- We took the 10x12 Harbor Freight greenhouse, and modified it in order to run a full hydroponics setup. We used 4 gallon buckets with perlite and organic nutrients. Each plant is organic, and we are able to fit 30 buckets in the greenhouse. In the future, we will post an update during our harvest.

Thanks! We use a temp controlled fan to keep the air flowing when it's hot out, and the little auto opening roof vents help some as well. The heat is certainly something to look out for!
Minor correction, the automatic roof vents open and close based on the temperature inside the greenhouse, not the outside as stated.

Hey, some thoughts for anyone who sees this and likes to build it. I think the dutch buckets are too close together for tomatoes and the cucurbits family plants.. Also, the greenhouse is probably not high enough for the tomatoes, due to them being raised half a meter. You are probably okay for the peppers. Maybe you can give your plants a boost by using dedicated hydroponic nutrients. The 0-4-4 does lack a lot of punch! No nitrogen at all. I recommend the general hydroponics 4-18-18, combined with Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom salt) and Calcium Nitrate for the nitrogen. This is their tomato blend, which works pretty well for peppers and cucurbits. Your plants will double in size!
Also, you might consider putting a lid on the reservoir, to hinder algae growth.
I would put the tomatoes in the center with supports, and short plants on the outside. I would also dig a hole for the reservoir and put the pails on the ground.
I think he has a 3-part nutrient system, as there were two other jugs in the video. Shouldn't be stored in the sun and heat.

Thank you! We keep a plecostomus fish that eats the algae in the tank, and there's a filter on the water pump. We also have a filter on the return like as well.
What is the size of your feeder line into the bucket? I have tried to different pumps and am only able to get my water go about 6 feet even when my pumps say the can go 25 feet, any thoughts on how I can get it to go to my last bucket?

awesome setup, would you ever consider doing 2 layers of plants to double the produce or would the top layer disrupt the bottom layer?
When the plants really started growing, they sprouted up quite a bit. I do not think that it would have been feasible. In our follow-up video, you can get a much better look at how much the plants grew!

I do not know enough about nutrients, but I imagine you could! We just use store bought nutrients.
Definitely if you compost the proper materials and use the runoff water that comes out of your compost bin. Is packed with nutrient and bacteria.
I bought one just like it and so did my neighbor. Both of them blew down with the first little win. Mine was so twisted up and bent I couldn't salvage it. My neighbor could salvage his. And he had to reinforce it with heavier aluminum and 2x4 lumber. They are made of the lightest aluminum you can find. The sliding doors never did work right. Save your money and build one out of lumber!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FYI, not all hydroponics are RDWC. For small growers F & D is much simpler, and works quite well

Do you have springtails problem?
Tip: make a good light proof cover for your reservoir lid, or your gunna have a system full of algae and nutes levels and PH all over the place. Also too much sun exposure causes some of the nutrients to Precipitate out of your mix this means that they get so hot from the suns rays they kinda melt togther into large clumps and fall to the bottom of your rez. Worst part is you wobt ve able to just stir them back up youve gotta totally remix the nutrient solution to reppace whatever mineral or nutrient it was that fell out.

One wonders how this would work with a 2 to 3 foot snow load.
I'd imagine that might be too much for the flimsy aluminum to handle over time, but I'm not sure!

We have not had that issue, but if that is a problem, there are water chillers made specifically for hydroponics!
What was the rough cost of this entire setup: greenhouse, blocks, boards, buckets, pearlite, pump, pipes, etc? Maybe not include the cost of the concrete.

Hello, what do you recommend to heat during cold months?
I don't know the best solution, but for our outdoor trees we use a smudge pot with some diesel fuel overnight. The problem is that diesel fuel is way too damn expensive nowadays
Where did you get your buckets and lids from?
We bought them from U-Line, which had the best prices but there is a shipping charge to keep in mind. It was the best deal for us!

Only thing that would enhance this video is if you add an extra 5-10 minutes to this video with your harvest update, so we can see the results of this setup right here, and don't have to search for that video when it comes; but I understand its good to have multiple videos too. I just think it would enhance this video even more. Also, finally give a rough estimate of the setup cost, and maybe even how much it cost up until harvest if you can. I think that would really push the likes and subscriptions to your howto videos.

