    @jay lippman Thank you for the shout out to my channel - nice surprise when I started watching this one! You can right click the clip in timeline and choose input colour space - the A7siii clip not working as it doesn't know it is a SONY clip because its H264 judging by your interface (it says the codec under each clip). You can set it in input colour space once you are in a colour managed workflow. All the best, love your channel - Thanks again for the shout! Appreciated!!!

      Thanks so much Darren! I'm definitely going to try that when I sit down to edit tomorrow!

    I downloaded a stable 17 version yesterday and watched several tuts to understand those new HDRI tools, yours seems the best, subbed!
    Seems like those wheels can do everything like standard ones plus more

    So funny you are talking about the HDR color wheels. I started using them last week and found them to be incredibly useful and unique and thought to myself "Self, why isn't anybody talking about these things? They are pretty cool!" Well self, there you go... lol. Thanks Man!

    Resolve has input color profiles, but it doesn't have a profile for each camera, sadly, the EOS R5 isn't present.

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 роки тому

      No but Canon c-log is, which is what you would want to choose, right?

      @@JayLippman Right, but there are some issue to consider, recorder internally and externally, using Canon EOS Original color Matrix and Neutral, which also includes BT/Rec.2020 and BT/Rec.709, and off course, video levels and full levels, internal uses full, external uses full but you have to set it on Resolve because Resolve believe its video level, the Ninja recordings, it is quite a mess hahahahaha

    When I use the DR color management - it appears to deal with the LOG footage. Not sure why it is not for you. You can right click the clip in the timeline ( color page ) and check the "Input Color Space" to see what REsolve assigned. They are usually right, but sometimes a different Gamma is used - so your first node you can right click and choose the correct gamma for your clip. Slog-3 when I see a waveform for it - it is midrage heavy - but yours looks really compressed in the middle. Not sure why, but I tested the log footage and it does the conversion. Might be that someone used too small a gamut when they filmed that girl. Anyway it's good to know how to switch the Input space anyway when the software gets it wrong, or yuou want to bypass and use your own LUTs or grade the log footage from scratch.
    The HDR wheels, as I said from the launch of v17, I think that colorists will be going to that tool more and more. Great advancement. Also desat the blacks works, but for some reason I always have gotten used to pushing the complimentary colors to neutralize them - so I turn on the RGB picker value and just see which color is being cast into the shadows and push the wheel to get the RGB values the same. It is a good way to see how the shadows are exposed as well - if they are sitting above 16 for a color value I know that they are good to go.
    I missed your live video this week - we had a family emergency - Our main TV died and I had to get a new one. During this quarantine, it was pretty important - Cheers and stay safe.

      Thanks Jim! Yeah the LOG worked fine when I was in Davinci YRGB, but as soon as I switched to color managed it started acting weird. Ill check the Input Color Space. Thanks for the tip!

      @@JayLippman Jay I just tried in version 4 and the Sony s-log 3 isn't working right. I have V-log stuff and Arri etc. all working, but something strange going on here. It was working in version 3 beta.Maybe someone else can test it and confirm.

    How did you export this video, So it has no banding in the background wall and in the sky?
    UA-cam doesn't allow that...

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 роки тому

      You need to export a 10-bit video for that. Not sure if it's available in the free version

    Nice tutorial. At around 10:30, you mention the face starting to look weird if you mess around too much because you've got both shadow and highlight detail. I used the wheels for the first time last night and noticed that the shadow side of my face looked like one large birthmark (I was seated next to a window with strong light on one side, deep shadow on the other). Is that the kind of thing you mean? I imagine you can play around with the transitions and the position to fix that?

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 роки тому

      A of of that has to do with lighting. What I was talking about was more of my face having very little contrast and being a little splotchy with the color.

      @@JayLippman Thank you!! Just about finishing shooting this film, after 5 months, I should be done by New Years, and about ready to get into the deep with Davinci now. I'm a theater performing artist, which means that entire part of my life was "canceled for the foreseeable future", and also, like you, I come from the audio world, Pro Tools, Logic, Sonar, Cubase, etc, etc, etc... and so, this video editing world is brand new for me, but because of people like you, I'm learning really fast. Working on this ambitious film, probably going to be between 80-100 minutes, based on a solo play of mine that was supposed to open this past June here in NYC... Wrote a completely different screenplay, so the play could still have the possibility of a future, and find myself obsessed with filmmaking now. Saved me from serious Covid depression. (along with running.. that always saves me) ;) Anyway... thanks for putting all this amazing information out there, it's generous, and I'm certain you are enabling a lot of people to create art, and feed their spirits during a very difficult time. Peace and respect. To you and all of these incredible UA-camrs.

    Even when working with h.264 8bit 4:2:0 files, better results are obtained than when using standard color wheels. I checked it out.

    Thanks Jay, another great video! I am trying to create the effect of candle light flickering on a person's face in Resolve i.e. like a dark background (night time) with only the light from a candle lighting up the person's face. Is that possible and if so please can you do a video on how to achieve it? Thanks again!
    👍

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks! The easiest way to do that is to create a power window around the person, and then increase the temperature inside the power window and apply the flicker effect from the OFX menu.

    Except you never made the picture of you out on the porch look good. It looks terrible. You’re in a blue haze shadow and the fence is still totally over exposed. I thought the point of the video was to make that look good.

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 роки тому +2

      Nope! The point was to show you how to use the HDR color wheels. If I wanted to make it look perfect, the video would have been a lot longer.
