I'm Colombian, and this movie felt like a beautiful representation of the diversity or my country. Abuela's story was so touching to me because it's based on real violence a lot of families have experienced here.
Not just there… In Puerto Rico we’d have the same type of generational violence but with the slight difference that it’s the Grandfather the one being like instead of the Grandma, but basically the same attitude; being above everyone else and everyone has to do what they say just because🤷🏾♂️
@@Biaso1997 let’s say most of Hispanic America… Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Puerto Rico have gone through this generational trauma and we are all from Central America; so it’s all Hispanic America that went through this, and some still go through it to this day

@@ovyto6267 Central-South America have been through so much violence, but let's remember each country's experience is different from the other and this movie showcases Colombia's. Each country that suffered this can resonate with what Abuela's family and pueblo went through. El Conflicto Armado ha causado muchísimo daño y en este caso estamos hablando de Colombia específicamente.
Its actually very subtle: She didn't get a gift because she was chosen as the next matriarch. That's why she can communicate with Casita, and why the house doesn't come back alive until SHE puts the doorknob in. Or, in other words, her door was the house's FRONT door!
Casita didn’t give her a door because it can’t communicate inside the special rooms. So it kept her in the nursery and then just gave her it’s whole self lol
Anyone can comunicate whit casita not just Mirabel and Alma, if it was like that then they would inmediatly know Mirabel was special and she would not be an outcast. And casita comes back to live because the family is back together not because Mirabel has some kind of house power (also, the front door is more of a family door that a Mirabel door conseidering it literaly has EVERYONE in it and not just Mirabel)
6:15 Mirabel (somewhat) explains in "The Family Madrigal" that her dad Agustin and her uncle Felix do NOT have powers. Abuela doesn't have powers, either, apparently and only those born into the family are given a Gift. Sadly, you can't marry into a Gift or get one after the age of 5, which is the age when all Gifted Madrigals were given theirs at their Gift Ceremony.
I love that Mirabel's whole arc was pretty much just showing that her 'gift' was to be the glue for the family, and take over that almost-matriarchal role from Abuela, right down to being the metaphorical key that re-opened the casita.
The "He can shift?!.." at 4:02 and the "omg and you do the weather?!" after a full on music explaining every single power of the family members its so funny..
I always joke that Mirabels gift is the ability to stay perfectly clean, cause she makes it through so much like isabelas powder paint flowers without a speck of dirt, but as SOON as the miracle is gone, she's dirty
Also, they did hire a choreographer and they performed all the dancing sequences and recorded them to copy them for animation. They even did them without minimal clothing to get the right body movements and then again with the skirts and everything to get the clothing movement
A very interesting detail in the movie is that, when the movie starts and Abuela Alma is telling little Mirabel the origin of the miracle, the image is very tame, Abuela is not crying, she just show sadness in a very child friendly way. But when in the end of the movie we see the actual scene happening its much more violent much more cruel and painful, and we see abuela crying and screaming and falling to her knees in a way you can actually feel her pain.
The butterflies are actually very symbolic throughout the film. The pattern on the "magic" candle is a butterfly. Mirabel's blouse has butterfly patterns stitched across it. Even the romantic song in Spanish that plays over the story of Abuela & Pedro's romance is called "Dos Oruguitas", which means Two Little Caterpillars.... caterpillars becoming butterflies.... it's a whole thing lol
Something that always breaks me it's when abuela apologize to Maribel, but to the 5 years old Maribel. It''s so touching saw her realize all the wrong she did to that little girl.
Lin-Manuel actually wrote Surface Pressure for his older sister. He talked about one Christmas where their parents woke her up early to put together his He-Man playset so he'd be able to play with it when he woke up so this was like a thank you to her
23:46 Isabela, Luisa and Bruno weren't just the people that were struggling I think... Pepa (the weather girl) wasn't abpe to express her own emotion, she can't be upset, sad, angry etc. because the weather will change... so she needs to stay calm and collected everytime...
its not obvious but Camilo was probably struggling too! he was using his gift to help make people happy by changing how he looks a LOT it seems so tiring and like u couldn't be yourself you have to "be" someone else
@@sudsysoap oh yes, so in conclusion... the whole family was struggling but they're too focused on being perfect and helping others, and they really needed to fix their issues...
