Could you provide info about what types of paint, shellac etc you use? Maybe a short video of techniques and tools too would be fun. Your finished ones are lovely and whimsical.
Hi. Just discovered your video. Thanks for sharing. I've been growing and decorating gourds for a couple of years. I'm having a great time growing new types and coming up with new decorating ideas. Seeing others growers techniques and designs really help. Thanks again for sharing.
My dad always grows birdhouse gourds. He makes birdhouses but has never painted them. I’ll show him your video. They are so cute! This year I grew a lot of jack be little and baby boo mini pumpkins, and a variety of small ornamental gourds for fall decorating. I was just thinking I better get mine picked. Here in Minnesota we will be getting 1st frost soon.
Great video! I love the gourd you painted white with the vines on it! You are so talented!!!! I NEVER thought I would say this...I can't wait for winder! I would enjoy watching you do you magic on those gourds. Thank you for sharing your information on how to dry and clean them. God bless you.
I have some gourds that were painted white and decorated like snowmen. Three different ones in graduating sizes and they have little black hats on and red scarves. So cute. I can't wait to see more of your ideas.
Gourds are so fun to grow and design with. I started my 1st birdhouse gourd trellis here this year. I've grown them before but not at our homestead. About time to pick soon. I loved the painted ones! Loufa gourds are fun to. I love making bath salts, sugar scrubs, loufa soap and making gift baskets for family and friends. Excited to see your winter crafts. ❤👍😊
Tina has a lot of talent .. the gourds are really pretty.. I love the stain on the one Tina showed.. the marks really come out in the staining process.. the bird houses were darling.. great job Tina , I can’t wait to see what you come up with in this next bunch ready to do up..
Thanks for the how to on gourds. We grew a lot more this year and were constantly looking at how to harvest and store online. Now we have most of the info on one video. Take care, Rob
Tina really enjoys playing with them... We will try to show more and more as the process moves along... Probably more out there ready to be picked, we just have been swamped here getting ready for winter...
The larger gourds might make good cookie jars! This is my first time growing bird house gourds. I got to find a good space to store them to dry; can hardly wait to start some crafts! Love looking at your craft ideas!
Mark and Tina, that is pretty dang neat to see those gourds. Looking forward to see the upcoming crafts from the next batch of gourds. You guys take care and best wishes
Love hearing your ideas Tina as you feel and see different shades and colors and shapes, bring on winter. How do you wait I'd be busting my buns to play. Thanks for sharing your experience an amazing talent.
I was taught to use bleach water and Dawn dish soap to reduce the mold going into the air. Then they need to set in the sun to dry for 2 days. Your way seems so much easier - definitely going to try it next time. Great harvest and gorgeous gourds. Thanks for sharing. Blessings.
For the most part, we dont mind (and even try to encourage) the mold growth, but you sure do not want that around where you or pets are breathing, for sure...
@@BumbleBeeJunction the mold growth on yours is so much prettier than mine had. I didn't get the pretty rings, just very interesting spots lol the ones we left outside for the winter ended up disintegrating in the spring lots of snow and -35 degrees. I didn't realize they didn't have a chance
Yeah, all winter is rough on them... Odd fact, the sun is closer to the earth during winter (makes no sense, I know) but the winter UV is what really does them in...
@@BumbleBeeJunction yeah, the earth's northern half is tilted away while the southern is closer (such a difference in temps). The UV explains why they looked more like stone. Thanks and thanks for the info... I learned something new today :)
Thanks. I love the step by step and the final birdhouses. Any way you could show a jewelry box done. I can't seem to picture it in my head. I know what I want to plant next spring! Take care and god bless you.
We should be putting together some jewelry boxes this winter... I am not quite sure when Tina will get to them though... I will tell her there has been some interest though....
Thank you, 1st time growing gourds. I planted bowl type and plan on doing wood burning designs on them. Now I want to try different types of gourds to grow!
Tina, this is so much fun. Can't wait to see how many gourds you harvest. How many gourds can one plant put out? Thinking about it for next year. Thanks for sharing.
Great first gourd harvest. I know you have a bunch more that aren’t ready yet. I loved seeing some of your finished ones. They are beautiful. You are very creative. Can’t wait to see you working on them this winter. Great job, Tina. I love your channel. You & Mark do a great job & have a beautiful farm. Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🇨🇱🇺🇸👍😁
What lovely pieces of art you have created Tina. Thank you for taking the time to walk us through the beginning of the process. I am very much looking forward to seeing you work with the gourds this winter.
The markings are amazing! I have some that have the most gorgeous spots . But something ate into them . I have many intact ones with those markings tho 😊
Thats pretty cool all the different things you can make from those gourds. I think my fav is the tealight idea. I can visualize a nice wrap around porch lit up with hanging gourds. I am also interested in seeing this winter how it all is done. Especially what happens to the innards after you start cutting them open. Thanks Mark and Tina.
The insides are mostly powder by now in the dried ones... Just the seeds rattle around in there... Some gourds have a very little internal structure that easily breaks away, but they are more like a pumpkin on the inside, and mostly turn to dust....
Awesome! Great instructions and I watched the vid twice to be sure I got everything. So glad you showed some finished products. And thanks for the add-ins of tips and hints. Guess you use a hole cutter (with mask) for the birdhouse openings but hope to see that in use and the Dremel tool for other cutting. I have my Dremel but am excited to see what bits/tools you use with it. Mark, really appreciate the tip about long stems. My neighbor grew some one year but they all rotted except one. This might be why. So far mostly my Dremel has been used with ceramics and pottery. Can’t wait.
They need some time to finish drying out, but once they do, you can paint them candy apple red, and the stems bright green, and you would think they were giant apples... LOL Thank you so much for watching Jo Jo and for your continued support !
@@BumbleBeeJunction I forgot to ask do the apple gourds climb, will I need a trellis, I usually grow on my chain link fence but did not know if these were climbers.

Great video I will try and grow these again next year. I never have any success but you've inspired me to try again. Do you have to dry them in a dry warm spot?
Not really... You can dry them almost anywhere, including just leaving them in a pile outside... We like to limit the loss so we limit the pressure points (touching) and spread them out... But we will not bring them indoors in the basement until we expect a freeze that could crack them if they are still wet inside...
@@BumbleBeeJunction How many do you expect to produce on one plant? I planted the Jarradale pumpkins for the first time this year and ended up with 14 twenty pound pumpkins from 3 plants. Yes, to both human and animal lungs... They should not be dried around them, and masks should be worn any time you work with them until they are sealed...
