- This was far better then the album version in my opinion. I loved alan wilder playing the piano :D
This is my reaction to Depeche Mode Condemnation. This is also my first watching Condemnation, Depeche Mode devotional tour 1993 Reaction
#reactionvideo #depechemode #devtionaltour #musicreactions
Depeche Mode Reaction, Reaction to Condemnation, Reaction to songs of Faith and devotion Album reaction, DM Songs of Faith and Devotion songs,
Martin Gore, Dave Gahan, RIP Andrew Fletcher, alan wilder
This song never fails to give me goosbumps, even 30 years later. They've brought it back for the current tour, though not in every concert, and when the song hit, I legit cried. I think Dave was really happy to be singing this song again after many years.
The backup singers are Samantha Smith and Hildia Campbell. You hear them on the SOFAD album as well as on the single version of "Condemnation" (called the Paris Mix.) Hildia Campbell also contributed vocals to Alan Wilder's Recoil project on 1997's Unsound Methods. Worth checking out.
This performance is so epic! Martin's backing vocals give me goosebumps!
Same ! It just brings another level of chills.
Maybe the moment that the church of Depeche Mode was founded 🤣?? Dave's voice, Martin's voice, Samantha and Hilda. Alan on the piano... it's one of the most beautiful and intense performances by anyone -- and why I find certain moments of DM concerts to be a religious experience...
Agreed!
I attended a concert of this tour and I remember many people saying that condemnation is the song to fetch a beer. Most of the fans disliked that song.
Nowadays it is a classic and they still play it on the current tour. Amazing how times and attitudes change.😀
the coolest and greatest group ever
The piano Wilder is playing is the Korg 01/W Pro X transplanted onto an acoustic piano body. The 01/W would see some use on Songs of Faith & Devotion and for various songs on this tour, as well as the Recoil album Unsound Methods (1997) and Liquid (2000).
Wow! How is that posible?
A synth station in a piano body, that's a rare and cool fact!
As usual mindblown by your comment❤
Martin’s voice in this video. Lordt, so soulful and divine. 😌😇 I love the background singers. Such talented ladies.
Yes…the ladies are next level. Martin David and Alan outdid themselves on this one.
THE SAME EMOTION THAT YOU ARE FEELING WITH EACH REACTION IS THE SAME THING THAT MANY OF US FEEL, SINCE WE HAD THE LUCK OF SEEING THIS CONCERT LIVE, AND AS I HAD TOLD YOU BEFORE, MANY SURPRISES WERE COMING... AND MANY MORE ARE COMING, KEEP ENJOYING THIS GREAT TOUR. IT'S ALMOST COMING MR. MARTIN GORE. SALUDOS DESDE MEXICO.
Aaaaaand DM became a religion...this performance was a tectonic shift ...seeing Alan play piano...back up singers...and theres more to come...❤❤❤
In the summer of 1994, the Devotional tour was extended with a number of gigs in partly new countries for the group. This extended Devotional tour was called the "Exotic tour" and took place in Africa, Asia, Australia, and South America.
During this tour they had Martin sing Condemnation instead of Dave. And the song took on a slightly different character.
During the Exotic tour, which was the end of the Devotioal tour, the group's problems were revealed more and more clearly during the performances. Dave was clearly high on stage, and Martin, who had a problem with alcohol, was often visibly drunk.
There is no great material from the Exotic tour, but some amateur films.
Search; "Depeche Mode - Exotic Tour Live in Biloxi 5 June 1994" here on youtube. Martin sings Condemnation (drunk) - from 41 minutes and 15 seconds into the clip.
Not to mention for the Exotic Tour Fletch left and replace my tour manager Daryle Balamnote and the stage was changed to save cost as the lost money in the devotional tour
YES Seph, YOU ARE RIGHT... SIMPLY GORGEOUS...!!!
Just to let you know
The song has a sample of Fletch hitting a flight case with a metal pole,
and it’s used as a drum
By the way, Martin also does lead vocals on Condemnation. You’ll have to wait for the second leg of this tour.
