As a survivor of the Texas winter storm (4 days no electricity, 2 days no water in 25 degree weather) I started watching prepping videos. I never wanted to feel so unprepared in case of disaster. Watching these videos taught me that you should have a backup to your backup. We have portable solar panels and solar generators, gas generator with extra gas. Plenty of Butane gas with 2 Coleman stoves. Also electric pan and rice cooker in case we run out of butane and need to use the solar generator. Propane heater and electric heater (350 watts on low), small electric personal heaters (150 watts on low), heating pad (38 watts on high). 5000BTU AC window unit (380 watts on low). We finally feel comfortable for a summer outage (hurricanes) or a winter outage. Thank you Chris for all the suggestions and your calm demeanor is communicating all this info to me. 🙂

I've lived in a third world country where you have electricity on one day and the next you don't. Pretty much rolling blackouts for days.. And at first, it's very jarring if one isn't used to this way of living. I do tell my kids tho that I won't suffer bcuz I know what it's like to be without electricity. Same with water, all rationed. Americans haven't the slightest idea exactly how privileged they are and have been.
We're not looking forward to finding out either...

In South Africa we have blackouts for 10 to 12 hours per day. Sometimes no power for 3 days. We've had blackouts since 2006 but never as frequent as they have been since last year. I don't believe there is an energy shortage. This is greed and corruption all the way amongst governments and shadow governments
Just curious, can you leave for the USA if you want to? Maybe Florida or Texas, where there's some hope?

When I lived in the Phoenix metro area, I sought out an old house. I found one in the oldest neighborhood in one of the main suburbs. It was built to catch any natural breezes & my walls were thick enough to shield against extreme high & low temperatures. Most of the houses built from the 50s onward in that area were designed to solely depend on air conditioning & heating to keep them livable.
That area is also going to be hit super hard during the upcoming crisis because many people there are simply not used to the heat. They go from an air conditioned car to an air conditioned building & back again without much exposure to slowly allow their bodies to adjust to the heat during the summer months. 🙁 It’s not much different from colder areas where people always have their heaters on blast. 🥶❄️

Actually, if the power goes out. There is absolutely no place to get cool. No basements, nothing else. I was actually in a underground parking garage in Oct 22. It was unbelievable hot, and really bad exhaust fumes. I felt bad for the attendant, working. There's nothing to run. To. Absolutely nothing.
@Hope Fliers yuppers. Now the news says a small city outside of Scottsdale, is being cut off municipal H20. Worse, they reelected Send. Mark Kelly,& he voted for ** Az forfeit***2023 H20 rights to California. The allotment is 21% of the Colorado river. PHX. Gets the rest H20 from eastern state resources/resivior. Basically ppl. Are dumb, and don't understand the voting process. They be wondering, why the H20 & electricity ran out.🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄😐 Think we have over 8 million in the state now.

@@Favorite-catNip My family lived for 2 years there without heat or air conditioning when our unit quit working & we couldn’t afford repairs. It was tough, but doable with fans & cool showers twice a day. I’m pretty sure the only reason we were okay is because we were used to it & the house was well-built.
The lack of basements was really weird to me when I first moved there for sure.
Parking garages are especially awful because of all the cement & asphalt. 🥵 When you get outside the major metro areas it’s a lot cooler, especially at night. I’d love to become a snowbird because I miss the Sonoran desert, but I’m glad I’m out of the heat.

Check out the great simplification podcast. One of the issues with crude is that is not all the same as far as grades and chemical makeup, which is why other countries need our oil and we also need oil from other countries.

There isn't a energy shortage. There is a political game being played in the world wide governments.
None of the political or business elites plan to go without anything....
There is an energy shortage AND there are games being played.
Problem is, we don't have a shortage of oil, etc., US exports to other countries then buys majority of our supply from other countries.
How scary is this??!!! I am to the point of never listening to any politician. What else are they telling us that’s not true? I am going to take care of my family and people that I love the best I can. Good luck to us all!

