@@Cypeq given that this is such an old comment so it’s not even a problem anymore. Frame size has nothing to do with it but top tube/fork angle. On race bikes it’s pretty normal and nothing to worry about when you go faster. Back then I just wondered in regards to really slow maneuvering in heavy traffic with a bike built for speed. But since I never go slow it’s not a problem 🤷♂️
It’s funny, a bunch of people saying that they shouldn’t encourage people to ride breakless. The first suggestion she said is to use a front break. They then give a demonstration of other techniques. People who have never ridden a fixed gear bike should actually try it to see what it is all about. It literally feels like you and the bike are one entity. I recommend it.
I have found that it is amazingly difficult to slow suddenly by applying backpressure, especially going downhill, that's why my fixies, all have big old centerpulls, bolted to the fork.
I love my fixie, and prefer to ride without using the brake, but I'm never taking the brake off if I'm going to be riding on the road. No matter how skilled you are, unexpected things happen. For example, throwing or breaking your chain. I've never thrown the chain on a fixie, but I have broken one on a geared bike. If you want to ride without brakes, that's your prerogative, just don't take out a pedestrian or another cyclist when you can't make an emergency stop fast enough.
I had a fixie tricycle when I was 1 through 3 years old, then I moved to on to a regular single speed through 7, then mountain bikes until 21, and now I'm back to a fixie.
Thanks for the instructional video! I am new to fixed riding on my recently purchased Specialized Langster. Who said you cannot teach an old dog new tricks? The back foot pressure works great for me, and at reasonable speed does not require a tire skid. When I work my way up to streaming through traffic at high speed; hopefully, it will not require automobile contact to slow me down. We have a number of youngsters, locally, with no brakes, no helmuts; and there have been fatalities. I am sticking to my helmut and keeping the brake, for now, as backup. I would rather be the wimp, and ride respectfully in traffic, than to lose out on being a dad. Most of safe, fixie miles to all.
I got a fixie today, it had no brakes, and I gotta say, the first thing I did was go a shop and get brakes put on. once I learn to properly ride it i might take them off but for now I need actual brakes just in case. I will practise these, they look cool
Fixie vs single speed (SS) is a different type of riding. Why most fixies hate front brakes has to do with the type of riding they have to use to control the bikes speed when slowing, as the video shows to control the rear wheel, either by skipping or by skidding requires the rider to be in the raised off the seat position. That brings the center of gravity (CG) up really high and up near the front wheel. If you add a front brake to that, the high CG up near the front wheel and it now becomes very easy for the front to lock up and over you go. The SS rider can brake front & rear while still still seated, just like any other road bike, which keeps the CG lower and closer to the rear wheel so its more stable. Also in an emergency stop the SS rider can lift off the seat and shift their weight back over the rear wheel while still staying crouched during braking. This gives the rider a greater deal of stability and control than the fixie during an emergency stop. This off seat over the rear technic is also how mountain bikers brake and control their bikes while riding down steep slopes, but it also works for road riding, at least for me. Just my opinion based on my own experiences, your mileage may vary.
you should not encourage people to ride brakeless. Yea its 'cool' or whatever but you dont have to use the brake if you dont want to, and if you are in an emergency situation you will be glad you have a brake. Don't listen to this chick, true "G's" ride a brake so they don't hurt anyone or themselves.
***** Please, stop embarrassing yourselves, you haters. Go and read up. The facts. The experiences of existing riders. They refute many of your claims.
Keep on cycling, Arne Puschmann. :D ***** that's a website set up just to piss on fixies tho. IMHO it's still an opinion thing. The hipsters may make a lot of noise and gain the most attention on the interwebs and all around the streets, but there will always be those that think different. After all, fixies didn't emerge as wannabe tools. Which means it will always have its true fans and real practicality.
i don't know anything about fixies, but if u back pedal to brake, aren't those called coaster brakes/ coaster wheels? and is this what fixies have? and you can technically ride backwards?
