  • This video shows off a well-rounded, affordable watch collection that's ready for any occasion and full of value. Some of my criteria for buying watches are:
    SIZE - I want a smaller watch (38mm or less) and am not afraid to wear a watch that’s very small by today’s standards (like 34mm).
    WELL ROUNDED - I don’t want too much duplication or overlap in my collection. Ideally, I’d have one or two casual, sport and dress watches, and nothing more.
    VALUE - When I buy a watch, I want to know that I’m paying for the materials, design, engineering and craftsmanship that went into making it. For the most part, I don’t want to pay for designer logos or marketing hype.
    Finally, I prefer mechanical watches, but I’m not above wearing quartz watches and actually think they’re easier to own. You never have to set them, and they don’t stop ticking if you don’t wear them. I just love the engineering that goes into a mechanical watch and think they’re much more interesting than battery-powered watches.
    Okay, let’s look at the watches, starting with the most casual and working our way to the most dressy. Keep in mind, the total price of this collection is less than $500 - for all 5 watches.

    It's great to see someone building a collection on personal appeal/ purpose instead of the standard brand cache. Great work!
    Going forward I highly recommend you explore the vintage market. It takes a bit of research to understand the value. There are exceptional pieces to be had at a comparable price point to what you have. Zenith and Longines really dominate this category.

    This is a nice collection. Everyone seems to focus on luxury high end watches. You cover a wide spectrum of watches. I am starting a very modest collection and my focus is on the vintage working man's watch. It is about the history to me and my house is entirely retro/vintage. Before I started, I had a mid century Valory Geneve (mechanical) from my grandpa that was just rebuilt and two Boccia quartz watches. Recent additions are a Seiko 5 speed racer, a Casio calculator, a vintage Waltham 17 jewel, a vintage Ricoh automatic, an HTM hand wind, and a Casio A158WEA-9. The Waltham and Ricoh are unused and I was told the HTM is but have not received it. Finding a Ricoh and HTM that are not frankens is laborious. They just ooze retro to a ridiculous level. Just bought a lot of 3 Timex electrics and 2 Timex quartz. Gotta put the brakes on and wait for local auctions that I frequent. This could become a sickness.

    I agree with you wholeheartedly on the Bambino. I too, have approx 6.5 in in wrist diameter, and when I had my Bambino (my first automatic watch I purchased), that thing was HUGE on my small wrist. I have since sold it, but it broke my heart because of how beautiful it was...

    I'm onboard with the minimalist, intentional approach to your watch collection. As a budding enthusiast myself, there's much to learn. And I def. Agree with your final thoughts that it comes down to how you feel about a watch, what it means to you and not so much brand names and all of that. If you like it, that's good enough, doesn't matter what ppl say.

    Great video. I don't really see the problem in wearing watches that may be too big for your wrist. I also have a 6.5in wrist and wear watches well into 40-46mm. They still look great. My advice is wear whatever watch you want with whatever outfit. In fact, most of my watches are over 40mm with my favourite watch at about 43mm.

  • @drewski5150
    @drewski5150 6 років тому +3

    A decent option for a mechanical/automatic dress watch at a budget price is the Junkers Bauhaus. It may have a 40mm face, but it wears much smaller because the lug-to-lug size is even smaller than you Hamilton Khaki.

  • @danfrisco
    @danfrisco 6 років тому

    Hey Brock love the collection. I would suggest vintage Omega if you are looking for a thin mechanical dress watch in the 34-35mm range. There are tons of options and dial configurations for 3-600 out there. I just picked one up with a gorgeous linen dial and date function with a manual movement.

    I think a nice update to your dress watch would be a Citizen eco-drive. Would continue the Citizen legacy in your collection, provide some value for tech with the Eco-Drive(instead of just quartz), well under $100 and with a variety of sizes to match your requirement.

    I love how you kept your dad's watch. Along those lines Seiko and Citizen both have a modern watch new similar to the Cartier Tank. Check them out. I don't remember the Ref. numbers.
    As for my collection I am budding watch enthusiast myself. Currently I have a very cheap (and poor quality) field watch I want to upgrade once it dies. On it's way I have a Vistok Amphian, and I am seriously considering the Timex Marlin "remix" so to speak. Another sub $200 Dress watch for small wrists. I am a 6 3/4 to 7" but prefer vintage sizes myself.

    If you do want an auto dress watch, I would look at the vintage market. For example, you can snag a vintage omega seamaster from the 60s for a very good price. I recently bought an omega from the 70's with original band and buckle for just a shade over $200. It's square, funky, and minimalist. It sits a bit tall for some folks, but I love the hell out of the watch and it keep excellent time.

    I believe the K2 in SKX013 means that it comes on a bracelet. The K1 would be the version with the rubber strap.
    If you want a small automatic dress watch you should look for a used one. I bought a 35mm Junghans at a flea market for 30€ and it is awesome :) Are you planning on adding a mechanical chronograph down the line? My next watch will probably be a Seagull 1963 38mm. You get a really great movement for that price

    No MVMT or DW? You got a new sub. So many fashion channels promoting garbage its awful. I also have skx013 and because of its size I truly think it can be one watch collection. On a bracelet it call also pass as dressy piece. Perfect watch.

    • @BrockMcGoff
      @BrockMcGoff  6 років тому +3

      I wore "fashion watches" when I was first getting into watches, but my preferences have definitely evolved. The thing is, it's so hard for people to figure out which brands are good/bad. For example, my aunt was about to buy a Skagen or DW watch for her son (my cousin) as his first watch. I steered her toward Brathwait/Citizen instead, but on the surface they look like the same thing (especially Skagen vs. Brathwait). There's no way to tell the difference unless you have a basic understanding of the components, history, etc.
      But yeah man, the 013 is an amazing piece. Definitely the one I would keep out of the collection, if I had to choose.

      I have two reservations about the Orient Bambino: the case diameter...the smallest one being 40.5mm, and the odd choice of 21mm band width.

      I wouldn't be surprised if they made a smaller version sometime in the next year. Maybe just wishful thinking...

      Nice choice! I like the black dial version too (033 I think).

    May I ask which strap is that on the Hamilton ? looks like a 2 piece perlon. Is it comfy?.
    I also agree with the size. I have a small wrist, so i have to keep doing research in newer models that fit the criteria. Another thing to pay attention is the lug to lug distance and the shape they have, it gives a pretty good idea how the watch will settle around the wrist.

      +Juan Jose Quinteros Rivas yup, it’s a perlon (link in description). Needs a little more breaking in, but I love how thin it is.

    Ever thought about a vintage timex for a dress watch? Mine is 34mm and hand winding.

    Brock - We are NOT discussing here regarding dress watches is it, because of your other video I liked the 'The 5th' dress watch and will consider to add it to my list and whenever you have time please analyze DW dress watches and let us know your opinion.
    Thanks for your videos.

    Do you try watches on in person or order them and hope for the best? I would like to see how the SKX 013 looks on my wrist before buying.

      I usually just do a lot of research. Find a UA-camr with similar sized wrists, and you can get a pretty good idea for how it will look. Also, many places have friendly return policies.

    I'm feeling all of these watches and I want to go the minimalist route as well.
    I don't want to become a watch guy. Just want a few nice ones that compliment my wardobe.

    For a dress watch I say get a vintage longines or omega which can be had for $350 to $500 Canadian

    If you have a medium to small wrist then you should definitely pick up the SARB033 or 035. It is 38mm and it looks great when you're dressed up or casually dressed. It is probably the best watch you can find under 500. If you were just going to own one watch and didn't want to spend Rolex money then the Seiko Sarb is your best bet.