The climate is changing.... but we are not the be all end all when it comes to the equation......
There's many natural processes at work here..... the magnetic poles are shifting and have accelerated over the last 100 years.... this has decreased the strength of the magnetosphere allowing the energy from solar coronal mass ejections to have a greater impact on our atmosphere.... this in turn has helped change the trajectories of the jet streams, upsetting our "normal" weather patterns.....
There is also the chandler wobble which effects the geographical north and south axis.... the earth wobbles in precession every 26,000 years.....
Earths rotation is speeding up, days are becoming shorter.....
The sun micro novas and blasts off it's coronal shell....
There's also the milankovitch cycle..... this changes earths cyclical precession around the sun from a circular shape into a oval shape. This creates tidal heaving in earths core and continental plates, leading to more earthquakes and volcanic activity.....
None of the above we can do much about and are all natural processes, we aren't causing these things to happen yet they will ultimately play the biggest roll on our climate and earth... that's why we're not told about it in the news daily, they can't sell us a solution to these problems...... notice how many are buying bunkers though, notice how many are preparing for serious issues.....
We do however need to change our behaviour, we can do more to stop poisoning our environment and the air we breath, this is our home, let's stop poisoning the well before we can't anymore, destroying our environment for profit is madness.

@@JT-cf5ol I usually don’t listen to the government. Was just making a point. I have read and still read history, probably more than most. Which is why I know it’s scary out there and we are in trouble.
Honestly, transitioning to living full time in an RV as a family of four has really shown me how fast you can go through resources. Let’s use water for example, when we first moved into the RV, I still was using the kitchen sink the way I was as in a house. But just a few times using it, the grey tank is full. That’s 45 gallons already! We’ve now since learned to use very little water and conserve to where that same grey tank takes us a week until we have to empty it. We can all learn to be more conservative with our resources. Sometimes it just takes a shift in our perspective and reality of how much we actually use.
As someone who has been a career oil and gas worker I had solar installed on my home this year. Some people see it as hypocritical but it has helped me lower my overall energy costs.
Did the government stipends make it more economical? Last time I looked into it, solar had a pay off of 20-30 years.
I bought a solar lamp made to illuminate my American flag at night...it hasn't worked for days since its been cloudy in VA! I'd hate to have to rely on solar for anything else!!!!
@@rsunny3448 If you watch any of these videos you'll notice a common theme. "Don't put all your eggs in one basket". Solar isn't perfect nor is our electrical grid. Both are vulnerable.

This letter is being sent to our Priority Service Register customers to provide information and advice following the publication of the Electricity System Operator, National Grid ESO's, Winter Outlook, which raised the remote prospect of planned emergency power cuts to manage potentially reduced energy supplies from Europe this winter. National Grid ESO is the electricity system operator for Great Britain and are responsible for the management of the GB electricity grid, ensuring there is enough electricity to be distributed across the country.
As one of the six Distribution Network Operators (DOs) in Great Britain, it is our role to operate under instruction from National Grid ESO to conduct emergency disconnections - if they are required. I would like to take this opportunity to reassure you that the industry has robust plans in place and stress these options would be taken as a last resort, when all other measures to balance electricity supply and demand have been exhausted.
You may have seen recent media coverage on this issue, and we fully appreciate that this may be concerning for you.
While these planned outages remain an unlikely scenario, we want to ensure that our customers, particularly those on our Priority Service Register, are prepared and can minimise the disruption they may experience.

I recently had a power outage where I am in Scotland, and they hinted similar stuff.
I am used to dealing with customer service so I was possibly a tiny bit "hyperbolic" about my circumstances (in order to accelerate their response), but they were very quick to offer me the option to register as someone with medical conditions that would prioritise my access to energy and prioritise repairs to the power supply. Tempting as it was, I decided not to, because I was not prepared to "register" health issues with no guarantee this information would not be spread far and wide with other agencies and databases, and I didn't want a little mild "exaggeration" to bite me in the ass in a couple of years time when applying for something like insurance.
On one hand I was actually impressed that the UK is effectively moving to a war footing on energy BEFORE it needs to.
On the other hand its slightly disturbing that they have to.
Clearly they are preparing for the worst.
It is however worth noting that last year a storm knocked out power in a sizeable region in the North of England. The tight-ass energy companies had no response. They were running on the operation on a shoestring, and as a result some communities were left without power for over THREE WEEKS when the temperatures were hovering around freezing. Changes came into effect after this because I think the government felt slightly pissed that they had to initiate emergency responses for something that was basically a corporate failure.
I wonder how many of those letters went right into the bin, unread.
Long way of saying, yes, along with everyone else, if we have to cut power, you too will be fucked!
I am in the UK as well. When ever the national grid stresses that planned or unplanned blackouts are a "remote risk" , I get a strong feeling that they are playing things down as not to panic people. Lets face it - people lose their tempers if they can't get 4G on their phones. I really hope I am wrong - if we get to April and the lights have stayed on, I will be happy to be wrong.