I'm converting an old Schwinn I had lying around with a tacoed front tire into a fixed-gear bike. I'm leaving the front brake on. It will be my first fixed-gear bike, and I don't want it to kill me. I'm keeping another Schwinn I got from my brother as it is, and I have yet another Schwinn my parents were going to throw away. It was one of the last to actually be made in Chicago, so I'm restoring that one like it is.
I think the single speed with brakes mode are the way to go for me. The longevity of the tires will pay for those components in the long run. Most FG's come with brakes and freewheel on a flip flop hub anyway.
I hate it that peops like you don't get that "they" are in most cases exactly knowing what Fixies are for and surely have more control over it than 90% of the Fixie-riders, sadly the latter do not get "that". Most Fixie-riders, because that is what they do, they sit on a bunch of metal and ride it, are directly comparable to Scooter-Kids. It is fun to ride a Scooter. It is fun to ride a fixie and for a short tine it is a challenge to learn it but a person that wants to be taken serious has to do sone more - NOT going ego and ignore the rest of the world that you are directly affecting, because you insert something very dangerous (with you on it) into an already non-existent eco-system that barely survives due to subventions from cities and communes that basically allow you to actually gain, even earn from driving your own rustbucket you call car. If you do any of that i do not know - but if you are are a part of "them" you surely know what i described. Do whatever you like as long as you not endanger others without at least warning them in forefront you are an idiot. You - generally spoken - not you ... Y'know?
@@Invisiman I surely did, which should be obvious by what i wrote. Why you ask - do you think a timeless thing like "cycling" requires dates of obsoletion? I personally trust no one that decides about the usability of an answer or opinion based solely on the creation date, but hey .. to anyone its own, right.
first i would like to thank you for the video. 2 i wana ask about something i saw strap around the foot of the man in the video what is that? and how to install it in my bike ? thx for answer .......
Anal beads turning it freewheel just make your bike a big bmx bike. single speed but you can coast and pedal backwards. if you ride freewheel brakes are necessary
Anal beads Nice name. Anyways, the other side will normally be a free wheel meaning you can coast but pedaling backwards won't do anything. I believe what you want is a coaster brake, you get the free wheel effect of coasting but when you push back on the pedals you come to a nice smooth stop normally.
Ignore what you saw in Premium Rush. Skips and skids wear the tires and are not a useful way to control your speed in traffic. If you don't have at least one real brake and your chain drops, you will have almost no stopping power at all except your shoe leather on top of the rear tire or the ground - which is useless at any speed. At the very least, get a front rim brake and ignore it if you want to except when you need it.
I was riding my 1970s custom fixie yesterday ( in my usual jack ass way) racing to a short cut between 2 concrete walls, caught a bit of gravel and hooked on the corner of the wall, I'm fine but holy crapper I totaled my entire bike. I "brake" by a tiny hop and locking the crank with no straps or clips it's easy, and if you instantly peddle backwards.......I call it the 'scooby stop'.lol..Great video thx
Who wants to rely on a "skip stop" when riding in a city? There is no way that is as effective as a brake. You have pedestrians, traffic signals, cars. Who's going to start hopping their back tire when one of those obstacles pops in front of you? "Pardon me, folks... I just need to start hopping on my back tire. Please be patient!" You're not Joesph Gordon Levitt in Premium Rush! I will say these Pure Fix bikes look great and I understand wanting to ride one, but no breaks is nonsense.
I stay in Singapore which has lots of people, traffic, cars and buses. I do skip stop most of the time to stop, it is actually effective, I only skid when there is a car that comes out of nowhere, or else I always do skip stop :), so heres ur answer
I the UK, brakes front and rear by law. I use centre pulls, dead straight rims and very close fitting brake pad alignment making for very efficient braking
As much as i love the look of my cinelli without brakes.. i just can't imagine riding in my city without a front brake. I would probably be dead by now..
Skit Stop doesnt work on my Bike at all🤔 its just to hard to maintain "straight", even though i would consider my legs "strong"... Any tips, maybe changing my gear setting?
with a fixie, you have an additional braking method: backpedaling. Between the front brake, which BTW on road bikes won't throw you if you have a good bike fit, and the backpedaling, you probably don't need any more braking power except in a rare dire emergency, in which case because of the thin tires, two brakes plus backpedaling might be enough to cause the tires to skid anyways, which nullifies the purpose of brakes and backpedaling anyways.