@@MrQuantitySquare exactly. All of them suffered of Abuela's pressure. What is interesting, it's the fact Isabela told to Mirabel she's always on the way but it's thanks to the middle pillar (the one on the way) if a building can stay still
Let's not forget that Dolores can literally hear everything. That must be overwhelming for her sometimes. Once in a while, she must've wished for peace and quiet.
god forreal. it’s actually embarrassing how many people claimed mirabel was “fat” for a Disney character just because she has a little more roundness to her design. like that’s just a teenage girl with normal body proportions??
This is one of my favorite movies. I am of Dominican and Puerto Rican decent, both sides of grandparents came to the US from other countries and the generational trauma cycle is real. The pressure to be perfect, to be the strong one and so many roles all so that our elders can see that they didn’t travel for a better life for no reason. As the oldest daughter of the oldest daughter, that was definitely me and it was definitely passed down from the pressure my mother grew up under. I cried so many times watching this, I resonated with TOO MUCH! AND BTW!! abuelas do not admit when they are wrong.. EVER! 🤣
Well this is fantasy film, so everything is possible... with a little bit magic ;) Butn yeah, in real life... I think its easier to sell ice to inuits.
23:26 where are these butterflies coming from? The answer is : Mauricio Babilonia from Macondo. " En Macondo yo vuelvo a vivir / in Macondo I live again En mi memoria quemada en el Sol/ in my memory burned by the sun Mariposas Amarillas, Mauricio Babilonia / Yellow butterflies, Mauricio Babilonia mariposas amarillas, que vuelan liberadas / Yellow butterflies, that liberated fly. "
You left out the second most heartbreaking part (besides Abuela's back story): Bruno's vantage point. When we find out what he's been looking out at for the past ten years. That part always wrecks me, even before we find his 'plate'.
19:08 Given that young Abuela looks remarkably similar to Isabela and Abuelo looks a lot like Isabela's suitor Mariano, I don't think this is a coincidence. Abuela's favorite grandchild is Isabela and she wants her to marry Mariano so badly because Abuela wants Isabela to have the perfect marriage and perfect life that Abuela never got to have, because she had to leave her home and her husband was brutally killed in front of her. He sacrificed himself for her and their triplets, as well as the other village people who fled. Because of his sacrifice, Abuela Alma and the Madrigals have the Encanto and their Gifts.
It's not too difficult to even merge their names/titles - "Isabuela" 🤣 The embodiment of everything Mirabel needs to come to terms with, love, be understood by and ultimate mutually-forgive.
i like how the pictures they took show how the family has changed. the first photo is of them being all performative and perfect, but the second one is messy and chaotic but it's still a great photo

This is the first animated movie that shows every hair curl texture! Thanks to the progress over the years of Tangled and Brave as they learned how to animate hair better
Isabela looked like a younger Abuela, so the vision could have been seen as Mirabel hugging her grandmother, and it would still work. Visions are hard to decipher. Fortunately, she hugged both, so it all worked out.
I am brazilian and I feel a little like watching the first scene of RIO with the "brazilian dancing birds" LOL, such cool music in this movie and I loved the girl with the "gossip power" this is so on point LOL. The entire first music have so cool details. We drink strong coffee since we are kids, seems like other latinos do the same. And that little guy is soo cute, I loved him. The part that I think really sad is that they gained a really cool and big house for the family and then they lost it, is so hard to have a house that is yours and of your family, and the mother have a really hard time fighting to protect and car for her children alone. And the people all togheter constructing a new house(like in the beginnng at the community helping each other), just like we face adversities in Latin America, helping each other mainly if you are poor, I cried in this last part.
