Specifics: This binocular was made in colaboration with Carl Zeiss Jena. The design was approved in 1970 and IOR started taking orders from the romanian army in 1972. The models produces between 1972 and 1978 have tubular style eyecups. The design was based on the Zeiss 7x40 but with smaller prisms for weight reduction. The models made until 1998 have a monolayer magnesium fluroride coating on the lenses. These models even came with coated prisms. Until 1998 Zeiss Jena glass was used which had a strong yellow tint. After 1998 all production went to export except for very few and Schott Glass was used and the strong yellow tint dissapeared. The last models where made in 2018,all for export to the US and a few other countries. These models had T3 multicoating, better rubber and the image was neutral in color.

This binocular was made în colaboration with Carl Zeiss Jena, the design was approved în 1970 and IOR started taking orders from the romanian army în 1972, the models produces between 1972 and 1978 have tubular style eyecups, the design was basesdon the zeiss jena 7x40 but with smaller prisms for weight reduction, the models made until 1998 have a monolayer magnesium fluroride coating on the lenses, on the prism just the two smaller face are coated, i dissasembled one made în 1980 to extract the reticle, i was amazed the prisms where coated, no military binoculars from that era had coatings on prisms, not even the japanese ones, until 1998 zeiss jenă glass was used and they had a strong yellow tint, after 1998 all production went to export except for very few, and schott glass was used, also the strong yellow tint dissapeared, the last models where made în 2018,all for export to the US and a few other countries, i personally called IOR Bucharest and told that the binocular îs no longer în production, the ones after 1998 had T3 multicoating, better rubber and the image was neutral în color, the price of a new one was aproximately 500 euro!

I had never seen a model like this before.
I have another question that you may also be able to answer: If I correctly interpret what you wrote above, the term "IOR Valdada" should refer to binoculars that were exported after 1998 (Valadada Optics is an American distributor). This would mean that the name "IOR Valadada", which is often read with such binoculars, is wrong, unless it would be the models that were made for export (to the US) after 1998. Is this correct?
@@BlackForestRecon Yes you are right, Valdada is a firm set by a romanian emigre named Valentin Leatu and he imported IOR optics for the first time în the US, i dont recommend the models with tubular ocular because i dont like the ocular and are very old, begining of 70s!

You want to read: FM 6-135 Adjustment of Artillery Fire by the Combat Soldier. It shows how the reticle is used on these military binoculars.
You also want to have an M2 Artillery Compass as described in FM 21-26 Map Reading. That will give you the surest fireing solution. It uses 6400 angular mills in a circle, instead of 360 degrees in a circle. The Soviet Union used 6000 units in a circle. Its pretty interesting, you should make sure what the military is using when you use a system, or the shells could end up in a different place. For example: Sweden used 6300 units in a circle.

In your opinion which model would you recommend to get? The Zeiss DF NVA 7x40, the IOR 7x40 or the Yugoslavian 7x40? I need to add this setup to the collection. Thanks and greetings from DK.
Very hard to say.. The yugoslavien ZRAK and the Zeiss DF are nearly the same thing. The ZRAK is quite rare here in Germany compared to the Zeiss DF which is very common and therefore cheaper to get. The Zeiss DF is a very good bino but if you want something to carry around with you I would recommend the IOR. It´s smaller and lighter than the DF and in optics I see no differences..
The all share the same Zeiss Jena Lenses :-)

I recently got a 1975 model of these which seems to not yet have the more ergonomic and recessed rubber eye pieces ( @1:39 ) but instead some tubular funnel styled ones, does anyone know wheter they are changeable (they seem to be held in place by the lense itself) and if yes where one could aquire them?
I own a 1972 version, indeed tubular shaped eye cups. One Alex Burda made them, see his video, and it seems to me that the comfort will be somewhat better...

Greetings and thanks for watching! The orange filter lenses are for poor visibility due to bad weather.
@@BlackForestRecon They aint , they were used as infrared detector lens , they were coated in an isotope that would glow when being hit with infrared , nowdays most are long dead.

@@burneraccount8505 From what I know, just some models have the infrared filter for active sources. Those have a small lever on one side and a small screen that needs to be charged in the sun. The orange lens are for fog, snow (bad weather in general, where you need more contrast).

The binos have Bak4 Porro prisms and lenses that have a T3 Magnesium Fluoride, anti-reflex multi-coat which IOR claims to provide 98% light transmission (review at: www.snipercountry.com/best-rangefinder/).

You have to be careful when you want to buy this model of binoculars because some have a very yellow image.