Yeah dude, you're totally right! I forgot our feet and legs are directly connected to the drive train of our vehicles, so it's easy to stop without brakes!
can you upload a video how to skid down the road..because the road in our street is a slope road can you upload a video tutorial how to stop a fixie or slowing on the slope road?..thanks for the answer
Growing up in south Miami many kid's would have bikes with no breaks and what we would do to stop was slide our left foot on the top of the rear tire, where the tire meets the frame and push down while the right foot stayed on the right pedal and it would work, but our left shoe was always worn down!
Does anyone realize that it is illegal not to have a brake on a bicycle. Whenever I see one of those no brake bicycles, it is real clear the person has no concept of the rules of the road. It is a real treat to be a pedestrian and see one of those things coming at you on the sidewalk.
Actually it great depends on WHICH STATE you are in. Most states have laws and regulations on BRAKING DISTANCE not on what kind of brakes you have. WITH YOUR LOGIC, someone could have fully functional brakes that are too week to slow down quick enough. Even if you use teleokinesis to slow your vehicle down that's fine as long as you can slow it down that doesn't matter. It is CLEAR YOU DON'T KNOW THE LAW.
Actually no matter what fixed gear bikes are the only exception. Normal freewheel bikes need a break that will stop you within 5 feet. But it also states that law does not apply to fixed gear bikes
Again that's not really true. You must be able to stop within a reasonable distance. 5 feet is ridiculous and I don't think there is any law anywhere that says 5 feet, just that you must stop, and brakes have nothing to do with a law anywhere, only stopping. Show me a link to a .gov site if u disagree. The bottom line is, don't go so fast on a fixie you can't stop when you need to, otherwise when you get hit by a truck it'll be your problem.
vir ingens I think it's just how you want to ride your bike, I am waiting to get my first fixed gear because I find beautiful their simplicity and minimalism they have. Different style and taste. Regards
Something like 80% of the braking power is in the front brake, because as the weight pitches forward under breaking it rams the ruber into the road. In the dry police motorcyclists are taught to use 90% front 10% rear, and lots of motorcyclists never use the rear brake, except when it's very slippy. I'm scooting about on my bike this afternoon and I can't remember the last time I used the back brake. Racing cyclists used fixed gear bikes to train in the winter, supposedly because it increased "souplesse" - it doesn't! - and it provided a new kind of racing during the winter because people who lacked raw power could sometimes win. My uncle used to talk about a guy who won a time trial by turning a 63 inch gear at 140 rpm the whole way. To get to the punchline - why in the name of God would you want to lock the back wheel on a bike? Is this clip sponsored by the Bicycle Tire Manufacturers of America?
Have not ridden much, but when I was a kid, I had a bike with both front and rear brakes. When I did not know yet which lever was which, I accidentally slammed on the front brake only, which caused the rear tire to jump and I was thrown over the handlebars.
Do the hipster: Buy a fixie, degrade everyone who rides a bike with brakes, crash while being on your 3rd ride, sell fixie, pretend never used to have one
mtb rider here! you don't need those straps or clips to do a skip brake! just scoop up your feet while lifting up with your hips to pull the rear end up!
Adrian Tan Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, it is different for everyone. Some find it fun (me, haha). But as long as you are riding your bike, I respect you because in the end, regardless of which bike we ride, we are doing the same thing. Ride on!
My fixie has a metal flap on the rear wheel like a go cart to stop, just push the pedal down it rubs the tire to stop, got it at a yard sale for sixty bucks and it’s a keeper ! Get ur fix on !
Hey if you want to use your knees past 40 just fit a front brake and stop being a poser. You're probably going too fast for people to be able to see your cables anyway.
