I can appreciate your review, John. I'd never really fancied one, but took a punt on an SG worn cherry with P90s in and was blown away to be honest. It's a definite keeper. Epiphone have upped their game.
Enjoyed that "hiding in plain sight" riffing. I did get a Harley Benton SG style. It is more of an ESP Viper style with 24 frets- the DC580. Way less expensive than the Epiphone, but is definitely not the same guitar. The Epi's pickups are a massive upgrade over the Roswells and I'm pretty certain the tuners and the hardware are better, too. Still, for the price, and as a lefty, Thomann gives me some choices I'd never have had with other makers. Great demo of a very nice guitar, John!
Ive got the Vintage V6S you mentioned John, and I absolutely love it. Made in Vietnam, and a very special guitar. Its only one of ten in my rack, but every time I pick it up...it feels just perfect. And...I play it clean nearly all the time. Great playing as usual John, and love that opening track! 😎
From Leo: Good review. I have had Les Pauls come and go in the 5 decades, never missing them. The SG's always made me happy, in fact they are the only solid body gibson style I like. Glad to hear this one is equipped to work like it should.
Very Cool Demo/Review. Awesome as always, thankyou. I have recently purchased second hand 2005 Gold Epiphone SG, I think Standard. Has 'full' scratchplate and "SG" Trussrod cover. Previous owner chopped body down removing horns and carved "Abigail Jane" "My Indigo Girl" into the scratchplate. Shame it is not 'Original' Condition, but is still one of my Favorite Guitars to play. Cheers
Hi John, no surprise to me that you like this guitar. I am sure you'll enjoy playing this guitar and that you're going to keep it, because a well manufactured SG like this is as versatile as a Tele, by the way... Looking forward to a couple of vids starring this SG. From Germany with best regards...
Great video, thanks John. Ok, I'll be perfectly honest and say that I was sold on this guitar even before watching the video. I'm a huge SG fan and have been since the early 70's. This video just proves to me that everyone needs at least one SG in their collection. Or if it's your only guitar, an SG can cover all the styles necessary! Cheers. 😊😎🎸🇺🇦
Nice ''Back in a rather dark shade of grey'' solo. That nice little legato lick is your signature move. Been trying to copy that for a while now. Thought about the Epi but went for the cheaper Harley Benton DC Custom, which I believe you also reviewed. Would be happy with either.
My Son's first Guitar was an old leftie Epiphone SG, he always thought it was lame compared to my early series Vintage SG, and his Epiphone had a bolt on neck which I thought strange. I put Iron Gear pups in his Epiphone and completely transformed it, now a rock machine, also had it pro setup, as it needed it! I do find SG's in general play a bit tight to me in standard tuning, including a Gibs I used to have, but really play nice down a semi, maybe I am getting old, but my early 70's Gibs SG I remember as having a wider profile? dunno?
That's a keeper if you ask me John, and definitely the best looking guitar you own IMO. Since you're gonna debate which guitar to sell to make room for it, I think it's about time you sold Blondie....🤣 When you get around to doing a new Harley Benton review, maybe revisit the TE90-FLT (since it has been improved since you first reviewed it)? Or one of the Explorers with EMG active PUs, although good luck finding them back in stock again any time soon. Nice 1 John!
The HB DLX Gotoh is a great little guitar, i love the simple layout with one volume and one tone pot( which also splits the coils), it plays and sounds great! I put the strap button where the nech joins the body and i have no neckdive issues at all! Great review John! I just don't like the veneer on the Epi...🎸🤘🎸
Well that composition suits the SG pretty well, nicely done! Lusted after SGs a lot as a kid, then missed an opportunity to buy a very pretty, white 3 pickup SG Custom in the '90s. Instead I chose the seller's 'Norlin era' boat anchor heavy Les Paul Custom, which sounded and played great but killed my shoulder every time I put it on. Shoulda taken the lighter SG.
I was in a guitar store a long time ago and just happened to try out some SGs. Tried out every Gibson and Epiphone in the place and the one that felt most comfortable to play was the entry level epiphone special. The sales guy said you don't want that. I said nope but it still plays the best out of all of them. All I had to do was mod it but I got a tele instead. LoL.
Give them a set-up and they would all "play" the same. Weight and balance are the only thing that cannot be tweaked. Choosing a guitar for its feel in the shop is like buying the bike that happens to have the saddle set at the fitting height.
Nice vid mate. Another keeper.🤪 I think we have the same problem, the house is too small for all the guitars. I told my wife to start looking for another house. 😅
Nice review John. I’m obviously missing something with SG’s / Gibson as l remember back in the day watching the Welsh band Man and thinking SG is for me , but why do they not thicken the body to get rid of neck dive as everyone l’ve picked up it’s an instant “nada” Seems such an easy fix….
Neck dive is not a problem to everyone, depending on the playing position. Most basses have neck dive. So it is a conscious decision to sacrifice the balance to weight in this case.
I never fully understood the "sticky" glossy neck thing either and wonder if it is a matter of body chemistry or playing manner. If the thumb doesn't try to slide along a tightly gripped neck the "feel" is not so relevant.
Mine plays brilliantly but sounds terrible on clean amp settings. I think the pickups are a bit of a one-trick pony and are designed for playing with distortion. I might put Filtertrons in it.
As i feared, the clean tones are too thick and bass heavy for me. I can't stand distortion, so a guitar has to excell with clean or i don't want one. At least i now know to avoid this SG. Thanks for your demo John.
That is what EQ pedals are for! I have a Boss GE-7 in the loop( it has a lot of noise plugged in the front, which disappears in the effects loop), use as a boost and to completely shape the tone!🎸🤘🎸
I do have to say... I think that I enjoyed your "tones" of the past, much more than what I'm hearing now (talking clean tones here...) going through the Positive Grid. As others seem to have mentioned (in my extremely limited observance) it seems awfully dark.
@@JRobsonGuitar What did you use this time on the "clean demo"? It sounded much "darker" than your "normal" clean sounds. (or is the Epi just that dark sounding?)
@@JRobsonGuitar I just listened again....you said at 4:30...that you were plugged into the Spark and that you liked the "Orange tones" from the Spark".... when you are playing the clean demo.... that is what I am referring to. Are you now saying that you were using the Spark? I'm really confused now!
I have to say clean those epiphone pickups sound pretty dark. I own a Gibson SG faded and its definately more bright and more mids in comparison. This Epiphone sounds great with a bit of dirt though, its a much more fat sound while my Gibson is much more clear and round when given some mustard.
I would buy an SG to have a thin, light, two humbucker guitar that looks good (if I liked the look) and would play anything that pick-up configuration offers on it, even if it doesn't sound like Angus Young. Is there anything more ridiculous than all these bearded old professors who pluck along "jazz chords" on their ES-335 copies (or anything similar) because they haven't moved past the 15 year old mental age of "looking the part"? It's a guitar, not a costume accessory.