3:04 well the movie is set in colombia, what is colombia know for? their coffee, everyone of all ages normally drinks it for their breakfast or to have like a little tea time but with coffe to there is a kids song abt it too lol (though i do admit i didnt like coffee very much but most people my age did)
22:23 i love how you point out the butterflies bc the yellow butterflies are a reference to nobel price award winner and famous colombian writter gabriel garcia marquez, in his book "100 años de soledad" yellow butterflies play a really important rol but i wont say much in case anyone wants to read it, the whole encanto film is based on a really famous genre of latinoamerican literature, magical realism gabriel garcia marquez was one of the most influential writters in this genre and he was colombian so i guess thats why disney got inspired by his work.
Excellent reaction! This film literally delivers on how the true magic wasn’t the gifts, but it was literally the love and the support that the family needed to embrace that was the true magic. 🕯🦋💛
Encanto is a charm, but not only literally, it just become a great way to see and feel how colombians and Colombia is: their diversity (and country´s biodiversity), the colors, food, and even feelings and expressions are based 100% in Colombia. A beautiful story, with nice gags and hard scenes too...
Angelina I'm super grateful that after "84 Years" you finally got to react to _Encanto_ It was awesome to watch this on Disney+ on Christmas Eve with my family and although I prefer _Coco_ over this film since I'm Mexican, I still enjoyed the film for the main protagonist Mirabel voiced by Stephanie Beatriz (Rosa in Brooklyn 99), it's unique cast of characters with Dolores and Camilo being the standout and the songs, with my favorites being "We Don't Talk about Bruno" and "Dos Orugitas" which the latter did make me cry. I also did love Mirabel's relationship with each family member especially her relationship with her parents, her sisters, her cousin Antonio, her Abuela, and her Tío Bruno voiced by John Leguizamo. So Angelina from the bottom of my heart thank you so much for reacting to Encanto and I hope you get to react to more Animated movies on your channel.🦋🕯🇨🇴
Mirabel wasn't left out of the family photo, she stayed back. The flowers, candles, and butterflies are a Colombian theme. Author and filmmaker Gabriel Garcia Marquez features these symbols in his novel "One Hundred Years of Solitude " called magical realism.
My pet theory (which is not canon, not borne out by the plot of the film, but I just think is fun) is that Mirabel's gift is the gift of "Musical Theatre." She is the only one who sings by herself, and nobody else sings unless they are in her presence. Okay- so they sing folk songs and play guitars and stuff, but they don't do musical numbers with choreography and scene shifts and stuff: musical theatre magic. It's always- and only- when Mirabel is around. Yet, like classic musical theatre, nobody *acts* like breaking into song and dance is weird in any way; it's simply how a musical universe works. (For Dr. Who fans, it's like The Silence- as soon as they're gone, you forget they were ever there.) So because nobody is aware of how Mirabel's gift is affecting them, they assume that she has no gift at all. Naturally, that's not what the writers intended; her gift-less-ness has different meaning, linking her to her Abuela, and the Casita, etc. But as a musical theatre nerd myself, I still like my theory.
if you know the tv show zoey's extraordinary playlist, this would mean it's kind of like zoey's power in that (though it's not exactly musical theatre because it's more of a jukebox musical). recently saw someone suggest this idea in a tumblr post, aha, and it's def fun to think about. (i do strongly recommend zoey's extraordinary playlist, it's such a fun and creative show)
At 6:12 - I think one of the things you glossed over too quickly is that the Familia Madrigal use their powers to help the rest of the people who joined them in their Encanto when they lost their original home and the candle blessed them with a refuge. Because everyone in the Madrigal family helps everyone in the town with their powers, the town is invested in finding out what the new Madrigal power is going to be.
You definitely brought up a lot of questions about the film that I didn’t think to ask lmao. But I think both the candle and flame are magical.. no idea though Anyway, yes!! Gosh. The amount of detail they added to everything- from the costumes to the sets- is amazing. You can tell the big difference when you compare this to Toy Story 1. To get to you though, I absolutely loved this video. You’re very analytical but also very funny. As always though
There's a theory that Mirabel actually did a gift. If you look at their clothes, their gifts are stitched into their clothes. For instance Isabella had flowers on her dress. If you look at Mirabel's dress, there is the image of a butterfly stitched in it, and the symbol for the miracle is a butterfly. She became the physical embodiment of the miracle
This movie is one of my favorites! My personal favorite characters where always Mirabel and Isabela even though their wasn't much screentime with them til the end!
