  • Segment 5/11: Is it possible to kill algae, cure cyanobacteria, prevent dinoflagellates and have thriving corals by finding a perfect balance between Nitrate and Phosphate level? Are there "best" Nitrate and Phosphate levels for a reef tank? Can the Redfield Ratio from the ocean be the answer?
The discussion of reef chemistry related to phosphate levels and nitrate levels in our reef tanks is an ever evolving topic. If we just put our heads in the sand and avoid exploring Nitrate and Phosphate relationships further, we might be leaving bunch of opportunity on the table.
So if there is a magic ratio how do we achieve it if our fish foods won't let us?

The thing about ratios in nature: most have an optimal number for a specific organism.
But, that organism will still conduct the same process in a more or less extreme ratio. And other organisms in the same biome and even the same niche, may have an optimal ratio above or below that of the first.
So finding a perfect ratio is highly unlikely. But an optimal range is likely possible.
I'll use a much better understood process as an example: a compost pile. The "optimal" ratio is 30:1 (Carbon:Nitrogen)
But it is actually a functional range, you will still have a pile that composts at 20:1 or 65:1. The organisms conducting the decomposition and mineralization have an acceptable range, they have a gradient.
The closer you get to 30:1, the more optimal the rate of decomposition. As you go higher or lower, you find limiting factors.
But is it a prefect ratio? No, it's the ratio for a single organism. Not for every species inhabiting that pile.
If I have a very small pile at 30:1 (pile=concentration), I will grow only a few million bacteria through decomposition. If I have an enormous pile at 30:1, I will grow billions of bacteria through decomposition.
Here's the kicker, once I can no longer feed that species and my pile runs out; regardless of which pile. That species dies back and other forms of life assert themselves.
Bacterial numbers scale; so long as you provide them stable elements for their life cycle. And when that is disrupted, the colony crashes. which creates waste and drives other populations.
I would highly suspect that is true for prokaryotes in the ocean, as it is true for prokaryotes on land.
That said, this video; this series of discussions are excellent. I'm agreeing with what you said, just offering an isolated example where we have abundant data.
These ratios pop up all over the place in nature. What they are, is a ratio where two or more nutrient gradients interact in at an optimal rate.

I’m a little late to this party, but I certainly appreciate the information. I know Randy Holmes-Farley has discussed this many times over the years and essentially says the same. The biggest difficulty, as he points out, is that it is nearly impossible to maintain the Redfield ratio in a small closed systems such as home aquariums. Mainly because of the risk of dropping them to zero, thus creating more problems.
To try and maintain .03 PO4 and .3 NO3 in home aquarium would be extremely challenging to say the least. Some use a system similar to DSR where they essentially drop both to zero and then dose to the correct levels, but even this is very difficult to maintain and master. I think out of practicality, we will end up with a compromise of maybe 20:1 or greater. Most use the 100:1, but not because of any science behind it, but because it’s attainable.

I wonder if food companies are going to start taking notice of this and trying to come out with food that has a better ratio so we aren't fighting ourselves with the food we use and our target nutrient and waste levels.

I'm anxious to see these results. Often you hear of many beautiful tanks achieving success with PO4 around .02ppm and NO3 around 2-5ppm which would be a 1:100 - 1:250 ratio.

Would it be suitable to say "first"? 🤣 so again, as mentioned on the other video ocean water testing is not a good indication. The billions of ocean life consumes the nutrients and when testing it seems low, yet when testing the incoming intake, it is actually alot higher. I start showing diatoms in a new tank and I will start feeding reef roids, even with no life in the tank other than bacteria. Vodka as carbon source is added and few days later the diatoms are nowhere to be found. It is unfortunate that in this hobby people are made to believe that top dollar equipment and top dollar additives is the law when actually you an do most of the reef stuff using your local grocery, pharmacy and liquor store. Love this series of videos by the way, not teying to sell anything other than some knowledge. If I lived in the US, wohld have supported you for sure.

I have a simple mixed reef setup, 75gal tank no sump, cheap $50 instant ocean HOB protein skimmer, and an instant ocean $80 9w HOB UV, Seachem 75 HOB, Icecap ATO, and a Jebao CP-90 (To my knowledge The Jebao is manufactured in the SAME building by the same company as the more expensive Icecap version, lol), 2 cheap 36"-48" 35watt Fluval AQUASKY lights.
I have 8 fish and around 25 different corals in my tank, I have never lost a coral, some of my Stonys have grown from thumbnail size to over 12" round in under a year and I dose NOTHING, I target feed NOTHING. All I do is feed my fish and a 10gal a week water change and I use the basic RedSea salt mix, not the pro version and my tank has been running this way for years with great success.
Overpriced equipment and additives don't contribute to success in the hobby at all it just makes some wealthier off the ignorance of others.

@@robertt8874 exactly my sentiment. So I started in this hobby around 2000.. give or take a year or two in either direction. I knew nothing off dosing and additives, in fact, i got the tank with 3 fish and live rock for free. So I ran tap water with bags of reef salt(cannot even remember the brand) normal acclimation and I never list a fish, I even kept predators like lion fish qith clowns and damsels.. anyway long story short, I then lost all of the fish when I had a tank crack at 1am in the morning. I did not have spare salt mix or spare tanks, I kept them all in a buckey of water I managed to save during thw leak, but thw water qas too little and they all died by the morning beforw I could go get a tabk and salt. I was devastated and I decided to try and fix my dead fish, so made it an obsession. I could jot afford expensive equipment and I then just read all I could find and tried many things. Now I run a 110 gallon with no skimmer and use basic things I can find at the pharmacy to dose nitrates becuae of the needs for the corals to consume as well as doaing carbon(vodka) to feed bacteria. I run Chaeto instead of a skimmer and actually love sitting watching the fuge with the living pods, aiptasia and bristle worms.

@@turbocpt1 I have nothing against sumps I have used them in the past. I've been in the hobby for over 15yrs myself and been through several different tank setups. I currently 7 aquariums set up in my home🤣 just 2 are salt the rest are fresh
I gave my entire 90gal reef-ready set up to my brother 2yrs ago because I wanted a smaller set up so I would have less maintenance to keep up with. I set up a 55gal reef...... that didn't last long, 3 months later my LFS was moving and selling 75gal Marineland tanks for $50 LOL I couldn't stop myself. Now I'm fighting the urge to re-setup the 55gal I originally bought as another reef tank since it's not in use, lol.