My biggest tip when consulting with off grid prospects: practice off grid weekends to work through all details. Turn off the main breaker on Friday afternoon and see if you can make it to Sunday afternoon. Close the gaps that show up. Same procedure for water, food and internet/entertainment. Flexibility, creativity & resiliency is the key to success.
Between nature, planned outages & cyber warfare, we all must be on the ready. We know it’s coming, not if it comes. Have a contingency plan, which will offer some peace of mind.

I live in an area where solar just isn't a good option as we get more rain than sun. Our electricity is from hydro
I would focus on water, food, and energy if nothing else. While one could live without electricity, it's not reasonable to think that such a transition could be easily made during a crisis. You have to be aware that you wouldn't be the only one. Therefore, alternatives that normally would have been viable options will evaporate quickly because everyone will be needing the same resources.
I consider refrigeration to be necessary for transition. Surprisingly, refrigeration is not a huge power user.
@@Scaliad Especially for those that require refrigeration for medication. Yes I agree. Refrigeration can have a very low power consumption.
@@Scaliad How can we keep refridgeration going? I dont take meds, but I often wonder about the need for ice for headaches and sore body parts.
Electricity is really the least impactful part of global energy consumption. It is food production and distribution that will probably hurt the worse.
@@stevebreedlove9760 No doubt..., but electricity is the hardest of all to provide for yourself, and production really can't be sustained indefinitely because it depends on tech; hence, my speaking of transition. Where electric water pumping needs are sporatic and can be solar direct as solar is available with water storage, refrigeration requires power storage for continous operation during low insolation; more complicated less sustainable.
Staying in the PNW for water access; and then building solar preps for energy. Wood stove as well. I'm glad you mentioned R value because ALL of the states in the USA aren't adequate. I overbuilt my recent renovation to closer to R50 value in a temperate climate zone. When I eventually build a new construction going to make sure all the walls are insulated at least to R50. Really important to plan ahead when doing that and understanding how woefully inadequate our current codes are.
We have known how to build passive solar zero energy residential homes since the 1970s. It’s not rocket science either, high R values, attention to details for tight seals, and much efficient glazing on the south side. Why haven’t we done it?
@@scooterp7009 Imo it is cause we have allowed builders to set code; and corporations to set laws. Whereas, we should be having independent studies doing those things of experts. I don't plan to do passive since the cost is too high for me, but definitely going to do solar + high R value; and multi-paned windows etc.
When I flip my light switch, I expect it to turn on. I really don't care how my power is created. We need both renewable, fossil, nuclear,geothermal, hamsters on a wheel, etc. It will take all forms of generation to meet our needs. I have always taken for granted that I have a reliable source of electricity. I always thought rolling blackouts were a West Coast problem but its not. On Christmas during the polar vortex, my electric provider had to have rolling blackouts due to TVA not having enough power to meat the need. Fortunately, they were short and only lasted for the one day. That was definitely a wake up call.
Same happened here in Southern KY on Christmas Eve (we're part of TVA also). Luckily the house never even dropped a degree but we were ready with fireplace/generator if needed. And I agree with you re having as many sources of electricity generation as we can.
My family in Texas a big wake up call to the grid in 2021. Hopefully everyone starts taking these issues seriously but who knows, we’ve allowed everything to get politicized in culture wars, solutions are overlooked

I have been using more passive solar heat, I now get 12 hours per day of passive solar warmth. Add in a sturdy mylar blanket under my bedding, I am toasty warm at night. Not like central heat and air, but not freezing to death either. Even so, I shut down the cold north half this winter, making it easier for passive solar to warm the south half. In summer I shut down the hot south half. I am accumulating 40% shade cloths for next summer.
I am finishing out a 120 sf partially underground shed for my future glamping on the most severe days, cold or hot.
Best to start preparing for reality to come.

