what you mean when you mention hitting reef. Whipping is great when you figure out the right set up and I think it took me a year or two to figure out what worked for me. One of my biggest issues was the line and swivel. Using too heavy a leader line would cause issues tearing the bait when whipping as it would if you use the wrong size hook. Moreover using the wrong size swivel would also cause a tangle when retrieving.
Choosing the length of leader, to me, the longer the better but it also depends on the lead you use and the tide. If it's high tide I go with a longer leader and if low tide the opposite because of the rocks.
Of course this is all in the Hilo area I whip at and it differs based on where you are, just like the color of grub you should use. I like to contrast so if it's rocky I use red curly tails. If its in Kona a lot of locals tell me to use black curly tails.
But at the end of it all you just gotta go out there and try. You never know what will get a hit and you won't get results unless you're out there making it happen. Practice and patience and above all LUCK will get you your fish. As I always say, i'd rather be lucky than skilled hahaha.

I’ll be visiting family next week or two in oahu and wanted to get your input for some fishing suggestions to go fish. I’m bringing my travel rod and baitcaster with 30lb braided line. What kind of lures, size weights, leader and hooks do you recommend? Great video👌🏽
Hey there! I highly suggest using a 1oz egglead with 15-20 Fluro leader. For the hook i would say a solid sized J hook of your choosing ( size 1-2 tarpon hooks are great"). Throw on a red artificial grub from one of our local grub makers (big island baits, Hawaiian angler, J21 lures , Campania) and you should be set!

Hello! Great video!! Can you explain one thing to me....I've been watching a lot of these whipping videos in preparation for a trip out there, and I see a lot of guys use the soft plastics behind casting bubbles as well as the egg sinkers that you show here. It seems to me that using an egg sinker would just cause you to get hung up and snagged in the rocks UNLESS you rip it in fast and don't let it hit bottom. Is it a correct assumption then that you just never let it come in contact with the bottom in a rocky area? The casting bubble seems appealing because you would avoid snags, but I guess it probably might not work well in deeper water. Thanks!
Art Bukowski Aloha! Excellent question! With the casting bubble you mainly are fishing mid to top water. With the egg you get mid to low water. So it really does depend on the kind of fish you are going for. For example, top water strikes using a bubble tend to target papio, lai, aha, or other top water dwellers.
You are correct-you will need to really have good rhythm when using eggs. You also need to look where you cast first to ensure you are not near rocky areas. Lead will get you mid to lower level fish like goat fish (moano), papio (they tend to be all over), and occasionally some snapper.
Using the eggs can be difficult. It took me awhile before getting used to it. These days I barely loose any tackle since I do my best to study the area before casting.

Thanks SO MUCH for the quick reply. I REALLY want to catch an omilu (or at the very least some nicer papio) when I am out there (I will be on Maui) so I am studying and learning as much as I can about techniques. Now I just need to find some good spots out there somehow.
Art Bukowski of course! No problem. Personally i’ve caught papio/omilu on soft baits, shrimp, and oama. It’s a good season to be catching them.
There are a lot of great softbait and hard bait companies here in Hawaii so I encourage you to try them out! Here in Hilo I get a lot of strikes on red and gold colored grubs/minnows. Not sure what works best on Maui.

MurkyFishing I put out a poll on our instagram and no responses yet. My advice would be to find a tackle shop and ask a worker there-i’m in Japan right now and doing the same thing. They were able to map me some places.
Also look for signs along road ways that have blue print which states shoreline access. That’s also a good way to figure out if you can fish in an area or not.

marine6 Howzit! My understanding is the papio needs to be minimum 10”. Great question! And although I have landed 10” papio, I release them safely until there’s one big enough where I feel comfortable taking.