Zolo X how much of this video was about stopping on velodromes, chief? I only ask because you're replying to a 6 year old comment and I don't remember. If it's zero percent, like I expect, then your comment is as relevant as it is timely. I'm sure a big-brained fellow such as yourself is fully aware that you use the bank to brake on a velodrome, and you don't really have banks on the road that are reliable enough to use as brakes. Hence recommending to fit an actual brake to ride fixed gear on the road 👍🙄

The question I have is how you guys cope with toe-overlap on a fixed when you have to go very slow around a really tight corner or obstacle
you buy a proper sized bike for you so it doesn't happen lol.
You could just be a smart G and use breaks..
And wear a helmet :)
Yeah you get idea! ;]
What an underrated comment 🤣
Or learn a G-turn.
BRAKES
Boohoo proper bikes are to complicated for my hipster head
Riding a fixie for a year now without brakes in Amsterdam. To my surprise I'm still alive lmao.
Hey, you're in clear violation of the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, article 44.
Not for long
Y NO ES MÁS FACIL PONERLE UNOS FRENITOS?
I have a dream, when one day hipsters will learn that brakes and gears were invented for a reason.
Kleiner Helfer not if you wanna go faster lmao. That’s like saying a city car only needs one gear.
Aren't you the dude from buzz feed ?
B Knapp blablabla
Just got my pure fix today!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I got it a week agooo!!!
are you guys still alive, just wondering
I got a fixie today, it had no brakes, and I gotta say, the first thing I did was go a shop and get brakes put on. once I learn to properly ride it i might take them off but for now I need actual brakes just in case. I will practise these, they look cool
I just love having 30% of total braking power.
Don't listen to this chick, true "G's" ride a brake so they don't hurt anyone or themselves.
how do you stop on a downhill?
I guess you are supossed to jump off your bike and brake with your face on the road...
yeheii I was in that position, not knowing the bike I just got on was in fixed gear mode. Trust me, it should be done on a flat surface first,
ItzKevx Online sorry, got the question wrong. i mean, how do you control your pedalling on a downhill, to avoid such buildup of speed
***** Seems legit.
yeheii Resist on the pedals might be one point.
Yo, is no one gonna talk about the fact that this dude is named "New York"
Why would anyone want a bike with no brakes? I seriously don't get it.
To experience the unexperienced, seriously it's a lot of fun, dangerous too, but tons of fun ;)
because it's look cool without brakes and it have some extreme
dangerous not only for you, but also for others
Having no brakes is useless and dangerous unless it's a BMX...
to be a real G
I feel bad that I skipped 10 seconds when new york was introducing himself
I don't get the hype.. Seems like a step backwards in technology. Oh well to each their own.
fuckin hipster thats what.
It's fun to ride, cheap and easy to maintain. Fixies are not reasonable. I like it though
Arne Puschmann I agree. Much less parts to maintain. Minimalism ftw :P
***** Please, stop embarrassing yourselves, you haters. Go and read up. The facts. The experiences of existing riders. They refute many of your claims.
Keep on cycling, Arne Puschmann. :D
***** that's a website set up just to piss on fixies tho.
Yeah. Flip flop hub is the best way to go. Front brake. Good to go. Have fun.
i love it how 90% of the commenters don't get what fixies are or why people ride them...
Y'know?
@@claudiusraphael9423 did you just comment on a 6 year old comment?
@@Invisiman I surely did, which should be obvious by what i wrote. Why you ask - do you think a timeless thing like "cycling" requires dates of obsoletion? I personally trust no one that decides about the usability of an answer or opinion based solely on the creation date, but hey .. to anyone its own, right.
This chick doesn't know what it feels to go at 50kmh in downtown and try to stop like she shows..
you ride a single speed at 50 kmph ?
first i would like to thank you for the video. 2 i wana ask about something i saw strap around the foot of the man in the video what is that? and how to install it in my bike ? thx for answer .......
So, this may be a stupid question but when you flip the cog to enable coasting can you still pedal backwards to brake?
No, its freewheel
***** No need to be a cock
Anal beads turning it freewheel just make your bike a big bmx bike. single speed but you can coast and pedal backwards. if you ride freewheel brakes are necessary
Anal beads Nice name. Anyways, the other side will normally be a free wheel meaning you can coast but pedaling backwards won't do anything. I believe what you want is a coaster brake, you get the free wheel effect of coasting but when you push back on the pedals you come to a nice smooth stop normally.
