Thnks for the info. Just the info I needed. You have a great voice and demeanor for video work. Nice job! Update 11/23/2021: I ordered two new channels per the number stamped into the metal frame from SWISCO. Cost about $35 dollars shipped to my door. I watched your video a couple more times and with a few tries, was able to install the new balances. I used your candle wax method and the window now slides up and down easily. Thanks again for your video! There is no way I would have figured it out on my own. I'm retired and 73 years old, so it feels good to get something meaningful done.
This saved me from getting into a major project. No window glass shops in the area were ready to repair this - everyone wanted me to get an expensive replacement. Your video helped me get it fixed!
This is a great video, thank you for doing this. Really enjoy the humor and graphics. Virtually all my windows need the balance replaced. A window company wanted $10k to do them all, can't believe it's this simple and SO glad I watched this video and didn't hire them.
Thanks, shipmate! This was the perfect solution for me. Balance springs unclipped or broken on 3 windows but your clear instructions were a Godsend! Many thanks!
Thank you for this video. I just used it to reinstall my daughter's window after both balances went loose. After repositioning the balances as you described, I had to remove the window shades since I could not get the window high enough above the bottom of the balance. Aside from that, everything else went as you described. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Hey! Thanks for this. The window company wanted $1,200 to "adjust" some single hung windows that just need some fresh balance springs. You saved me $1,100. Much appreciated.
Well done, clear concise, correct. There are details that help refresh the memory of a 50+ yrs. experienced Home R&R/GC and this vid fits the bill. Thanks!
Wow ! This is the perfect video . Just what I needed to fix my bathroom window that has been kept up by different objects for the last few months . Thanks !!
YOU SAVED ME ... I checked another video previously and he left out the part about the channel locks ... once I set the balances in the locks the window installed perfectly. THANKS.
Great video!!!! Very helpful!!!!!!!!!!! I really like not hearing music in the background during the whole presentation like so many people do. Thank you....
Great video - thank you so much. Just saved me $3400, which I was quoted for new windows because my old 50 year windows 'probably couldn't be fixed'. BTW, as you take out your channel balance spring - note which slit your channel hooks into. Mine had two options, which I didn't notice as I was removing it. I initially did my new install using the wrong slit, which resulted in the window not being able to close. No biggy, just had to take out the window and re-do my efforts, but if I'd known my window had options I would have paid attention as I removed it. I was able to find my replacement parts from SWISCO, thanks to the hint in the other comments here. I took measurements and then sent them a few pictures and they responded quickly with exactly the part I needed. $34 later and I'm all set.
This was amazing! We just moved into a house with several of the windows broken just like this and I had no idea what to do. I was dreading having the windows replaced. But now I feel comfortable repairing them myself, thank you!
Thank you for the video. I kind of already knew what I needed to do but having the visual helped. Also the wax is a good idea. You’re right about WD-40. In the end it tracks more grime and it only temporarily makes the window easier to slide up and down.
Many thanks to you Mr Pirate Handyman, I got new windows and the springs came apart and after an hour or so, plenty of cursing and heavy drinking i finally quit got on the computer and found you. Took be about 3 minutes to fix it. thanks again
Super helpful info for a quick repair this morning.. the single hungs had a different method on the ones the company i worked for built so this helped understand this method. A big thanks for the vid. Worth subscribing to the channel.
Thx. Your video just helped me reinstall the hook and spring mechanism. Mine fell out because my wife raised the window too high. Helpful criticism, I could not see the part of the hook that catches on the window frame in your video. This was easy to figure out from the rest of your instructions. Just for future reference
I had to repair one of the balances (replace the cord). It was a bit tricky as the small clips needed to be reused. Got it done and reinstalled and your video was instrumental to that. Thank you very much!
This was awesome! I was going to replace the old windows to the tune of $500 plus each for the odd size. Instead I’m going to replace the slides just as you say! Thank you👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
He man thanks for showing me how to pull this type of window out. What would you do if no matter what the window won't slide enough to either side to come out? With a screwdriver, I force the counterbalance down and can see it's what's keeping me from pulling the window out but I'm also causing some damage to the frame.
I have purchesd some new parts for my 28 years old windows , aluminium "single hung" double pane , but the Sash Balance Top Guide plastic parts are bigger / longer compared with the original ones and the 2 screws are not matching the holes for the screws . Where can I buy the right size of Sash Balance Top Guides matching my windows . I do not know the manufacturer of the windows since I bought the house 3 years ago . Any adice would be helpful . Thank you .
Aye, matey, do they part numbers match on the new and the old balances? If not, try searching by the part number on the side of the original balance. The windows in the video were also about the same age as yours. If the part numbers DO match, then you'll need to contact a local window dealer and ask them. Good luck, matey!
Just a question I’ve been reading trying to see if someone’s already asked but where would you go to order the new part? Is there a trusted website you use or just go with something like Amazon???

Thank you so much for this! I have been trying to find a video like his for two years now! Do you get the extraction clip from some place specific or did it come with the replacement counterbalance?
Any suggestions for a window that has jammed? I’m guessing the counterbalance is bent and wedged inside in such a way that renders the whole window unmovable, up or down.
Aye, matey, ye be in a pickle. if you can get a small space at the bottom, try putting a piece of wood in the space, and gently tap upwards. If that doesn't work, you may need to call a window contractor. Sorry!
