BRS is one of those very few companies I see myself always supporting. Always open to sharing all they have learned and even taking on projects to test and learn what we might not yet know. I for one am happy to pass my money this way.
Only bad experience I have had so far... Came mostly to bad timing and BRS was just the distributor. I had ordered a boatload of Tropic Marin Pro salt to be sure I had enough salt to last my new tank at least the first year. Given supply issues with Tropic Marin, but the outstanding track record of quality... I thought nothing of spending as much on Salt as I had for most my equipment.
Unfortunately, my timing meant I ended up with some Turkey-made TMP and did not figure out the issue until I had lost 90% of my LPS, and 100% of SPS. Softies made it through but didn't seem to grow much. Even my Hardy Rock flower anemones didn't like whatever it was... over half died during a several-week period.
I do not know nor can I blame the Tropic Marin Pro salt. I keep complete records and tests regularly. My tank was pristine, truly pristine... However, at months 6-7, all bets were off...That is when I decided to try the 200-gallon buckets next, though I still had multiple smaller boxes unopened of what I had been using since day 1.
I was only one Water change into the second bucket of the 200-gallon bucket of Turkish-made TMP. My Corals had already begun starting to look pastel and seemed to stop growing. Mind that I had already done 200 gallons of WC on my 100-gallon system. So my tank already slowly looking a bit worse for wear over the weeks but then everything seemed to start going downhill.
The ONLY change to my tank was the new batch of salt. I make my own RODI and test it. Tested new salt after mixing did not show anything obvious, besides ALK mixing up slightly lower than what I had been getting from the boxes, 6.2-6.4 vs the 6.8-7.0 on the small boxes. I am using the same Soda Ash to boost alk on fresh mixed batches. I thought maybe the Soda Ash was bad/contaminated. So I sourced and made a new batch. Tank health continued downward. I removed all the corals I was able and put them back into my coral QT. Did a 100% water change with fresh salt from German packages and within 2 days everything was opening again and coloring back up.
*** I did note an odor from the Turkey Salt Buckets that did not seem present in the German packaged salt I still had on hand.***
I attributed the downfall in coral health to something I was overlooking. Tore my hair out for many months. Then one day while on the R2R forum I was looking up something separate and by chance saw the comments and threads related to similar issues I was having. With one commonality among all of us, Turkey produced Tropic Marin Pro Reef salt.
I won't lie, I was at first enraged. Especially given the value of lost time and all the Coral, Money, and sanity lost. Eventually, that progressed to my being happy. Because I at least had something to try and look into.
(At this time I still did not know or understand that two separate factories were making salt for Tropic Marin/ Fauna Marin. Even if I did know. I likely would've thought nothing of it. I spent top dollar for "Pharma Grade" to prevent any worries on that front... So why would I think Turkey made or German made had a bearing?
I hope we can get some sound scientific or chemistry-related answers to help us all figure out how we could have tanks crashing coinciding with each other. The only known common variable being we all had recently begun using TMP salt produced and packed in Turkey.)
Soon as Id read a few threads I Immediately went to the basement and checked what stock remained and where was it made, thankfully the bulk remaining was German made and I had only ended up with 400 gallons of Turkey Salt, 2 x 200-gallon buckets. One of which had been completely used and the other a large 40% water change, six different times over a period of 12 days (every other day). Soon as I started using the older TMP German boxes I still had from the original order. The tank seemed to be better daily. Unfortunate for me. All the die-off / crash has caused an inversion of my Redfield ratio which lead to dino. I quickly managed that but then the dreaded Bryopsis bloomed. (so clearly I was not as diligent as I thought). It appears it came from an Astrea snail, or two. I clean their shells the best I can and keep them in observation before going into DT. I do not use chemicals or Hydrogen Peroxide on them because they are so fragile. I dip, QT, and observe EVERYTHING for my system. Even that was not enough.
