I was definitely wondering what was going on...perhaps even significant outside stress with illness in his family, a recent death, etc.. You know, I've always been a fan of Ivanchuk, & this expression of emotion causes me to like him & admire him even more because it is totally clear just how passionate he is about this great game, how much he loves it, & how important it is for him to do well & still compete at a high level. When others his age have retired or play more for fun, he still seems to give it his all & really care. I hate it when people discount older competitors in any sport/game.

Indeed! Players like Ivanchuk, Anand, Korchnoi, and Smyslov show us that its possible to perform at a very high level despite age. In other sports I can think of Elliot Kipchoge setting marathon records in 40s and George Foreman winning the heavyweight boxing match in his 40s. Human potential truly knows no bounds!

Cameras are allowed here and companies like chessbase india have already gotten permission from the tournament organizers to record whatever games they want live. This includes any emotions or gestures expressed by the players. It's the entire point. I disagree with you that this makes ivanchuk look bad. If anything I have more respect for him seeing just how much he's passionate for the game.

Most horrifying chess video I have seen. Ivanchuk is such a legend, and honestly the guy needs a hug. Man has got nothing to prove, he will be considered among the top 10 chess players of all time. The final time scramble with Naroditsky and Ivanchuk blitzing out moves with their whole body is an image I'll not soon forget. Class act by Danya not to try to celebrate, and just calmly walk away.

To be fair & to make you feel better, Ivanchuk has always been EXACTLY like this (top players are on record 20 years ago saying Ivanchuk is a highly emotional player which causes him to perform badly in critical moments), so I doubt he’s crying because he’s getting too old or whatever people think - he’s a bit of an eccentric ‘romantic’ type, which is why he’s so interesting. He is known to wear his heart on his sleeve, and isn’t embarrassed by it. I think every top player has felt exactly like this when they lost, probably even Danya after he lost the rapid world championship just a few days ago after being the sole lead, it’s just that Chuck is less concerned what others are thinking.
Hikaru had a similar moment against Magnus I believe. This happened many years ago. You can find the video on youtube. In fact, Hikaru also gave a very emotional commentary/interview in his own stream after losing a recent event - I think the Candidates but not sure. Some people have chess in their blood. Respect.

Naroditsky is good, may be like top 30-50 good, but not 'one of the best'. Promoting Queen b8 would leave Ivanchuk chances to win this one, but move he made when ran out of time Rg4+ loses it.

Do not get misled by his white hair. He is only 55 years old. But yes, he is still very good for his age. Vishwanath Anand is only about nine months younger than him and he still features in the list of top 10 players in the FIDE classical ratings. They are legends, both of them.

He is almost certainly crying because of the realization that he is becoming old and that his cognitive capabilities are decreasing (an inevitable consequence of the second law of thermodynamics that will happen to all of us) and that there is no cure nor even a prevention for its worsening. Maybe for someone who lives a mentally passive life, the cognitive declines that come with age strike them as less psychologically devastating than the physical ones, but imagine those like Ivanchuck who dedicate their lives and build their entire self worth around activities where you need to think presciently and quickly; he was in a winning position here but lost because of time, and he had lost to other opponents because of the time in this tournament too. This particular game knocked him out of advancement. This is as psychologically devastating as an athlete getting a career ending injury in Father Time. The pain he feels is amplified further by the fact that he was world number 2 in his prime and that if he had the mental speed he had then he would steamroll this opponent.
Ivanchuk's play after Bd4 to survive and prove the advantage is incredible. At 9:36 putting the rook on f1 and then sacking it on f3 to promote the pawn is so hard to find in a time scramble like that.

He contributed a humanity and relaxed nature that was sorely needed in professional chess with his whimsy and jokes. Truly one of the most naturally gifted ever. He could retire tomorrow and still be considered among the greats. Few players with a career as long as his could still keep up with the worlds elite. Now, it brings tears again-this time, as a younger player outmatches you. Yet, the love for the game remains, and the child within you is still there-it’s just grown older.

Ivanchuk had 7/10 going into round 11, and to get into the next round you needed a 9 out of 13, meaning he would have had to get 2 points out of the next three rounds, so a win plus two draws or two more wins would have done it, albeit against strong opposition. Doable but not easy.
Hard to see him sobbing like this without sobbing myself. Do not worry Ivanchuk, ageing slows us all down. Besides, people know and won't forget how dangerous of a chess player you were in your prime.
He has already been a rapid and blitz world champion in 2007 and 2016 respectively. I initially thought that he might be upset that he'd never be a world champion but that's not the case.

Do not get misled by his white hair. He is only 55 years old. But yes, he is still very good for his age. Vishwanath Anand is only about nine months younger than him and he still features in the list of top 10 players in the FIDE classical ratings. They are legends, both of them.

He is almost certainly crying because of the realization that he is becoming old and that his cognitive capabilities are decreasing (an inevitable consequence of the second law of thermodynamics that will happen to all of us) and that there is no cure nor even a prevention for its worsening. Maybe for someone who lives a mentally passive life, the cognitive declines that come with age strike them as less psychologically devastating than the physical ones, but imagine those like Ivanchuck who dedicate their lives and build their entire self worth around activities where you need to think presciently and quickly; he was in a winning position here but lost because of time, and he had lost to other opponents because of the time in this tournament too. This particular game knocked him out of advancement. This is as psychologically devastating as an athlete getting a career ending injury in Father Time.
The pain he feels is amplified further by the fact that he was world number 2 in his prime and that if he had the mental speed he had then he would steamroll this opponent.

Ivanchuk's play after Bd4 to survive and prove the advantage is incredible. At 9:36 putting the rook on f1 and then sacking it on f3 to promote the pawn is so hard to find in a time scramble like that.

Ivanchuk will forever be a legend. Immortalized for creativity and his cunning attacks over the board. He contributed a humanity and relaxed nature that was sorely needed in professional chess with his whimsy and jokes.
Truly one of the most naturally gifted ever. He could retire tomorrow and still be considered among the greats. Few players with a career as long as his could still keep up with the worlds elite.
I hope Chucky realizes he's cemented himself as a legend and has nothing to prove.

Once a man, twice a child. The game of chess you loved as a child once brought you to tears when an older opponent defeated you. Now, it brings tears again-this time, as a younger player outmatches you. Yet, the love for the game remains, and the child within you is still there-it’s just grown older.

Ivanchuk was doing so well until round 11.
He probably knows it is very unlikely he will have another chance like this.
Ivanchuk had 7/10 going into round 11, and to get into the next round you needed a 9 out of 13, meaning he would have had to get 2 points out of the next three rounds, so a win plus two draws or two more wins would have done it, albeit against strong opposition. Doable but not easy.
Hard to see him sobbing like this without sobbing myself. Do not worry Ivanchuk, ageing slows us all down. Besides, people know and won't forget how dangerous of a chess player you were in your prime.
He has already been a rapid and blitz world champion in 2007 and 2016 respectively.
I initially thought that he might be upset that he'd never be a world champion but that's not the case.
