I have studied several languages, gotten pretty good with a couple. These gentlemen speak the language learning truth. Effective language learning takes a lot of work. Every language has grammar. Want to be good with the language? Do the work to learn grammar. Don't want to bother wirh grammar? Congratulations, you just created your own pidgin. If you want to participate in the language, you must increase your vocabulary. Get started on that 10,000 hours. Want to speak fluently? You'll memorize a lot of dialogs.

gideon i started in 1974 and am still doing lessons, so i can claim 50 years of experience 😀i always say the best way to learn a language is to go to bed with it 😉😉
That's impressive. It goes to show that you never "finish" learning a language. There is no destination, it's all about the journey.

About Ben tip nr.2: to me it's more intimidating reading newspaper articles than books. Mostly because they don't follow normal conversation rules but they try to be concise and catchy, hence using vocabulary and structures that are not commonly used on a daily basis

I’m learning Portuguese while living in Portugal. I avoid expat communities and study my grammar every day. Metacognitive strategies are very useful.

In line with my own learning and teaching experience, it helps a lot to have clear notions on how the language "works". "Our" Indoeuropean languages have a lot in common: basic aspects such as modal verbs require a infinitive structures, simple verb forms are used to express facts, general states and habits, the countable and uncountable concept, etc. A number of basic mistakes are often illogical, mistakes that you wouldn't make in your own language. The better the awareness on these, the faster advance my students in terms of correctness in grammar and structures. In terms of vocabulary expansion I consider a range of basic adverbs, adjectives and verbs of crucial importance. Reading and listening practice helps a lot.

My Tip : If you are working on expanding your vocabulary, prioritize first on *verbs* and *grammaticals,* then on _common_ *adjectives* and *adverbs,* then _common_ *nouns,* and put colors and shapes _last_ in priority. With children we often prioritize teaching colors and shapes over everything else, for some odd reason, when we do not really use them often in everyday speech, and we get biased into thinking we should start with them when we should not; colors are the least of your concern. You can often describe things with other common adjectives and get your meaning across, even when you don't know what the name of a noun is. But verbs are the heart of all sentences, and the grammaticals glue it all together, even when you don't have the correct adjectives, nouns, or colors to describe your intentions.
I felt relief in this video, we really received a lot of information, this affects our learning, at the moment I'm humble, I'm putting together short sentences, reading small snippets of news, I'm no spring chicken anymore, many years trying to become fluency. .. I don't give up.. Congrats Gideon and Ben.. Thanks a million 🤩💝

With love for languages and curiosity and challenge also InThat is How I have been learning English with linguistic affection I must say how I started learning English personally and with enthusiam it was by watching Hardy series and reading his novels afterwards ...it was like moving Victorian England....
To Learn English, one should enter a linguistic university or something 😊
To Acquire English, one should be respectful to oneself 💯

Great video! I think AI can add to our journey in becoming more fluent. For example, when I use ChatGPT to give me a brief summary of a topic I'm interested in. You can ask for short assessment of your written English skills. Or to point out any mistakes you made. This way you can more easily identify areas that maybe need improvement. (Like grammar 😅) AI can be a good assistant, but it doesn't replace a teacher or conversation partner.
I am currently stuck on the intermediate plateau. But I'm willing to use any means to overcome it. Thank you for helping us along on our way.

I want follow up on making mistakes. "Mistakes" are part of any learing process and our attutude to them is crucial in the learning just about anything. I always try to use the phrase 'learning opportunity' when talking about errors. Every time a mistake comes up, that's a chance to learn something new. Not an excuse for beating yourself up about how useless you are. However, I still struggle sometimes in deciding how to balance accuracy and fluency. I don't want a learner to produce tons of badly thought out nonsense, but likewise I don't want severely inhibited speakers and writers either. I'd welcome your, or anyone's thoughts on striking the right balance.
I would add one tip that kind of joins up with what you guys have said about finding a reason to use the language: I would highly recommend finding a language partner who doesn’t speak your native language (which is fairly easy nowadays thanks to social media 😉). Someone who has got similar interests to you and with whom you could build a friendship and message on daily basis using your target language, to talk about a large range of topics. It has helped me loads with my English!

That's absolutely a great tip to find a language partner. I've made use of that myself. I'll mention it in part deux. As for your cryptic riddle I'm afraid I can't guess the answer.

Uselful tips though, there's a vedio abt language learning by " Norwegian with Ilys ", she has some great tips as well.
"Modern" language teaching is too much focused on passing exams rather than speaking (those C1, B3, A-watever...). I would call it examinosis.
Btw, writing is absolutely unnecessary nowadays, with the Daddy AI in town, however, as an English Tutor, I specifically DM my students in English to enhance their grasp of texting messages 😊
So, it is basically teaching not writing but *typing* 😂
Writing is more necessary than ever. I now receive CVs with cover letters clearly written by AI. The ones written by humans stand out.

The Internet is the Only Comrade that really helps you out. It's only because I have access to it that I'm acquiring Serbian, Bulgarian, Turkish, Chinese, Polish, and Vietnamese + German and French
If a person gets frustrated over some problems, it's psycological issues not Linguistic ones 💪💪💪

Read many books on different subjects and topics. Read 3 hours a day at least. And listen to the intelligent people whose language is rich and grammatically correct. Through this ordeal you will learn English. It will take you 5 years at least if you read and listen every day. Be patient. There is no other way. Believe me.
Well teacher , maybe now it doesn’t seem a good advice say to someone move to the anglos countries but in fact it’s a good advice say to someone who want to learn english language move to the anglos countries because the anglos people are whom speak best english language because it’s their mother language and as we are non english speakers or our countries are not countries in where english is a common language, maybe you won’t find someone with who practice our knowings of english language
