Tannoy Dual Concentric HPD 385's In DIY Rectangular GRF Cabinets

  • I was lucky to find a pair of Tannoy HPD 385's on eBay at a knock- down price some years ago, they were damaged, so that was a benefit to me as I knew that Lockwood Audio in London UK were capable of reckoning them for a reasonable cost.
    I researched which cabinets to build and settled on the Rectangular GRF design. Some say that this is not the best cabinet and I possibly agree, several people on the web have built the GRF's and then converted them to a ported design. I have stuck with the GRF horns and with a lot of fiddling, I am now happy with the result, although they are possibly a bit bass light.
    If you are looking to build these, I hope that the video will help you.

    Stunning! Very grateful you shared your meticulous efforts, very pleasing to watch. I have just bought a pair of HPD 385 speakers in original condition, so starting the journey.

      Thanks for your kind comment. I hope that you have a good time building the cabinets. I might consider a ported version if I ever did another pair as the Rectangular GRF's are a bit bass light, it's not an issue with me as I also use a Sub- Bass unit, not much added bass from the Sub' but it does fill in the bottom end a little. I've seen one builder on the 'net who made Rectangular GRF's and the took out the rear horn and built a ported version from the remaining cabinets. Apologies if I've "thrown a spanner in the works" but I just thought that I would mention the issue. Great that you found a pair of drivers, hope that they didn't cost you a fortune, lots of inflated prices on eBay etc these days!

    WoW ! Those turned out really nice. You did a great job. I have 2 Tannoy 3412 drivers from their i12 pro series. I want to build those cabinets like you .

      Thanks! You may also consider a ported version, particularly if you like deep bass. The horns are a bit light on the bottom end and are a lot of work. There are ported versions on UA-cam. Good luck.

    I have just added sound absorbing panels behind the GRF cabinets where I had alcoves and also to the side walls alongside the cabinets and at the first reflection points on the side walls. This has made a remarkable difference to the quality of the stereo image as well as making the mid frequency bass much more controlled. When complaints are made about the known issues with rectangular GRF cabinets it may be that they can be made to sound good with appropriate room treatment, or at least this seems to be my experience here. I hope this helps those looking at this video who either have rectangular GRF's or are considering them as an option. Of course there is the alternative of reflex cabinets for Tannoy HPD 385's which seem to be successful in some accounts.

      Hello, it is difficult now to personal message on UA-cam, if you know a way this can be done I'd be happy to do this. I don't really want to put my personal contact details on the publicly visible platform. I hope that you understand. I'll answer any questions which are posted in the comments, so feel free to ask, even if you have quite a few, I'm happy to respond. This also may help others who may have similar questions.

    Thank you for the video. Have a pair of them myself but not decided what enclosure to make. There is a similar build clip here in youtube but owner decided at the end to change from horn enclosure to closed baffle because of lack of low end in the horn. What is the low range of your horn? Are you satisfied with the base reproduction? would like to know before I start building baffle or horn. thanks again!

      Thank you for your question, it's an interesting one, I was tempted to alter mine after watching the same video where the horn was converted to a reflex design. The bass is possibly a bit light on mine, so if you were building from scratch the reflex design may be an option although I have never heard the two compared so I am only speculating. I'm happy with mine but I do use a sub bass unit running very lightly, I think that the cabinets on their own sound fine though, I already had the sub and it's really just filling in the very bottom end. I hope that this helps.

      Hello, thanks for your question. I'm not sure where you are, if it's in the UK then "Retrospecialist" may be the place to try : www.retrospecialist.co.uk/all-vintage-wireless-tygan-cloth-30-c.asp I got mine there but I believe that the pattern which I used may be out of stock but you can only ask, they did have lots of others which looked suitable and similar though. Good luck!

      Brother Max Oh, that's a bit more problematic, I'm not sure where you would find some in Australia, although I'm aware that a few people there have built Tannoy cabinets, have you seen this page? www.hilberink.nl/speaker.htm#cabinet there is lots of info on there, I haven't trawled through it you may find some Australian builders on there, I'm not sure if it will give you any answers but it may be of interest. On the other hand I'm sure that "Retrospecialist" could ship to you, they send the cloth in cardboard tubes generally and they are not very heavy, so shipping should not be prohibitive.

      @@morayjames92 Thanks, yes I'm definitely still enjoying them! Running with Single Ended Triode amps (clones of Decware Zen SE84's) which I built after I'd finished the Tannoys. They run to 6W per channel (bridged pair) but that is more than enough. I was using Quad ll's previously but I like the SET amps much more.

    Recently purchased a pair of random speakers off gumtree for $150 which turned out to be 315’s - do you know why the magnet cover labels were half missing? Both of mine are like that too

    • @mostlyoldthings
      @mostlyoldthings  4 роки тому

      You were so lucky! I'll have to search for random speakers and see what comes up🙂. Regarding the labels, I noticed that the label is split between the "Tannoy" logo and the model name, was it perhaps so that different models could be applied but using the same "Tannoy" logo? I had the missing bit on mine, they just weren't shown in the photo's.

    😅😅 have you all only sonic caps for replacement? 250volt types totally overprized!! No jantzen or mundorf

    • @mostlyoldthings
      @mostlyoldthings  10 місяців тому +1

      Hi Thomas
      Good observation. The project is quite old now. At the time I was finding it difficult to source reasonable Capacitors, the Sonicaps were about the only ones which I found. Subsequently, over more recent times, the Jantzen and Mundorf cap's have become more available or at least I have been aware of more places to purchase them! It would be interesting to do a blind ABC test with three sets of crossovers built with the three above mentioned brands and find the best one- obviously not going to happen unless I find a big box of Tannoy crossovers going cheap 😁.

      Hello Stef
      If I have understood you correctly, you are asking for a price for someone to build these for you?
      I'm afraid my cabinets were a one off home made pair, they took a long time and I would not like to have to build another pair as I am not a commercial operation, I hope that you understand why I cannot make them for you. I would suggest that any local carpenter should be able to help with the manufacture of a pair. This would also help with shipping as I guess that you are not in the UK. I'm happy to send you a link to the drawings which I used to make these. The information here should help: www.44bx.com/tannoy/grf.html the drawings are at the bottom of the page. I hope that this will help in some way..... happy to give you more information if required.....

      Try Google and put in "Audio Nostalgia, Tannoy GRF DIY project", UA-cam no longer allows links in comments, so I cant post one here.
      You will note that several people have made GRFs and then converted them to bass reflex. I may have done this also, but it is a lot of work to convert once they are made as horns. The GRFs are not exceptional in the bass, I use a sub' so not really an issue, but you may wish to consider the reflex cabinet over the GRFs in the light of others' experiences. Hope that helps.....