AHHH SHITS GONNA HIT THE FAN
A great book to read is "Keeping Warm in Hard Times" written for surviving power outages in cold weather, and in hot weather as well. Plus how to reduce heating and cooling costs.
In California, we have PSPS. It stands for public safety power shut-offs. There is a warning we would get on our phones if this were to be implemented, and we were to be affected. Basically, power would be shut off along a strand of service that originates in an area, usually mountain, that may put undue stress on the system. For instance, high winds in the mountainous area where there is a current fire watch situation. And whoever is "downstream" from that station. Ee also have rolling blackouts, brown outs, complete blackouts, and electric outages due to weather or transmission damages. So yes, it's a very fragile system. Because my immediate area is sensitive to wildfire and has been impacted in the past, PGE is working on bringing our transmission lines underground. Yay. We've used our generator for power 4 times this year, so far.

The energy crises is happening due to over regulation. Every time the government hugely regulates something, it loses the ability to adapt and evolve. This strangles the industry long term and causes significant problems
Had solar for our freezer and a backup stove but, a lightning strike fried our system 😱
Whats the cost to replace that?

its getting real bad with gas here in colorado.
our biggest gas distributor all but fully shutdown where they only load very minimium amout of fuel on the tankers and the store i manage we have gone up $1.20 in less than a month in our price not including the price of everything in our store has gone up 50%-150% in the past 3months.
Hi from WheatRidge. Gas at my regular station from $2.89 two weeks ago to $3.69 few days ago. Suncor down is gonna F us good as DIA got most of their fuel from them. I wish I had a huge gas tank.

3 weeks ago it was 2.89 and i just brought the price up to 4.09 today.
suncor isnt down but our fuelers are telling us that they are only limited in getting 500gallons from them and if thats diesel we sell that with 3 truckers alone.

Weather "extremes" existed when many older homes were built but there was not the technology to adequately insulate them. Fancy pink high-R-value insulation simply didn't exist when Grandad built his home from the kit he ordered from the Sears catalog. But he could have told you about some crazy weather years back in the day.
One of the greatest systemic failures in the USA is the concentration of population in large cities. It was done to provide labor for industry, but resulted in concentrations of population that are toxic to the environment. Populations spread out into the (now-abandoned) small towns would help solve many of the issues we currently deal with, especially violence, crime, mental illness, and resource management.
I’m a former logger and one of the renewable resources is wood,solar,gas and coal are not renewable sources as they rely heavily on petroleum resources to produce or harvest the materials required to convert the energy!
Oil and gas did not come from fossils, oil is a mineral. Stop calling them fossil fuels.
Oil and gas were formed over millions of years from prehistoric organisms. Call it whatever you want.

It's passed time to get off the grid and be self-reliant. Do not depend on THEM to provide for you cuz even if they CAN, YOU may not be able to afford the price they're asking for the services they provide.

For the record, Phoenix as in the city is 1.8 million, but it’s all interconnected much like Los Angles. So if you add the entire metro area with all Phoenix villages and surrounding smaller cities, it’s near 6 million.

I'm for UBE - universal basic energy - with individual power in a distributed network vice our largely centralized method so we won't have to rush to redo our failing, antiquated grid under duress. I just got heat pumps and mini splits, but they use way more power to run heating my house than my solar panels create in the winter. Time to expand and get more panels with batteries. Going for energy independence.
Back in the day, around 2004, the adage was "every dollar you spend on efficiency saves 3 dollars on a solar energy system. Of course, solar panels were $7 dollars a watt back then.
There was a time none of this existed,it’s not needed to live,we’ve become such a spoiled society that we deserve this,only the strong survive.
BP wants everyone to think that oil is finite and we are running out, how else could they justify raising the prices constantly?!? How many billions in profit have they made just last year?
Do you believe fossil fuels are in infinite supply in this earth? Do you believe there is an infinite supply of the metals and other materials we need for battery production and other modern technology? Infinite fresh water supplies for a rising population?
We live in a finite world. We can't base our society on ever-increasing consumption and growth.