Whats the #1 question ppl ask about fixed gears??? WHYYY?
Ignore what you saw in Premium Rush. Skips and skids wear the tires and are not a useful way to control your speed in traffic. If you don't have at least one real brake and your chain drops, you will have almost no stopping power at all except your shoe leather on top of the rear tire or the ground - which is useless at any speed. At the very least, get a front rim brake and ignore it if you want to except when you need it.
This is very true other than my comment it is the most legit point I've seen in these comments.
it wasnt a documentary???
What if your chain breaks, or what if you need to make an emergency stop? These things are hipster death traps
you could jump off although if your chain breaks and gets caught up somewhere your screwed
Kevin P If the chain breaks it doesn’t pedal therefore you quickly lose speed buddy
James Too
If the chain breaks it's gonna start coasting because there's no chain resistance, nigga. Physics, learn that shit.
I just my Fixie today I'm finding it really hard to stop my bike do I need Strap/Cleats to make it stop faster?
I was riding my 1970s custom fixie yesterday ( in my usual jack ass way) racing to a short cut between 2 concrete walls, caught a bit of gravel and hooked on the corner of the wall, I'm fine but holy crapper I totaled my entire bike.
I "brake" by a tiny hop and locking the crank with no straps or clips it's easy, and if you instantly peddle backwards.......I call it the 'scooby stop'.lol..Great video thx
Every bike needs a real Brake. Stop your bike by skidding or something else is not very practically. In everyday use you need a brake.
+Daddl D skiding is just for show and coolness whatever; you mostly slowdown by slowing down pedals very simple
ah, ok. :-) Thanks!
ua-cam.com/video/L1srjjZ8Vo4/v-deo.html Look at These Guy ^^
Unicycles are also fixed lol and so much fun
Indeed they are
Who wants to rely on a "skip stop" when riding in a city? There is no way that is as effective as a brake.
You have pedestrians, traffic signals, cars. Who's going to start hopping their back tire when one of those obstacles pops in front of you? "Pardon me, folks... I just need to start hopping on my back tire. Please be patient!"
You're not Joesph Gordon Levitt in Premium Rush!
I will say these Pure Fix bikes look great and I understand wanting to ride one, but no breaks is nonsense.
I almost always skip stop and is easy af, you can reduce your speed considerably in a second, if you need to stop as emergency you can skid
Can I mount a cantilever brake system on to espresso fixie wheels??
why would you ride withour brakes, what if your chian brakes
your fucked
*chain breaks
*without
As much as i love the look of my cinelli without brakes.. i just can't imagine riding in my city without a front brake. I would probably be dead by now..
This woman is painstakingly hot. Who is she? She pulls off that Sandra Bullock look incredibly.
+John Lamb Everyone is worried about brakes or no brakes, but you, my friend, asked the right question: who is she? I would like to know as well!
+Carlo Foles +1
Sandra Bullock... Hmmmm... Yeah... I can see the Sandra Bullock aura about her.
amanda
John Lamb she‘s „Chicago“
Skit Stop doesnt work on my Bike at all🤔 its just to hard to maintain "straight", even though i would consider my legs "strong"... Any tips, maybe changing my gear setting?
Love the look of the all white...thanks for the video!
To perform two of the “stops” you need to get up to speed. Sounds counterintuitive to me
Why not install a rear brake.
with a fixie, you have an additional braking method: backpedaling.
You don't need straps to do any of them
🧢
Hi , I got an sole fixie bike, I want it to know if there's any other better fork for my bike because I feel it to heavy on the front of my bike
...why would you remove your brakes?
Evan McCausland it's fun
some people do it to do some tricks.. the break wire would get in the way
BS you can position the break wire wherever
does anybody know who sings the intro?
also, don't ever use the word 'real G'.
delonge5000 intro song is Hello Self by TRMRS. Shazam saved me
Hey, lets make a car without brakes. Lets make a train without brakes! Every gramm counts!
