    Damn, Jordan was THE most popular athlete in the world during his playing days. Every great athlete right now, from virtually every sport, grew up watching Michael Jordan.

    • @XDahAznManX
      @XDahAznManX 10 років тому +60

      I mean, in America. I came from Asia and I had literally no idea who Michael Jordan was, or any basketball player until my friends talked about them. Mind you I wasn't poor and I did have a television and a computer, but really basketball is almost irrelevant in other countries.

    • @CrimsonUniverse22
      @CrimsonUniverse22 10 років тому +42

      Hoang Nguyen I find that hard to believe. The people who LITERALLY have no clue who Jordan is, usually do not associate with any sport whatsoever, never picked up a ball, never participated in any sports, etc. I spent the first 11 years of my life overseas, five in Japan, six in Bangkok. These are not basketball dominated countries at the least, it was soccer and baseball (Japan). Still, virtually everyone I knew at least HEARD of the name Michael Jordan. Virtually everyone I knew, didn't know certain things like the team he played for, the sport he played, heck, a few people I knew thought he was a white guy. But the NAME was popular, and most if not all people had an idea that the athlete Michael Jordan was a significant figure in sports.
      Jordan also has marketing. Anyone who has been to a shoe store, has seen the Air Jordan symbol at some point in their lives. People who haven't, don't have the money to go to a shoe store.
      Of course, not EVERYONE knows who he is. There are millions of people out there who simply do not watch sports. If you go on google, and search for most popular athletes of all time, Jordan will be #1 virtually all the time. That's not by accident.

    • @njsfer
      @njsfer 10 років тому +19

      Absolutely. I'm from Portugal where basketball isn't and never was very popular (football=soccer, athletics, cycling, roller hockey were more popular) but instead the greatest sportsman at that time (and arguably, all time) was Michael Jordan. I watched NBA Live every saturday morning only to watch Jordan play in the 90's. After he quit i never watched NBA again. Without Jordan's magic the game is not the same. I know that there are/were other great players like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett... but it isn't the same thing.
      I'm 30 and without a doubt Jordan was my reference in sports when i was a kid and basketball wasn't even my favorite player.
      It seems that he was also a reference for Roger as it was to so many legends that played totally different sports.
      Just like brazilian "soccer" legend Ronaldinho Gaúcho. Watch it: watch?v=vlYigV0wdXM

    • @CrimsonUniverse22
      @CrimsonUniverse22 9 років тому +12

      ***** Jordan was popular here? Where is "here?" America? If you mean America, heck no, Jordan was way more popular in America than Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras. Is that a joke? Jordan was THE most popular athlete in the late 80's and most of the 90's in America, that's not a debate. Now, Diego Maradona and Jordan were both extremely popular worldwide in the 80's and 90's. Jordan had the marketing and brand advantage, it's speculation as to which one as actually the more popular one.

    Roger Federer might be the most famous athlete alive now. He’s achieved almost everything possible in sport and he’s widely renowned as the GOAT and even HE is a fan boy when talking to MJ.
    That’s the power that MJ has. He’s just something else man.

    • @Ky-fm8ho
      @Ky-fm8ho 4 роки тому

      As for the most famous athletes, I will go with Cr7 and Messi. And as for his GOAT status, Novak and Rafa have a good deal of say at it. So your statement isn't actually right

    • @eaglewinnings8003
      @eaglewinnings8003 4 роки тому

      @kami yann You can “go with” whatever you want. Your opinion means nothing.
      The fact of the matter is that Federer’s popularity globally is right there w/ Messi & Ronaldo if just bc of the fact that he’s almost a half decade older than them and has been doing it longer.
      As far as tennis goes the fact that Federer is 5-6 years older than Djokovic and Nadal and is still able to hold his own against them (has won 6 of the last 7 meetings against Nadal and actually has a winning record against Nadal away from clay) speaks for itself.
      Thanks for trolling.

    To the guys saying that Jordan is greater and in the discussion for GOAT's athletes and sportsmen, while Federer is not, riddle me this... How can you even compare an athlete like Federer, coming from a little country, dominating and excelling in a GLOBAL and INDIVIDUAL sport like tennis for more than 15 years, destroying every possible record, with Michael Jordan, wich as great and famous as he is, excelled in a DOMESTIC and TEAM sport, with all the USA's hype machine behind him... We can argue about who's more famous maybe, but Federer IS the sportman, and very possibly the best of them all, ever...

      i don't find your points very relevant either, very superficial completely missing the context, i mean everyone can find his own stupid philosophy why one player is better then the other and make arguments that make sense only to him...coming from a little country? what better country in the world would be suitable to come from to play a sport like tennis professionally then switzerland? especially if you are from a rich family... MJ couldn't even afford to play tennis to begin with lol...Federer had all the tools, talent, facilities, coaches, money, support, only thing they were all afraid about was his temper that usually got the best of him when he was younger. Many other players had a much more difficult path to success, coming from central/eastern european countries or asia, most were praying for a chance to go to live and train to switzerland/germany/spain or usa, just so they can keep their dreams alive....
      not to even talk about how tough nba was back in the 80's and 90's, defense was so fucking hardcore it is not even comparable to now, every match you had to be ready to rumble, he knew he was to get hit all the time, players were on a mission to hurt him (Pistons team for example). It took MJ time to mature and toughen up then achieve his full potential, whilst with Roger, everyone knew he was a prodigy as a teenager already. I wouldn't say MJ had it easier by any means...