I have gotten solar powered things for my preps cause I’ve been through some natural disasters that have knocked out the power for days growing up as always thank you kris for the information you calmly provide us
this is what happens when you allow people that have no idea how to run things.. We choose to allow people with drummed up fake degrees on paper to run our way of life. instead of that old guy that has been turning wrenches for decades.. WE have done this to our self. and now we reap what we have sewn.
The answer? Reduce need for the infrastructure’s discussed in this video.

If so, it is much harder to transition to “off grid.”
Make your dependency footprint smaller!
If feasible…Buy a smaller SHTF dwelling . Rv , trailer, pop up, small cabin, converted outbuilding…. To stay in, until the energy crisis eases up.
Much easier to heat /cool a small dwelling. Than a 2,000 sq ft or larger home.

So how is it that they stop drilling for oil in one location for years because it's dry and when they go back after some years the well is full again?
Just remember kids, we’ll be the LAST ones told if/when a real disaster is on its way. The government will do its best to avoid panic until the very last minute. Fortunately we follow info and channels like Kris’s. We are not to norm.
Keeping All your Eggs in One Basket isn't always a good plan. Energy variety with the assumption that some form of energy may some day be in short supply or non existent is an idea needing more embracing. Thank you for pointing this out!

There's plenty of oil. Just too many restrictions
I'm ready for up to one year or more of disaster or collapse. My Gen X'er daughter and I discussed this mess today. Even though we disagree on the cause, we totally agree on the plan and solutions to survive.

Forger all this bs. 1st and most important need is protection. It's city prepper so think this. If 1 person on your street has power and all other concerns covered that are spoken of here and the rest don't how long do you think you will be alone before visitors. Unless in rural setting most these are useless to your long term existence.
While I'm prepping like you, city prepping makes sense if it doesn't get too bad. Staying on and working to keep normal city systems running lessens the impact of SHTF situations but I'd be still prepared to bug out if I lived in a city.
The event probably won't be a disaster movie scene with the highways blocked, as most people will be out of fuel by then and be in a psoition where they can't leave as they have nowhere to go. Having extra fuel for a vehicle may mean you can drive on relatively open and clear highways, as long as you have a destination.

I been wanting a solar generator for my fridge, freezer chest and maybe plugging in small appliances if needed ( I don't care if it powers whole house).....but sadly my husband is anti solar 😔

Buy one any way! Half of the house money is yours to spent as you see fit. Your husband must be a lib? he wants everyone to suffer because of him? I would buy that generator, no matter what he said. He does not have to enjoy the power from the generator. Serve him some hot beer, not warm, hot! cold food, and turn up the temp in the house while he is trying to sleep!
Look at what you absolutely need to survive. Everything else is just a luxury that you can eliminate.
REMEMBER THE MOVIE "The Road Warrior" ? In it, a nuclear war erupts over the dwindling supply of PETROLEUM. Back in the 1980's, various "think tanks" all confirmed that global oil reserves would be expended by the mid-21st Century (year 2050). Hence, nations are trying to LOCK IN sources of oil before other nations scarf them up. This is the REAL reason behind the push for ELECTRIC vehicles - NOT "saving the environment", since polluting power plants will still need to produce electricity for them !

The ony way solar is practical is if you install it yourself, the 75% plus labor charge (20 to 30k) makes it impractical.
And how much energy and what is all that stuff made off.

Do you guys realize in many states if your solar system is connected to the grid and it goes down your solar power is cut off. It has absolutely no backup capability.
Also I am amazed that the solar companies have managed to sell solar where the sun doesn't shine. In the Sun Belt you can get a whole house off the grid system for about 16k. In Minnesota the system will cost twice that because the pannel array and storage must larger because of few sunny days plus how many of sun days the pannel are covered with snow.
In my case , I live in the sunbelt but I will have to cut down the many trees which shade my house . This would cause my summer usage to skyrocket. Not worth it.

