      @Robert Lee, Countertenor It's not always narcissism although I can understand where you're coming from - I know for example that Richter would sometimes sit at the piano and not start playing until he counted to 30 in his head.

    The strength and total command of his playing is astonishing. He even gets better with age...if that's possible. His late 70's videos prompted visions of what the great Liszt might have looked like at that age. Wow.

      @musiclassic1 Pletnev prefers to put his mannerisms into the music, rather than bounce around like so many do, something that is and was done by other "robotic" musicians such as Heifetz, Horowitz, and (to a degree) Rubinstein.

      @@TomBarrister He doesn't seem to me to be a very mannered man on the inside either then, considering he sounds nothing like Heifets, Horowitz and Rubinstein. Few concert artists play this piece as written. All have their own embellishments, and most use some variation of the four chord ending. Horowitz got the idea from Chopin's Ballade No. 3 (Opus 47), which uses the same ending, except that in the Ballade, the second chord (F minor) is played on the dominant note (C), and Horowitz's ending plays it on the tonic note (F). Pletnev designed his own descending run leading to the four chords, using mainly the white keys.

    Extremely well played, with a delightful dry humor. Some comments say this is better than Horowitz. I think Pletnev himself, who knew Horowitz well, would be the first to disagree. As the great Lazar Berman once said, "“To compare me or any other pianist with Horowitz is a sacrilege, a profanity, like spitting on a saint in church.”

    • @kunfupapa8162
      @kunfupapa8162 4 роки тому +3

      I think you are absolutely right ! Pletnev has the good taste not to imitate Horowitz and yet he manages to deliver a rendition of this etude that is close in spirit to Horowitz's. Close technically but not better in my opinion because Horowitz made music sound even more genuine, sparkling, vivid, smartly poetic, intrinsically right and fair... I think young Pletnev was very close to that when he played his sleeping beauty transcription in Moscow.
