  • This is a short section of clip taken from the movie "Ribbon of Iron". It was a movie made up by Paul Clark in 1992 when John and I were rostered to take him to De Aar and back aboard our pride 25NC. I last heard of Paul in 1994 and have never seen this footage or the DVD on sale anywhere. Paul, if your around then please get in touch.

Thanks for sharing. Lovely insight as to how the end of steam came about. Enjoyable commentary. 👍👌

Steffan, I managed to safe Enchantress and got her to Sandstone Railway where she lay untouched for years. About 5 years ago Glasgow wanted a big loco for their Transport Museum and so Enchantress was the chosen loco!! All going to plan until some big mouth twats in SA started doing their best to stop her leaving SA saying they had loads of work for her! Sadly they won and she has stood rusting away ever since and never been looked at ever since!! Where are the big mouths now????

I have loads of videos Stefan but many of them are not worth posting on UA-cam. The quality over the years has sadly faded. I only bought a video camera about 1987 so anything before that is only photos. Are you not on Facebook?? You can see loads of photos on Footplate memories etc on FB. As for Enchantress, she got rather stripped while awaiting purchase so I had to rebuild her and she did steam once after that. Now she lays rusting!! I will never get that anger out of my blood!!

"The big black one you're riding in the video?" Hope that doesn't ever get quoted out of context...

The SAR 25s Stefan were far far more modern than anything that ever ran in UK. In fact most SAR locos were far more modern and better built than any UK machines. SAR spent money on their machines design where UK just built basic machines. The cabs of UK locos are terrible to work in and things such as spring gear, reversing gear, rods and many more things just show how much better SAR locos were. Take a 15F and UK 9F and compare!! The 15F wins hands down. Can you send me your email address?? Ta