The part that is hard for me to understand is, they say that our power grid is stretched to the limit, then they ask us to buy electric cars to plug into that already overloaded power grid.........seems really stupid to me. And ,in florida you can't go off grid. it'snot against the law to unhook from the grid but, if you do they condemn your house. Why? Because Florida Power an Light wants it that way. And they have our state government in shier pocket. For the people? Don't think so. Crooked state government.......and no one is talking about it.

Last year, on Dec. 5th, there was a breakthrough in nuclear fusion. For the first time ever, scientists and technologists were able to get more power out of a unit of energy than they put into it.
Is our electrical grid vulnerable? Yes, it is. The thing that nobody really talks about is that crisis equals growth. Does nuclear fusion still have a long way to go, since Dec. 5th? Sure it does. However, as time goes on, things will change hopefully for the better! We'll see.
This is an outstanding rundown Kris, highlighting the lack of understanding for the total problem by most of us. Hopefully the balance of options can provide the long-term solution for our continued existence in some semblance of comfort. Highly recommend Fossil Future as a good book to read on the energy subject. We should all be working toward having our home be independent from a grid and able to operate on its own. On the individual home level, sources like solar and wind can work. On a societal level, they are a laughable waste of money and time. Nuclear and hydro are probably the best for grid power. Fossil fuels for machine power.
*Among the throng of paranoid or anxiety laden voices among prepper personalities, I know that someday when Kris's (CityPrepping) calm, reasonable tone finally changes to panic it is then that I will know events have moved from bad to truly catastrophic. While the pandemic, supply chain break down, economic down turn, the war, etc has been really bad, it has not qualified as "catastrophic" historically speaking & I pray, I hope that things never do.*
When you say “fossil fuels” which fossils are you asserting these fuels come from? It’s not from fossils. It’s “abiotic oil” and is renewable. Look up stories about how people pumped their wells dry and in 2 years later the earth refilled them.
The old idea was to get as much from others before you exploit your own. No form of energy works everywhere and there is a tendency not to look beyond the superficial for what any form of energy consists of. How many people realize solar is not just light but also solar radiation?

You only scratched the surface in discussing different qualities of fossil fuels and how many if the most desired types of natural gas, for example, are getting far more scarce than the overall global supply of natural gas. You could easily turn this into a series. Nate Hagens recently had a guest that discussed this concept. I think you could distill that down for a wider audience.
Solution is easy. Governments stay out of it and let the free market work. That is how you fix the energy crisis. No subsidies, allow drilling and mining and there is no more energy crises.
A century would not get my grandbabies to death! On some of my family history!! So let's ignore climate and all bs and focus on God!
The only thing that will go in my life if the grid fails is,, internet , toilet flushing , running tap water , not a issue , i live off 12 volts now , a river near by , internet i can live without ,i can dig a hole for the toilet, my fridge is running off deep cycle battery's and inverter from 12 volts and my lights,, i never lack power . Simple setup i made my self . keeping warm is a diesel heater , i could go wood if needed , but not yet . peace xx

Anyone out there canning should clean empty jars and refill with water. No use leaving them empty when I can have extra drinking water when there is no power to my well.
If things stop working what is the best way to handle our waste and protect our homes from municipal sewage backups? That would be so awesome if we found a way to use our poop for energy. Takes care of 2 problems at once. Toto the Japanese bathroom fixture company did a promotional poop powered bicycle around 10 years ago (not in production). There must be some kind of untapped power in our poop.

Bio-digestion to produce bio-methane gas.
Essentially, organic material is placed into a sealed airtight container.
Bacteria break down the material to extract the oxygen, excreting methane gas, which can be used to power heaters and cookers.
I have seen videos on YT on the subject, though it's not something I have implemented myself...yet

Your original premise of diversifying your skills is still relevant. Communities also need to diversify their energy sources and not rely on one single source. Recently all the tech companies have been laying off 1000's of their workers whose skills are probably limited. Pundits have already stated that many of them will have problems finding other work. But your approach would benefit those individuals to live and maybe adjust their realities.

I know one thing as fact. When everything is falling apart it will be business as usual for us poor folks.