Nicely done solo, John. 😎
Love the AC/DC inspired tune st the start and man that Epi SG sounds amazing.Superb playing!

I always think that putting a p90 style pickup in the neck position of an SG really unleashes some fantastic sounds, very raw
That was a really rockin‘ solo.

Robbie Krieger (sp?) of the doors got some great clean sg tones 👍
Well disguised nod to those Australian "Young" brothers LOL! Massive fun - huge sound - love it

I had a problem with gloss necks way back, but this seems to have sorted itself out on its own.

great video, great guitar. LOVE an SG
A bit of a grin on your face playing that intro, John :)
Great review, I can’t get over the veneer on this one.
Bring out your inner Angus John! Sounds great, and sounds like it's a keeper 😀

Nice guitar, very well played, as always, but is there really such a thing as "too many guitars"?
Mine plays brilliantly but sounds terrible on clean amp settings. I think the pickups are a bit of a one-trick pony and are designed for playing with distortion. I might put Filtertrons in it.
That's the best "not AC/DC" riff I've ever heard! BTW, since you want to change it up some, how about an acoustic guitar review?
Is the Revstar on the way? Looking forward to Your review.👍
Unboxing on Saturday, mate 👍
Ha ha! Great pastiche of a certain ACDC song. Sounds like it has heft in abundance. 👏👏👏

Sounds good John but knobs and switch all to close together for me.😂🤣

I didn't use the Spark in this demo piece.

Before I watch this is this a real '60's guitar or a reissue?
Epiphone didn't make SGs in the 60s
