Thanks for the RUSH reactions!!! Three virtuosos got it done for forty years, only other three-piece prog rock act to even come close to their majestic output was Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
Something worth keeping in mind: when you consider how relatively young the band members were when this was recorded, how much better players they became after a few more decades of practice.
The look on your face when Alex starts shredding in the beginning = Priceless. Most of us Rush fans had pretty much the same reaction whenever we got introduced to Rush, no matter what song introduced us to the band. For me, it was '2112'. A friend had the album and told me that as a drummer, I should listen to it. My jaw dropped as I heard not only the fantastic drumming from Neil, but also the musicianship from Alex and Geddy. That was a hell of an introduction for me. I've been a fan ever since 1979, when that friend loaned me his album to listen to. It wasn't long before I went out and got every album that they had out at the time.
when they went to record this originally they couldn't even do it in one take so they ended up putting it together from multiple recordings. this song was from 1978 so they didn't have all the hi-tech stuff they do now to make all those sounds from the guitar
It's a shame that in most Rush videos you can't see Geddy playing the synthesizer pedals with his feel while he's also playing bass. It's absolutely insane how much he is able to multitask.
Thanks for doing the live version, of this song! 1978 was around the time, that birthed, "Shred Guitar". Eddie Van Halen was just getting his chops, up to speed and Alex Lifeson played a large role, as well!
Thanks for this review brother. Made me think of few brothers that loved Rush as we grew up and have left us to seek the other side. Love how music can transport you back.
Thankful to have had the opportunity to see them live, their second-last concert (ever) here in Southern California (Irvine Meadows). Hands down, the most epic concert I've ever attended. Every sound put forth was on point. It's bittersweet reflecting on that moment now, realizing that Neal was most likely sick and suffering through that performance. Unreal.
Blessings to you on discovering so many incredible songs. While I am grateful to have known and loved them for so many years, I envy you for the euphoric feelings of wonder and awe that come with first listens. It's nice to kind of re-live that through your journey.
Nice review. Your expressions said it all. Questioning, wonder, Oh, I get it........ Their older songs are full of history lessons that apply to today and the future.
Red Barchetta from Exit Stage left, live is a good next step with Rush also Subdivisions, a little later in their career but a fantastic song. also if you haven't done Tom Sawyer, the video of them playing it in Le Studio in Quebec is fire!
Neal Peart just recently died in his late 60s I think. This video was recorded when these guys were in their early 30s. Niel Peart is one the greatest drummers of all time. Just ask the drummers of other Rock Bands. Three guys are making this sound. It sounds like five or six.
There seems to be a lot of talented artists in Canada, and it wasn't uncommon for guys who hung out together in school or wherever to get together in a garage or home and put together good music.
"La Villa Strangiato" is the last song on the album "Hemispheres", from 1978. This album marks the peak of the band's "progressiveness". It is worth listening to the track "Rush - Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres" (which occupies the entire A side of vinyl) ... NOTE: Interesting how Geddy's bass sounds very similar to Chris Squire's (Yes) ...
Let me preface this by saying I'm not any kind of musician, but music, and the making of it fascinates me. So over 50-odd years of listening to, reading about, watching performances of, and helping other people make, music, I think I know how Alex got that guitar sound you were mentioning near the beginning. Alex is using a Wah pedal to vary the volume output of the guitar. If you watch carefully, you can see he picks a string and after a fraction of a second, THEN you hear the sound. Pressing the pedal down lowers the volume, then letting up on it brings the volume back to normal. So what he's doing is pressing down the pedal all the way to kill the sound, then picking the string, then letting up on the pedal to bring up the sound. The Wah pedal can be used for different effects, not just what Alex does here. For a really good example of a different way to use it, check out "Theme From Shaft" by Isaac Hayes. If you've ever watched a lot of cheesy movies or TV shows from the '70's, you'll recognize the sound right away. While Hayes uses it to great effect in the song, it got WAY overused, and is now somewhat of a cliche'. Kind of like how Cher used autotune in "Believe" and now it's horrendously overused.
Before this album Hemispheres they flashed much talent. But by standards in this album in technical ability they were amateurs before in comparison to this. They became musician masters at 25/26 in age. After this they made it look like a cakewalk in what they did. Until you tried to play it yourself and that walk quickly vanishes.
The high scratching sound ruined it for me, and I love guitars. Charo on classical guitar is great. I hit thumbs up for your channel, not the song though they are good.
In their hey day, they were the best. Their will never be another lyricist/percussionist like the professor. So glad I had the chance to grow up with 2112, A Farewell to Kings and the greatest live album ever, All the Worlds a Stage.
I don't think at that time they even realized just how impossibly complex and perfect what they were doing was, they just 3 rock and rollers that could play their asses off, not extensively trained in any form, or composition, just perfectionists. Be hard pressed to find another 3, together, that not only plays it like that, but writes it, composes it, just blows my mind. We used to struggle to hold Saturday Night Special together ! Lol
These cats are on a different level! And to think over 40 yrs. worth of music! That's a rabbit hole worth going down! 🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥🔥. Truly enjoy your reactions, class everytime! 😎
A masterpiece. It always make me smile to see Alex, Neil and Geddy with that long hair. The sound of 10 from 3 musical savants. Just great. Hope to see more Rush in the future.
Not only my favorite Rush instrumental(no disrespect to YYZ) but my favorite instrumental of all time. An absolute masterpiece by 3 unbelievable musicians!
Greatest band of all time! Can you believe they were in their mid 20’s and playing at this level. I got to see them live twice Incredible! There will never be another band like Rush.