I know Dave was completely broken in this tour but, my God... what a performer! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Amazing, thanks for bringing back the memories!
Your new haircut is awesome 😎😎👍👍
Thank you 😊
Simply amazing. This is easily one of, if not the best live vocal performance ever performed by Dave.
Some them three times this tour, twice in the Devotional tour and once in the exotic tours. They werent concerts, they were religious experiences. I was 13&14 at the time and forever changed my life
When you finish to review Devotional, search for "Condemnation Live 1994"... it is with Martin as lead vocalist... no impressive "eeeeeeeeehhhhhs" on that, but a very beautiful vocal work by Mart.
you're soooo right. love that version... ❤❤❤❤❤
So love this song ... the gospel theme ...!! and the harmonies ...!!😍 Like the new haircut by the way Seph ...
Thank you Gary :D
This song has echoes of gospel, which is obviously not a genre normally associated with DM. You might even say this harkens back to an old school spiritual.
The women singing in the back were amazing too! Much better than Peter Gordeno doing that job now😅. No offense, just my opinion
anyway the 'Depeche Mode - Condemnation (Martin L. Gore)' + Peter version also a pretty cool one :)
It’s so great sharing your enthusiasm for these songs! Nice to see you enjoy them as much as so many, including me. Seph, can you please share your background screen? Where did you get it?
Great performance ! For all of them ! Bangerrrrr👍👍👍
Dave's voice still sounds remarkably good here, but there are signs it's starting to give. On the second leg, the so-called Exotic Tour, Martin will take over singing the lead vocals. Martin's wailing harmonies are fantastic here and the extension of his arms gives it a real dramatic flair. The band really pulled out all the stops, even bringing out an acoustic piano for Alan to play here. It's a shame the video only gives us the briefest glimpses of his performance. But it seems it wasn't actually an acoustic piano, but rather the Korg 01/W Pro X transplanted onto an acoustic piano body. I imagine this was more practical because it didn't require tuning. But nonetheless, this added touch shows their level of commitment to providing a compelling show.
You look so flippin' handsome here, dude.
Wow! I never knew this about the piano/keyboard Frankenstein hybrid! 😮
That Martin "screaming" voice is actually on the album version too but you don't notice it as much there cause you don't see it....
In my opinion Seph, the greatest tour. It builds & builds through the concert like no other. I still remember seeing them at Sheffield Arena in 1993 - we didn't have the internet or You Tube in the old days 😂 so it was all such a surprise. They are still great now, but the Devotional was special. I recently bought the DVD to watch again after 20+ years, as I used to have it on VHS video. It still sounds fresh - DM post-1986 always sounded like the future, so it doesn't age. Great reaction once again!
Saw them three that tour, twice at the Forum in L.A. and at the Irvine Meadows foe the Exotic Tour. 13 year old me was forever changed
Great reaction again seph. Definitely the best version but you still have more Great tracks on this tour to see. Also they have added another 02 date at the end of January
Welocome to the party
Love this version but martin version is more blues .
It´s gets better. (Yes, believe me, or the commands) Stay tuned and you´ll be surprised with every song on this tour. Unfortunately, this great tour is the last great tour. (Except... Painkiller- Intro 1998. I repeat myself......) 1994 : I only know it from bootlegs. It wasn´t in Europe. But gigantic, phenomenal as it was, DM broke the first time and was never the same again, in my opinion.
Devotional tour was naughty anyway !
While I enjoy Live versions at times, I rarely prefer to listen to them over the album versions. I think the attraction to some is they have seen these shows back then so it reminds them of the concert they went to and it gives it a boost to them . I do enjoy listening to the 101 album as a whole though.
Proof of your fandom.. name song in only a couple seconds of hearing it
it's totally offtopic but ... but 'Depeche Mode (Happy Birthday to my daughter Addie) @ T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, NV 03-30-23' just open it :)))
I read somewhere that Martin is biracial. Is that true?
Yes
slowly, you are about to reach the top, the highest point... then the slow, inexorable descent...