To be honest, I never expected this video to get so much traction, and have so many requests for follow-ups and improvements. I'm going to release a video in the next couple of days, explaining some of the technical aspects and some of the gadgets and goodies, like the fan and thermostat. what kind of winds do yu get. I cant imagine it wont take much ,especially the gusts
Not sure about speed, but in the high desert in southern California, we can get some pretty intense winds at times. That's why we poured a concrete foundation and used self-tapping screws to hold the panels to the frame
@@FormulaJake I live down the road in the PalmSprings area of Ca. Our winds are frequently enough to be 15 to 35 mph with gusts. Fortunately theyre only in the first 2 or 3 months, as I recall. The constant vibrations a wind causes expensive cloth lined car covers to wear spots in the paint and anywhere there is a snug contact interface between the plastic or cloth against a harder surface,clamps or car fender s.
I think I recall youve had this "structure for while and vibration hasnt worn holes or rips at the plastic sheeting and where it contacts the structure/clamp mechanism?
Right on. We haven't had any issues with vibration or strong winds harming our structure. Without the concrete foundatuon, I think it's possible that it would have blown away. And without the self tapping screws, the panels certainly would have been blown off by the wind

I love your setup. But I have one question. Can we grow fish and use fish's fertilizer instead of using organic nutrients? Do you have any experience with the nutrient for planting with fish's fertilizer?

what's the point of growing each plant in a separate container?
By growing plants in individual containers, you can change water flow and sanitize/separate/remove plants from the line without stopping the whole service or disrupting the other plant's roots. It's also cheaper and easier to grow multiple varieties in this way, the Dutch Bucket method (also known as Deep Water Culture), because no custom containers are needed and they can occupy a more flexible footprint than a single, larger container. There are other methods for hydroponics but DWC allows better structure for climbing plants like tomatoes and cucumbers or bushy plants like peppers.
So outside of cost, mobility, flexibility, variation of crops, and ease... There isn't really any other benefit over growing with other methods like raft (expensive and big), media bed (size prohibitive and more difficult maintenance) or nutrient film technique (difficult setup and less diverse).

You got nutrient problems
Very nice set up, but you missed some key components of running a hydroponic cultivation. PH, PPM during the various stages of growth, Oxygenating your water... You have a float valve topping off your reservoir, but I don't understand how you PH and top off your nutrients unless you have an in line mechanism injecting fertilizer after the valve, How you keep the nutrient solution consistent is beyond me.
You have blueberries which like acidic soils at like 5.2 PH and peppers which like standard soils at a 6.2 to 6.8 eating the same fertilizer regime while being isolated to inert growing mediums and being fed an organic nutrient solution which can probably only be uptaken at a PH of like 6.5...
I have no idea how you make this work and I've grown a lot for a long time in a tone of different ways.
My advice to someone trying this would be to instead of using inert growing media like perlite or hydro ton to grow various kinds of plants would be to instead. Buy Peat moss, coco coir, earthworm castings, pumice, oyster shell, calcium carbonate lime stone, fish bone meal, bone meal, gypsum, a bit of biodynamic compost, some course sand and save up some used coffee grounds and egg shells. Mix these ingredient into two balanced blends (the distributors will have the ratios but you'll be doing half of that per container) The acidic plants will have a blend that's heavy on gypsum, coffee grounds and fish meal, while the neutral soil plants will have a mix that's a bit heavier on lime stone. Once you have blends that will maintain there soil PH and consistency for a reasonable amount of time without requiring adjustments Feel free to set up a reservoir to mix your fertilizer with a pump and timer, adequate drip irrigation, and a drain line that rather than recirculates back into your reservoir is instead drained into an adjacent planter or garden bed. The irrigation frequency has to be adjusted throughout the growth cycle to maintain a relative soil moisture and dry back, Your nutrient solution should be drained and remade from scratch every week. Use a nutrient regime that actually works for soils and allows you to let mix for a week without it falling out of solution or losing the Potential hydrogen PH needed to feed the plants. Also oxygenate your water and get the ammonium chloride out of it. A product i would recommend is the Canna Terra Vega and flora or Bio bizz i believe they have product that is good for soils and can be mixed and applied for a week or so before it falls out of solution. ideally you'll only use a fertilizer that wants to be PH's at 6.5, but some of the more synthetic one require lower PH and can work if your mixes are reduced to less amendments.
There's alot to plant science and if you can make the set up in the video work More power to ya, but If you can get a well rounded regime that's mixed correctly in a growing medium that's appropriate for the desired plant health you'll get a lot further it think.
Really hydroponics is designed around producing monocrops. If you have an inert growing medium with tomato's in it and the only available food source is a liquid feed designed for tomato's? Well obviously tomatoes are going to grow well in it, same for peppers and thing's like tomatoes, but trees aren't gonna like it as much, berries and grapes aren't going to do well in an environment designed for peppers and tomatoes. Specializing soil mixes and applying well rounded fertilizers to enhance the plants nutrient uptake while giving the ideal root zone for the plants to digest and harbor native beneficial organisms just ends up being more productive if you want variety.
If you just want peppers? Stone wool, synthetic fertilizers are really productive.