Apparently it is said that mirabel wasn't given a gift because someone needs to replace the abuela...enter mirabel. Keeping the family together happy and as one. That is mirabels gift/purpose
the way i like to view this movie is that Abuella fail to realize that Mirabel did not get a door because she got the entire house, i mean the house is literally her biggest companion through the movie.
I loved your reaction, spot on. You had me crying again during Abuela’s apology. I like how you pointed out Abuela going down the corridor, aging. Everyone is staring at her, waiting for her approval. Everyone, except Bruno, stands straighter as she passes. He watches her intently, but he seems to me hunched over in fear. It makes him trying to take the blame and shield Mirabel that much more heroic. And how his voice cracks when he says, “I don’t *care* what you think of me,” kills me because he cares so, so much.
What's Harry Potter like is that Mirabel is like a squib in a wizard family cause those are the opposites of Muggle-born you see when a child doesn't produce magic before the age of 7 when their parents or one of their parents are wizards/withes they are automatically called a squib, some squibs are like Argus Filch the care taker of Hogwarts, Arabella Figg (you've seen her in the order of the phoenix), Marius Black and the little brother of Dolores Umbridge.
Hey Angelina. Glad you enjoyed this movie. It's definitely one of my favorites. I suggest watching Soul and Inside Out if you haven't seen them. They are incredibly impactful with deep meanings adults can relate to in a way kids can enjoy it too.
I just want to clear something that a lot of people get wrong, in the family photo scene, i don't think they left Mirabel out, she choose not to go. Cuz abuela call everyone and in Mirabel room she has a picture with her family so it's not like they don't take photos with her. And i don't blame them for not noticing that one member didn't participate in the picture
I was drinking coffee in 6th grade lol it’s a cultural thing my momma drank it in elementary. I don’t anymore (at least the caffenated versions) bc I become reliant on it but yeah :)
14:56 You’re exactly right. They actually hired real choreographers of Colombian decent and they filmed the whole sequence in a dance studio as a reference for the animators at Disney. They even uploaded it here: ua-cam.com/video/uXhUpKqyrco/v-deo.html

about the coffee.. in many hispanic culture stuff, you are like 7 drinking a cup of coffee with coffee bread with the family type shit. so that kid drinking coffee isn't "odd" for hispanics
Minute 22:06, when Abuela Alma made that face (which clearly reflected anger 😡 and dissapointment 😤), I though she was going to say: Shut up, crying girl, and go away! Never come back!
I love this movie, but it's been a couple of months. Last time I watched it was with my grandniece and she made me get up and dance & sing to every song. Was very exhausted by the end.

She is the only one who sings by herself, and nobody else sings unless they are in her presence.
(i do strongly recommend zoey's extraordinary playlist, it's such a fun and creative show)
The moment you said “sand is the worst” I thought of Anakin being a crybaby over sand and there it is 😂😂👌
At 6:12 - I think one of the things you glossed over too quickly is that the Familia Madrigal use their powers to help the rest of the people who joined them in their Encanto when they lost their original home and the candle blessed them with a refuge. Because everyone in the Madrigal family helps everyone in the town with their powers, the town is invested in finding out what the new Madrigal power is going to be.
You definitely brought up a lot of questions about the film that I didn’t think to ask lmao. But I think both the candle and flame are magical.. no idea though
Anyway, yes!!
“She was in hardship and all that jazz”…. “after losing her husband and her family and all that jazz” 😂😂
This movie is so amazing I'm glad u reacted to it
I loved your reaction, spot on.
7:45 god, your editor got me laughing there with the tile drop and the spin away xDDD
"How does animation get any better than this?"
Smiles in Arcane
Technically, she watched Arcane already. Therefore, with that statement, means it’s better than Arcane
@@harol311996:DD
@@harol311996 I wouldn't say it's better, I'd say it's different. imo it's hard to compare those styles because they are _so_ different, yknow?
@@relishin indeed. They were good in their own ways~!
Personally, I think Soul is peak animation. If it wasn’t for the cartoonish proportions of the characters, I could’ve sworn it was live action.
