- Theresa, from My Fix It Up Life, shows you how to replace a balance on your double hung window.
This is a little more difficult fix, but if you have some home improvement experience you should be able to do it yourself. We do recommend watching this video all the way through before you begin.

Thank you! I used your video to simply replace a sash that had been compromised due to uv. I received a replacement sash from Simonton but had no instructions for installation. The original installer (Window World) was on no help and required a service charge to do the install. Using your video, I made the exchange in just a few minutes and saved the expense.
Much appreciateD!
Easiest and best explanation of how to do this. Makes it very, very, simple. THANK YOU!
I don’t even have any windows - I’m a hermit living in a cave - and I keep coming back to watch Theresa
Perfect video to also help me troubleshoot how to correctly re-install the bottom sash after major window cleaning-painting effort. Saved me many $$$$ by not having to call in a carpenter. THANKS!!
I actually only came here to see how these things work as the alignment of my track was off. Super helpful and the issue seems to have been fixed!
Oh, Simonton. You have my business for life.... Just keep making these Teresa videos....
That's actually "Theresa."
Easy to follow complete instructions. Thank you.
Thank you! Made the call, received the parts and followed your lead. Good as new! Both sides!
Very helpful video. Where can I get a pair of those jam spreaders if I don't have Simonton windows?
Theresa. Thank you so much for a clear and easy explanation. I fixes my window myself for six dollars.
Your Awesome!! Easy to follow instructions.
Thanks Pertty!!!
Thank you very much for this great video
Hi Theresa, please tell me where I can purchase those plastic jamb spreaders that you are using in this video. Thank you Galen
I have 19 Simonton windows in my home that is 16 years old. 15 of them have broken balance spring. Do you have a video on them, there are single hung, single pane aluminum frame windows or where I can get parts.
Where can I buy spiral tilt balance pivot shoe? Can you give me a website link?
Where can you buy the jamb spreaders. I already have the balance spring and shoe.
Yes, same if you find some let me know!
I ended up using the heatgun method. Heat the vinyl channel until it becomes soft. Pull the channel open with gloves on. Pull the old balance spring out and put the new one in. Then reheat with the heatgun and mine returned to its original shape. You can not tell you even touched it.
@@dalepauly3617 thanks!
Awesome video!
The springs in my windows look as though they have snapped. I can't tell because the window will not come out and I can only see the top of the shoe and the coil spring is snapped at that point. I release the window and tilt it down but cannot lift either side to get it out ???
My coil balance are broken I need those coils where can I buy
We’re can i get those coils or buy
Great video, but where do you find the replacement part? I tried the
Simonton Web-site, even registered and they only show contractors to
replace or repair for you, no parts...
I had to call them up, give them the order number off of the window and then they'll ship it to you.
My jamb does not have an opening as you have in the video and the balance is not the same at all. I can't find a video that shows the same design as my window. How do I remove it without that opening. There is a plastic insert at the top of the track but is seems to be permanently in place, can't remove it. The window is only about 6 years old.
My plastic double hung windows have cord inside. I can't get the window down the last 4"
You're beautiful and talented, appreciate everything and well done.Loved the way you did it.Thanks
Loved it, very easy to understand. Thanks a lot :)
Where do I get the replacement parts. I’ve been on the simonton window web site and can’t find hou to order the set
At the beginning, Theresa mentions 2 other places to find the window number (our sticker at the top is gone)...where are those places? Great to have that as text on the video or in the description just above this comment.
One is on the side of the window itself. Not sure on the other.
I called Simonton per the video & they would not send me the part unless I filed a warranty claim. I'm sure my windows are no longer under warranty, though they were at the time the balance broke. At that time I was told I would have to work with the contractor that installed the windows to get the replacement part. I didn't have a good experience with my contractor & have instead opted to live with a broken window for many years. I tried calling them again today & received the same answer. Did those that received the part from Simonton have to file a warranty claim? I'd gladly pay for the part & shipping. Very frustrating.
From the looks of these comments, Simonton does not make it easy to get parts for their windows and the people in the video don't respond much, either. I had the same experience (broken balance and balance shoes) with American Craftsman windows. I called them and they sent me the needed parts free of charge. It appears by making this request for parts they opened a warranty claim on their end. That was about 3 years ago. The window parts broke about 10 years in but I didn't bother to fool with it at the time. I bought the windows about 15 years ago. Just recently, another part broke (balancer) so I contacted them. Again, they are sending me the part under the warranty. I asked them and am still waiting for a response, what is the length of the warranty. I know this is a year after your comment and you had no responses from anyone. Hope you got the resolution you were looking for.
looks like my horizontal window is actually a vertical window, if I remove those 2 springs it will be easy to close
I think the video is working great. 2 Issues:
1) Does it matter which side (inside/outside) the spring is on?
2) You forgot to mention that the jam spreaders will pop out of the window frame when removing and 99% of the time will fall outdoors so you have to go out and around the house to get it back to do the other side.
Why someone unlike that video? May be they are Jealous .
Do the other sash the same way
Thanks. However, simonton didnt sent a 'new balance assy'. just a bag of disassembled parts that i had to figure out how to assemble. I got it done but never did find any instructions online. There was no spreader in my bag. i got it done regardless. Nice video that wasn't relevant to the job.
She guessed wrong. My clicking this video had nothing to do with windows.
I too like the color orange
Simonton didn't include the spreaders with my parts, but I was able to use the old parts to make an impromptu spreader. See here: ua-cam.com/video/PyqGIQd--2c/v-deo.html
Can you come fix my window ?
Calling for help soon... need to speak please
Great instructional video...except for the background music. It was awful. No doubt, it's the kind of music they use to torment the inmates at Guantanamo. The sonic equivalent of Chinese water torture.
Fat chance! I called Simonton to order parts and they sent me packing to dealers. It's been weeks and still waiting on replies from them. Sad.
She needs show the parts up closer. Her hands are e always in the way.

Historical windows don't have plastic pieces...this video title is deceiving
My 1950s era windows had a coil balance on the left hand Jamb, I saw the metal coil hanging out from the bottom of the wooden window after the handyman had opened it. It seemed not easy to replace those coil so I replaced a new one instead of repairing it.