Long story short. Accidents happen. Micro and Macro biology is something none of us see and few have a Microscope or even think to take samples and use one... At least not before the issue grows big enough to see detrimental changes. The only thing constant about Reef chemistry is that it is constantly changing. If you're unable to test for and balance the chemistry and ecology required for the life forms you have introduced... Problems will be inevitable and not an if but a when.
I have undoubtedly learned many lessons I will never forget in a short time. I waited 15 years to set up my first personal reef. Even then, especially as an amateur/hobbyist, 15 years is not enough time to learn it all and it never will be. This hobby is one that has unfortunate side effects and a 'Pay to play' aspect that cannot be excused. All the book learning, class time, and videos watched will never cover every issue that could happen in your own system. Ocean Ecology and Biology are among the most complex on our planet. We cannot expect to perfectly emulate without issue. Certainly not on our first try, or even try number five, six, and seven. It is a hobby where you're required to actively learn daily or suffer losses.
It would be so simple to say the Salt killed my tank. I can share with 100% confidence that my anecdotal evidence is nothing more than that. Anecdotal! I only wish I had sent out regular ICP test throughout the process to have a more precise look at as many variables as possible. It very well could have been the salt and maybe it had some type of accidental adulterant/contaminant added that is not commonly tested for. I like to think the salt was just the final nail in the coffin and through off an already unstable system to the point of detriment. Even though from an eye and parameters test, everything seemed perfect
The best factories on the planet are still prone to human error. I initially told myself I would never purchase another Tropic Marin product. After cooling down, becoming rational, and seeing, Lou, the CEO of TM stepped from behind his desk to speak up on the matter and look into it. Well, it renewed my faith in Tropic Marin/ Fauna Marin for having the courage to stand up and not remain quiet hoping for the issue to self-resolve or die out quietly. I doubt that any manufacturer, no matter their claims, can prove a perfect track record. The real deciding factor for me is of course quality-focused first but also customer service driven. What does the company do when a problem does arise? How did they inform their customers? Did they inform the customers? Did they recall? Did they refund? Do they even care?
Running any business is tough. Made tougher when large-scale problems occur. Problems that have been potentially distributed worldwide. Once your product is in so many different places and types of systems. The challenge becomes nearly insurmountable. Especially in a case of a potentially bad salt mix. Mostly because so many other variables do exist. From how individuals mix and store their salt to what parameters their systems are kept. Reef tanks are like snowflakes, not any two are the same. So in that sense, I get why Tropic Marin waited as long as they did before making a public statement. I can only imagine the storm they are dealing with. I hope they manage to weather the storm. Most of all, I hope they are able to offer us some type of explanation. I am not asking to get back the thousands of dollars I lost in livestock... I am asking for a real answer. So I can know what to test for or look for in the future.
I know why I found my tank for a deal. After suffering such a financial and mental battle it is easy to walk away and never go back to the hobby.
    Rant over lol..
I love BRS and know they wish for our success in the hobby. I know Tropic Marin is proud of what they produce and certainly wouldn't want to harm anyone intentionally. Sometimes we need to step back and see things for what they are. So we can then move forward and continue doing what we all love.
Don't get caught up in the negative. Learn from it, move forward, and in time may your Ecology and Biology be strong!

If all of the corals were from the same tank, it's fair to assume that even though you don't see a pest, it could be present. In this case, I would usually QT all of the 10 corals together and treat them as if they all had the pest at hand.

Most of these dips are for a very short time period; usually just a couple of minutes. The changes in our tanks may be more subtle, but they're usually sustained over a longer period of time. Of course, some corals tolerate different dips and changes better than others.

Coral dips have been a pretty normal part of the reefing hobby for the last decade or two. While the dips absolutely help reduce the chance for pests, they don't kill everything, so a thorough visual inspection for any eggs or other critters is still a crucial part of the process when adding a new coral to your tank. Of course, having a coral QT setup helps as well.
