Dear friends,
I'm thrilled to share with you my latest music video, "Ukrainian Piano Medley," featuring my original arrangement of three beautiful Ukrainian songs for solo piano. This project holds a deeply personal significance to me, and I'd like to take a moment to share the journey behind its creation.
Two years ago, as the world was shaken by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, I found myself profoundly moved by the events unfolding. It was a Friday afternoon, and I vividly remember driving to my synagogue, listening to the news, when I heard a Ukrainian opera singer passionately sing the Ukrainian National Anthem. The emotions overwhelmed me, and I had to pull over.
Upon arriving at the synagogue, I felt compelled to respond to this world event through music. With the support of my cantorial soloist and Rabbi, I was given the opportunity to perform the Ukrainian National Anthem as a piano solo during the service. Though I had never played the piece before, I improvised a rendition from the depths of my heart.
But it didn't end there. I felt a calling to delve deeper into Ukrainian music. Discovering the works of composer Mykola Lysenko, I decided to craft a medley incorporating two of his pieces, "Doumka-Choumka" and "Prayers for Ukraine," alongside the national anthem. The process of arranging and recording was a labor of love, fueled by my desire to honor Ukraine and its people.
Yet, despite the support of my musical peers, I battled imposter syndrome and self-doubt. A few people's opinions nearly derailed my confidence, causing me to delay the release of this recording for a year. So I released the recording last March. But today, on the second anniversary of Russia's aggression in Ukraine, I refuse to let fear silence my voice and wanted to add the visuals of the beautiful country of Ukraine and her people in this music video.
Now more than ever, as the city of Avdiivka falls under occupation, we must stand in solidarity with Ukraine. Though this war may seem distant, we are all interconnected, and we must not allow evil to prevail.
I urge you to listen to "Ukrainian Piano Medley" and join me in supporting Ukraine in any way you can. Whether through music or activism, let us harness the power of art to inspire change and cultivate hope in the face of adversity.
