Bill Russell was a better jumper than Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain. He was among the best jumper in 1956. Anyway, the 48 inches for both Jordan and Chamberlain is bogus. When they were measured officially, they didn't reach those numbers.
Respect to Muggsy. I was 5'3 when I was 11 and Muggsy was an above average player in the NBA at that same height. If he wasn't 5'3 he might have been better than he already was.
but I feel like a lot of his success was due to the fact that he was so small and could weave through defenders. Like, because of his size he was better in some areas but worse in others. So if you were to make him taller he might actually be even worse, or he would just need to change his entire playstyle. but that’s just my opinion
Wilt Chamberlain Archives produced a video in 2013. The author of the video wanted to estimate his incredible vertical. He based his video on his NCAA high jumping record which was 6'6.75. We know exactly Chamberlain's Central Point of Pelvis (CPP) was 45.75". To put his CPP @6'6.75" (or 78.75"), Wilt Chamberlain needed to elevate between 39.6"& 40.35" in order to clear the bar. It is important to note that Wilt Chamberlain always failed to clear 6'7" in competition. According to Wilt Chamberlain Archives, his highest reach with a running start was measured at 12'9" [according to Google Archives], while he was playing for the Philadelphia Warriors at a mere 250 pounds. With a standing reach of 9'6" barefoot, Wilt Chamberlain "only" needed to jump 39.6" in the air in order to reach it... and even if Wilt Chamberlain was able to almost reach 13', his sergeant would be under 45". Like Jordan, 48" isn't realistic or accurate. Jordan was able to jump 46" when measured.
Bill Russell was 3.5” shorter than Wilt but jumped 2.5” higher in the high jump. Wouldn’t that make his vertical jump significantly higher than Wilt’s? Yet no one talks about this.
What isn't being taken into account here is the form it takes to perform the high jump. A great high jumper has to have excellent form to clear the bar, not just great vertical jumping ability.
