Single coils. There are several physical aspects of pickups that effect tone. Height and width, for example. Wide flat Jazzmaster pickups produce more bass than a strat pickup with the same number of winds.
Putting tape around the magnets before winding will lower some high frequencies because the highest frequencies come from the coil wire closest to the magnets. Conversely, wrapping the coil with tight fitting tape after winding will push more of the coil winding closer to the magnets and boost the high frequencies.

And if you all want to learn more make sure you go watch Chris’s pickup winding playlist on his channel. You get way more details and it’s a great place to start.
Other recommendation is to keep a journal of all the numbers for the pickups you make and either a video of the sound, or just your impression of the sound.

Fascinating topic! Can't believe how we overpay. Thanks!

For people who build one or a couple instruments it might not be the best choice to build a winder to make a pickup. But for a builder like you it's not just the curiosity involved in doing it but I believe it's more profitable on the overall price of the guitar. Love the amount of information that you share, you're awesome!

Great video, lots of info set for people with intentions on owning very expensive tools , pre set numbers for matches to look for, for those learning how to match pre made pickups would be what I’m looking for personally, example if you want a nice warm neck sound like the lights from journey, but not the bright fender bridge sounds and fighting for sustain, something like a p-90 noiseless hot pickup, lol, or what guitar would you look for stock wise to base a starter sound with

Great vid as always I learn a lot from you good sir
I’ve tried getting into pickup winding and have been successful with single coils/p90s . We’re I got stuck is winding sets that include humbuckers like hss or hsh I seem to always get the wind direction wrong and the magnet polarity wrong they all work great on their own but in the middle positions they have that out of phase weak signal tone .
I’ve never watched a vid on UA-cam were the host explains winding pickups as sets seems to get glossed over . I had a break from it as it just got me confused 🫤. Having always bought my pickups I never really gave it a second thought but I’ve day I’ll wind the perfect hss set 😂
Any help would be fantastic . Sorry fir my grammar / punctuation etc never was any good at that sorta thing 😂

A pickup has two properties. 1) direction of the magnetic polarity. 2) coil winding direction. For the pickups to be in phase, both properties in each pickup need to be the same or opposite. For example, to be in phase, a bridge pickup and a neck pickup must have both properties the same, or one of the pickup's properties must be opposite to the other. If both pickups have the same properties, hum cannot be canceled. Hum can only be canceled when the properties of one pickup are opposite the other pickup. If both pickups were wound in the same direction but one is north up and the other is south up, they will be out of phase and not hum canceling. With humbuckers, you can wind the bobbins in the same direction and have north up in one bobbin and south up in the other bobbin and still get hum canceling even though the winding direction was the same. How? By reversing the leads in one bobbin. In one bobbin, you would have the start of the coil be the start and the finish would be the finish. In the other bobbin, the start would be wired as the finish, and the finish would be wired as the start. This will effectively reverse the coil direction in that bobbin. You need to map your pickups to find out the winding direction and polarity of each bobbin to figure out where the problem is. Pay very close attention to how the humbucker bobbins are wired together. I suspect that's where your problem lies.

@@HighlineGuitars Thankyou fir your reply very much appreciated
I will read a few times to let it sink in and screen shot to reference when I wind neck
Yes I think you are spot on I definitely got confused connecting the coils together and to the lead wire . I’ll definitely get there and learn a ton on the way . Sometimes the best way to learn is do it wrong a few times then you know why you did it right 😁 it’s all good fun and many thanks 🙏

HIGHLINE, Do you measure the gauss and what compositions measurements of the each pole piece? because the steel/iron content of each pole piece will increase or decrease the Alnico magnetic. So what do you use to measure the iron content of the pole pieces?

@@HighlineGuitars if the supplier didn't give you that info, what would you use to measure the steel/iron content of each pole piece? because vintage guitars aren't going to give you this information so you would have to measure the steel/iron content of vintage pole pieces so what can you use to measure the steel/iron content?