This is the first time I look at this movie 🎥 before
OMG I can't believe you haven't watched encanto before!
All of you is a magic song, like The Circle of Life.
A quality bitter sweet movie representing perks of having a joint family and generational trauma 😅, eagerly waiting for this one Ang💕
I love your intro ending so much🙈 when you cover the screen, feels like you’re hand gagging us to shut up and watch with you🤭🙈🤗
“Summer is coming to a end” you don’t know how much I love to hear that
You got this movie on so many levels! Kudos to you!! Phone cases look beautiful, matches well!
Can’t wait!!!
5:51 fun fact: in Coco, the animators animated a whole bunch of little peach fuzz hairs on Miguel’s face
"Maybe her gift is being in denial"
🔥
Hey Angelina. Glad you enjoyed this movie. It's definitely one of my favorites. I suggest watching Soul and Inside Out if you haven't seen them. They are incredibly impactful with deep meanings adults can relate to in a way kids can enjoy it too.
yes you should've !! its one of my fav
Bruno the best character
I was drinking coffee in 6th grade lol it’s a cultural thing my momma drank it in elementary. I don’t anymore (at least the caffenated versions) bc I become reliant on it but yeah :)
Moments after a big song explaining everyones powers "You can shapeshift? AND YOU CONTROL THE WEATHER?!?"
14:56 You’re exactly right. They actually hired real choreographers of Colombian decent and they filmed the whole sequence in a dance studio as a reference for the animators at Disney. They even uploaded it here: ua-cam.com/video/uXhUpKqyrco/v-deo.html
1:55 I crack up every time Ange does her wind up 😂
Love this movie definitely one of my fav Disney animated movies. So glad that you enjoyed the movie. Love the plants that are on your desk. Could you react to The Sound of Music if you want to? Love all of your videos you do an amazing job!
"Why are you having coffee?" Kids in the area often do.
Seriously I fell in love with this movie before I ever saw it and I'll tell you how I watched several reactors on UA-cam watch it before I saw it so I got to see basically the cliff notes version of this movie and I got to love the music and the story and the family I I just fell for this movie so hard and I was like I've got to see it I've got to see it I've got to see it so I finally ordered the DVD and I watched it a bunch of times I ordered the CD of the soundtrack I even ordered some books that are based on the movie being told through different characters perspectives it's f****** phenomenal and I'm white it's not like I'm a Hispanic girl who's like yes this is my being represented nope
I honestly don't think she watched the entire opening musical
about the coffee.. in many hispanic culture stuff, you are like 7 drinking a cup of coffee with coffee bread with the family type shit. so that kid drinking coffee isn't "odd" for hispanics
If you'll notice, the house always does what Maribel says and helps her out. It doesn't seem to do that with anybody else.
Was very exhausted by the end.
yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh babyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Early Gang Rep!
Nice video. I feel like Pikachu is staring into my soul
I love Encanto too!!!!. Lin-Manuel Miranda did a freaking awesome job with the music. I also love Mirabel and Bruno’s characters.
The plot to this movie is a lot like Piers Anthonys first XANTH novel, 1977s "A Spell For Chameleon".
Closer to the holidays you should react to Klaus- I think it’s still on Netflix… it’s so good
14:48 I was like: what happened to the song? Why does it sound like that? and then I realized it was Angelina singing 😂
I adore Encanto
My first reaction to the title was “You haven’t?!??!?!?
LETS GOOOO!!!
Bruno is the best
Early Gang Rep!!!
The door didn't open to Mirabel prbably because casita was like "Your door is still occupied, wait for abuela to be ded"
The most unrealistic thing in this movie is not hte magic but the matriarch admitting the fault and apologizing 😬
Oh my god Ange I can’t believe you haven’t seen this!!
Early gang!!!
encanto the best animation film since coco 🔥🔥🔥🇲🇽
EARLY GANGGG
lets gooo
Angelina you should watch more moviessss maybe Aladdin or mulan :D
0:58 Meanwhile, here in Australia in November...
i love your reaction videos 🥰
Loved this movie!
