Not a bee keeper, but I found this incredibly interesting. My six year old son has a new obsession with honey lately... and the bees added in Minecraft, plus the recent bee pandemic we're seeing here in Europe has him very interested in all of this. I showed him some bee videos yesterday, how the hives work and how honey is made. That is how this got recommended to me. He hasn't seen this video yet, but I'll be sure to show it to him because I found this one to be the most straight forward. Plus I love now open and free you are with bees. there is a good chance that was a marker he put on her. A lot of queens can really only be found through the large abdomen. If you google queen bee and look at the images, you'll see some with marker and others without.
The colour system involves marking the queens a colour that corresponds with the year in which they are mated. This is as follows: - Years that end in 1 or 6 get a white dot - Years that end in 2 or 7 get a yellow dot - Years that end in 3 or 8 get a red dot - Years that end in 4 or 9 get a green dot - Years that end in 5 or 0 get a blue dot

No the thorax isnt shiny. The bee hive keepers mark the queen with marker as the queen in the video is marked with blue colour. It makes easier to find the queens in the future.
why would you re-queen a colony? Couldn't the queen just keep going on being queen? I am so curious. When you re-queen, do you kill the existing queen?
Apparently, a good reason you'd requeen a colony is if the current colony that exists doesn't act accordingly. Sometimes the workers tend to attack/go on the offensive when they have certain queens. Not much of an expert. From what I've seen from these videos, a lot of the colony's actions are determined by the queen. Change the queen and hopefully the colony will settle down and focus more on production and less on attacking innocent bees and bystanders.
We requeen for a few reasons. Old queens won't last much longer so we replace them before the hive dies. Bees can replace their own queens but it doesn't always work and at certain times of year is impossible. We also re queen if we don't find the bees to our liking. It's a way of improving the genetics.
That was cool! You arw the only person I saw not scared and not being stung by the bees. Did you apply any chemical ointment on your body? Because you were without any gear.

Hi Karla
Thanks for your interest. It sounds like you'd really like to learn more about bees. I'd suggest you go to a library and take out a book about bees and beekeeping. Our videos touch on many beekeeping topics but can't explain all the biology.
So if u were to requeen would you just pinch her and immediately put new queen in her cage into hive to be released by workers in a few days? Or do you let hive sit queenless for 3 days?
Hi Rabbit
The ideal is about 24 hours queenless before introducing a new queen.
I love bees, the street I grew up in, the council planted flowering bushes everywhere there were bumble bees, honey bees and wasps all over them, we used to go out with jars and catch the biggest ones for inspection lol, bumble bees are like little furry bears, they were my favourite.
Hi JP
My favourite are the very small bumble bees produced early in the spring. You were brave to catch the bees! Nice to hear how much you appreciate them.
Huge bumblebees scare me when they fly towards me :X
I watch a lot of these videos and am finding these to be very very good. What I would like to know is can I purchase some of your queens? I live in Massachusetts
HiTerry
Great to hear you find our videos helpful. We sell some queens but don't export. We can sell to US customers that are able to pick them up here but otherwise recommend our Buckfast collaborators Munro Honey www.munrohoney.com/ and Ferguson Apiaries fergusonapiaries.on.ca/.
thank you very much. very informative, and great techniques. I'm so new at bee keeping, and learning more each day.
Our pleasure Brad. You are very welcome. Have fun learning about bees!

You are right Rick. Finding queens does require patience. Try using the tips in the video and keep your focus (my biggest challenge). Thanks Rick.
I have never been stung by a bee before.
Nice watch my man! What model is that?
Hi Sean
Thanks! Its a Citizen Promaster Automatic NY0040- 09E. I like having the crown away from my wrist.
nice1..Y bees are friendly with you?? How did you manage it?
Bees are friendlier than you might think. We do breed for gentle behaviour and a nice sunny day helps.
Pretty cool! Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
Our pleasure!
thanks a lot for all this helpful information.
You are very welcome Soufiane. The best to you and your bees!

How did you not get stung im so scared of bees
Hi as a new bee keeper 1 year i am dreading this as i wish to do a split on my hive to create another , the first time i looked for her last year i was lucky she came to me i picked up a frame and who should poke her head up over the top its good that i have a marked queen makes it a lot easier the blue dot stands out .
Do they sting you at all? Or have you grown tough skin because of past stings? Respect what you're doing keep up the good work!
Well honey bees are very docile so they won't really attack you that much 😀
@@kirbybryden2226 as much??? My sons in-laws have a beekeeping farm in North Dakota and all I know is if I get stung once I am a crying baby all day! I love bees, but I don’t know how you do it!
I love how peaceful bees are
Finding queens... Mhmmm,middle school flashback
:)
So relatable
How do you not get stung over and over. I'm so amazed.
6:27 she’s so pretty
I think so too!
I just got my first hive and I'd love to know when drones will start attacking? More so the difference between flying around me vs coming to attack.
First thing I spotted was that bright green head
The paint on her thorax sure helps!
I just noticed that as he shifted the board with the Queen 👑 I was tilting my phone too. Like you do when you play video games 😂😂😂😂 I don’t even know why I’m here but CLEARLY I found it interesting!
Text me! 😏
Wow you know allot about bees. :)
Hi Safan
Thanks. It's my life's work. I'll bet you know a lot about something too!
Hi, I have accidently when removing my drone frame, brought home a queen but did not notice till 48 hours later. Will the bees accept her back or kill her when I re-intoduce her to the hive? Should I put her into a queen cage with some sugar to keep her safe for couple of days?
Hi Anne
I hope you put the queen back. In this case I would have put the queen in a cage with a small amount of candy so she gets out more quickly
This is amazing btw I found this video in the recommended...
Hi Ghost 22
Thanks! Lately a lot of non beekeepers seem to have found this video.
I just read the book Mad Honey it is so amazing what the bees do