Minimalism is super!
Yeah dude, you're totally right! I forgot our feet and legs are directly connected to the drive train of our vehicles, so it's easy to stop without brakes!
Jacob Sever Fred Flintstone ftw :D
ochgottnochma Lets make a plane without brakes.
Planes don't have brakes?
ArabOnARocketCamel You're right, they stop with magic
can you upload a video how to skid down the road..because the road in our street is a slope road can you upload a video tutorial how to stop a fixie or slowing on the slope road?..thanks for the answer
You Really told em ken!!
It is our problem so just don't ride fixed simple as that.
I've ridden past plenty of cops and never got stopped. ever.
"I'm new York" yeah well I'm California!!!
WTF?????!!!! SKIP STOP!!??? Yeah, try that when a truck suddenly backs out its drive way right in your path:/
Dumfuck
dont talk about ur mom like that bro
vir ingens I think it's just how you want to ride your bike, I am waiting to get my first fixed gear because I find beautiful their simplicity and minimalism they have. Different style and taste. Regards
what about the wheels? do they some special kinda profile? the thicker the wheel, the harder it is to skid, am i right?
Is this clip sponsored by the Bicycle Tire Manufacturers of America?
but murica
ps cops cant ride for shit, gayboys on harleys ahah
i feel like this bike would just eat ur tires away in no time
nice name man
I never want to stop!
I know how to skip stop, but how do I prevent my back tire from moving to side? (i.e to the left)
the reason it moves to the side is bc you shift your hips to that side, if it happens again just line up and continue peddling and youll be good
Have not ridden much, but when I was a kid, I had a bike with both front and rear brakes. When I did not know yet which lever was which, I accidentally slammed on the front brake only, which caused the rear tire to jump and I was thrown over the handlebars.
Do the hipster:
Buy a fixie, degrade everyone who rides a bike with brakes, crash while being on your 3rd ride, sell fixie, pretend never used to have one
How to stop a Fixie? Crash it into a brick wall. Then throw that garbage away and get a proper bicycle. The hostess of this video is cute, though.
and please dont wear a helmet while performing the above, they are as cool as brakes, gears, and freewheel
Looks like a proper bike to me.
ProfessionalDad I use a full face helmet. conventional cycle helmets are insufficient protection.
smithraymond09029 she looks like a 37 yr old posing as a 23 yr old..ugly and wanting to be trendy
His name is "New York?" Really?
those muse be some good chaines ive snapped chaines bfore and how do you corner ?
mtb rider here! you don't need those straps or clips to do a skip brake! just scoop up your feet while lifting up with your hips to pull the rear end up!
All of the 3 ways basically ruin your back tires. Might as well just get brakes! lol
Buy some good shimano brakes. That's how you can stop properly and avoid an accident!!!
1. Throw fixie into Dumpster.
2. Go take the public bus.
3. If not , get a road bike with brakes.
Or put brakes on your fixie dipshit
Steven Bowman Then what's the point of the fixed wheel?
+Adrian Tan Fixed gear is fun with or without brakes. It is a whole new experience.
***** Yea I've tried fixed gear bikes before..... but riding a fixed bikes on the road isn't fun :/
I am thinking of getting a fix but I will be new to it. Was thinking of breaks as I will be new to it. And I have. Knee problem
Hey if you want to use your knees past 40 just fit a front brake and stop being a poser. You're probably going too fast for people to be able to see your cables anyway.
Yes let me fit my track bike with a brake which is illegal on a velodrome, its big brain time
Zolo X how much of this video was about stopping on velodromes, chief? I only ask because you're replying to a 6 year old comment and I don't remember. If it's zero percent, like I expect, then your comment is as relevant as it is timely. I'm sure a big-brained fellow such as yourself is fully aware that you use the bank to brake on a velodrome, and you don't really have banks on the road that are reliable enough to use as brakes. Hence recommending to fit an actual brake to ride fixed gear on the road 👍🙄
@@jaspertandy oh my god six years later and you still got his ass. Fcking respect man