These guys are goat territory in my opinion. Saw them live 5 times, first one in 78 or 79- Hemispheres tour- not much technology and it didn’t matter. These 3 did it all and kept on doing it. By R40, my sons went to that show having heard rush for 20 plus years each. Great night, RIP to the professor of percussion. ❤️🎼🤘😎🔥
You brought tears to my eyes my friend. I seen them first on the permanent Waves tour and about 6 times after that but for the R-40 I took my 12 year old son to Philly with me for the life memory of it. And one of the rewards from that was him texting me wanting to come over jam to Rush. Thank you for sharing that with your children as well! Your a good Dad!!!
Nothing to say about the music, fantastic, amazing, one of my favorite bands of all time. The video, like a lot of filmed music at the time - the usual. Geddy is playing a great bass solo and it sort of briefly fades over to him. So much amazing playing by Neil and a closeup camera where you can hardly see what he is doing. So many old videos filmed this way - missing much of the "action". Not complaining though, I am thankful they exist at all and have loved watching my favorite bands from back in the day.
YES! OUR THREE CANADIAN MASTERS....... AND THAT'S HOW'S IT'S DONE OMG 100'S OF LISTENS STILL SUCH AN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING PIECE OF MUSICAL ART.... CHEERS
Vulgar display of musicianship. Average players are fleeing in panic. Professional players are fleeing in panic. A thousand lessons are always taught from a Rush song.
Pure genius. This is one of my top 3 favorite Rush songs, though not my fave performance of it (I prefer one of the later ones, where they are having a bit more fun with it). Just magical what the guys could do.
That sound that you wouldn’t have expected from a guitar was from Alex using a common technique called volume swells, which you can do with the volume knob on the guitar or with a volume pedal that is similar to a wah wah pedal, except that it controls volume, obviously. When you attack the note with the volume down and then increase it to swell up, it sounds different than regular guitar tones.
1978, bought the album the day of release. Ran home and put the headphones on. The sonic greatness that filled my ears still brings a smile to my face 43 years later. I have a very wide and varied music collection but, the one group that remains constant is RUSH. there will never be another band like them, and I'm so sad I'll never see them in concert again. RIP Professor. Enjoy the journey through the rabbit hole.
No other band like them... I dare you to try and find one, old or new, like Rush. some will say Triumph, and they're from Canada also, But Rush stands alone in the grand scheme of things.
...and the studio version is damm near identical. Seen them over 20 times since 76 and been to over 200 other shows and RUSH is at the top for accuracy on the stage.
The guitar solo effect is with the volume knob on the guitar itself. Rotate the volume knob off, then play the note immediately before turning the volume back up.
One of the most talented 3 pieces of men and instruments.RUSH.
This is what 3 virtuosos sound like together. A master class in music performance.
Only Rush would make their official video of them playing one of their most difficult songs live!
Lifeson making that thing Scream....Beautiful guitar work
Ah, the magic trio! Rush!!
Just imagine..... they were in their mid 20's when they composed this masterpiece.
I love watching people become RUSH fans. It makes me feel like a kid again.
Neil peart RIP, was a machine and the whole band is amazing. Overflowing with talent, they are the definition of talent
Yes!!!
Thanks for the RUSH reactions!!! Three virtuosos got it done for forty years, only other three-piece prog rock act to even come close to their majestic output was Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
Truly “Wow”. Three gifted musicians, playing this piece live. It”s speechless. Wow indeed.
Something worth keeping in mind: when you consider how relatively young the band members were when this was recorded, how much better players they became after a few more decades of practice.
Rush is a clinic of musicianship
The look on your face when Alex starts shredding in the beginning = Priceless. Most of us Rush fans had pretty much the same reaction whenever we got introduced to Rush, no matter what song introduced us to the band. For me, it was '2112'. The look on your face before you backed up the drum solo section said it all!!🔥🎧👍😂
when they went to record this originally they couldn't even do it in one take so they ended up putting it together from multiple recordings. this song was from 1978 so they didn't have all the hi-tech stuff they do now to make all those sounds from the guitar
Best guitar solo ever
A fan favorite. A very complex piece of music. It sounds amazing live. Truly talented musicians. Huge Rush fan since high school. Enjoy the ride!
Nothing growls like a Rickenbacker.
It's a shame that in most Rush videos you can't see Geddy playing the synthesizer pedals with his feel while he's also playing bass. It's absolutely insane how much he is able to multitask.
Eddie Van Halen was asked what it felt like to be the best rock and roll guitarist. He said I don't know ask Alex Lifeson.
Proud of our boys thank you!
Such an underrated guitar player
Reminds me of Prince's 🎸 and Bruno Mars tribute to Prince guitar solo on Tribute to Prince.
Thankful to have had the opportunity to see them live, their second-last concert (ever) here in Southern California (Irvine Meadows). Hands down, the most epic concert I've ever attended. All three other worldly musicianship. My favorite rock band of all. Great video work as always brother. Appreciate you. Blessings.
AWSOME REACTIONS!!!
Nice review. Your expressions said it all. Questioning, wonder, Oh, I get it........ Their older songs are full of history lessons that apply to today and the future.
Listening to this,ya weed gets properly calibrated!!Woooo and daayum!!
Yeah! More Rush and this is one of my favs! Three masters musicians. ✌🇨🇦
Just three very talented guys that really enjoyed jamming together. They sincerely enjoyed being around each other.
Yeah they could jam
Thank you for the great reaction, the look on your face is priceless!
It's Amazing how Cool, a Little Vaseline on the camera Lens can Be!!!!
Instant subscriber elevator… more Rush.
This piece is based on a nightmare that Alex the guitar
Player had.
That face you made in the first 20 seconds is why I love watching reactions!!!
rush-freewill
Talk about a 3 Ring Circus.......Greatest Show on Earth!
Red Barchetta from Exit Stage left, live is a good next step with Rush also Subdivisions, a little later in their career but a fantastic song. also if you haven't done Tom Sawyer, the video of them playing it in Le Studio in Quebec is fire!
Wow. You said it best. Great upload.
Excellent review/reaction. Keep pumping out the Rush content, the subscribers will come. ;)
Next Working Man live in Cleveland:)

stand out on this track is Alex's guitar work, the song he composed himself after a nightmare
How did these particular musicians of extraordinary talent ever find each other to form a band?
There seems to be a lot of talented artists in Canada, and it wasn't uncommon for guys who hung out together in school or wherever to get together in a garage or home and put together good music.
Canada's Holy Trinity
"La Villa Strangiato" is the last song on the album "Hemispheres", from 1978. This album marks the peak of the band's "progressiveness". Try ya some Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush
watch Roy Clark on the guitar bud you'll be amazed!!!
la villa strangiato the strange house is a rendition of a nightmare alex had, so ive been led to believe
Keep in Mind.... This was Written and Performed when they were in their TWENTIES!!!!

4 thumbs down? GTF out of here with that! Obviously 4 people that don't know great music when they hear it!
There is a joke which goes , the rest of the band is hiding in Neal Pearts mustash lol
If anyone doesn’t think Neil Peart was the best drummer to walk the earth , then you probably voted for joe Biden
Ummm, yeah. That's all I got to say. Other than...fuugggg.
The high scratching sound ruined it for me, and I love guitars.
Charo on classical guitar is great.
I hit thumbs up for your channel, not the song though they are good.
Fair enough. It’s about nightmares, so I guess he got his point across. ✌🏻 I remember Charo. Girl could play.
In their hey day, they were the best. Their will never be another lyricist/percussionist like the professor. So glad I had the chance to grow up with 2112, A Farewell to Kings and the greatest live album ever, All the Worlds a Stage.
In their heyday? They were the best and the GOAT prog rock band period. Find me a band full of virtuoso players with no egos? Exactly Rush is IT.
A Rembrandt, Michaelangelo, and picasso wrapped up in one.

I believe at the time there may have been four guys. They hid one under Neil's moustache.
This band was SO technically perfect...timing is impeccable!
Damn straight a masterpiece - such a musical journey AND long hair & the bonus: Neil’s 1970’s mustache!

Love them so much. It just makes me want to weep that I'll never see them live again.......
Not only my favorite Rush instrumental(no disrespect to YYZ) but my favorite instrumental of all time. An absolute masterpiece by 3 unbelievable musicians!
Hands down the greatest 9:37 minutes of rock instrumental. Period. Stop
Greatest band of all time! Can you believe they were in their mid 20’s and playing at this level. I got to see them live twice Incredible! There will never be another band like Rush.
Lerxst got that sound out of his guitar simply by using a foot pedal volume control.
So glad to see more Rush on the channel! Thank you, Sir.
Amazing what three guys can do live
I completely agree

A thousand lessons are always taught from a Rush song.
Saw them live on May 9, 1980 at the Palladium in NYC, a truly memorable performance!
Alex is playing a synthesizer with his feet for a good portion of the song. Geddy is also playing synth with his feet as well as hands.
Pure genius. This is one of my top 3 favorite Rush songs, though not my fave performance of it (I prefer one of the later ones, where they are having a bit more fun with it). Just magical what the guys could do.
best part, fast forward to 8:37 when he's blown away by the Mozarts of our time at work

Uriah Heep,Salisbury.Boom!
Neil’s stick work and the 3:50 mark is so incredibly cool.
I remember that band,
Wondering what ever happened to them..?
Please react to the Rush song The spirit of Radio.
BTW, Neil's Last name is "PEERT" .
time out = eargasm
Bad-Ass talent'
Priceless reaction at 8:25.
ROFL. I love the 'time out'!
🔥🔥🔥GREAT REACT!!!🔥🔥🔥
