  • In this video, I just purchased a 2023 Tesla Model Y Performance and show my driving experience from Florida to Indiana using its Full Self Driving and Tesla's Supercharging Network.
    This car and the network really surprised me. The car is very nice and there are superchargers everywhere. At first I thought a 10-25 minute stop would be a pain but after driving for 2-2.5hrs I found the stops relaxing. By the time I went in to use the restroom, got a drink and then walked back to my car it was charged and ready to go.

    WOW!!! I really enjoyed this delivery type video. I've watched many of these in my time, but the way you're not just overly ecstatic and loud or just completely geeky about everything, is just sooo satisfying. Really calming actually. And I think that also has to do with how you're still sort of new to the whole system. Keep up the good work y man.

    Glad that you figured out to not charge to 100% when supercharging. Saves lots of time and is better on the battery. Plus, charging to 100% is not often needed anyhow.

      I am trying to stay between 20-80. If I have a long trip I’ll go to 90-95 right before I leave. I try to charge around 14-20 if possible.

      Unless you have one with the LFP battery, then charging to 100 percent doesn't hurt the battery. Totally correct on charging above 80 percent taking longer, then it doesn't matter what battery chemistry you have. I typically try to charge to 100 percent before leaving on long trips then follow the supercharging stops provided by the navigation. I will occasionally allow the charge to go a little longer than the recommended amount depending on conditions and location. For example I recently did a stretch through the smoky mountains and made sure my battery was a little higher to account for the added drain of climbing the steep grades. Not entirely necessary but it doesn't hurt anything, still didn't charge above 80.

    • @ZKTheGreat
      @ZKTheGreat 11 місяців тому +1

      @@Hunleygarage The car feels glued to the ground even in the rain. I’m skipping the winter tires. Why do you want the LFP batteries? It gets less range and it’s slower.

    • @Hunleygarage
      @Hunleygarage  11 місяців тому +3

      LFP is projected to get around 10k life cycles instead of lithium ion’s 3k. Because of its iron base, it is heavier and I think a little bigger than the ion based battery. Because of that it does have less capacity per size/weight but it is less expensive, less volatile and has at least double if not triple the life cycles. You can also charge it to 100% and discharge to near 0. Because of that, you actually get the full capacity of the battery vs 60% of the ion (supposed to manage between 20-80% = 60% usable capacity for longevity). If you consider that you can use the iron based version from 0-100% without concern vs 60% of the ion - it actually has more useable capacity than an ion battery size/weight - a lot more.
      If you figure using an ion battery from 10-90% - a cycle - at a 3,000 cycle life. And my Y gets 280 watts a mile and is a 75k watt battery - (75k x .8 = 60,000 watts / 280 watt/miles = 214 miles a cycle)
      Lithium Ion - 214 miles a cycle x 3,000 = 642,000 miles per pack.
      LFP - (say it has 60K pack which is same miles) 214 miles a cycle x 10,000 = 2,140,000 miles per pack.
      I also have experience with LFP batteries in my Prevost - most everything uses them now - I want it in my EV.
      I would work on a trade if they offered a Y with them.
      Just my 2 cents.

    • @ZKTheGreat
      @ZKTheGreat 11 місяців тому +2

      @@Hunleygarage First, great explanation but I highly doubt most first time owners will keep the car for 642,000 miles so the ion battery will be fine. I see myself upgrading after 3-5 years (I’ll have 60k miles on my car just to get the new features and possibly the refresh version.
      The performance is so worth it in my opinion. I would miss that a lot. Makes every ride a fun one and yeah I don’t get over 200 miles per charge but I still enjoy every mile more. I rent so I have to super charge once a week (nearest super charger is 12 mins away) and I still think the performance is worth every penny/charging session. Also LFP battles take longer to charge. I’ve heard almost an hour to get a full charge. So for renters it’s a problem. Range isn’t a problem for home owners and I don’t think life cycle is either. The average car owner in the US only keeps their car for 37 months.
      Also I haven’t even included the fact that The performance models are uncommon. You see LFP and long ranges everywhere. I rarely see a MYP or even 3 performance.

      @@ZKTheGreatI got my MYP this year and skipping the winter tyres as well. Picked it up in April and I have almost 15,000km on it. Didn’t feel like I’ve driven the car for that long. Best car I have owned. I live in an apartment and there’s a free government charger close to where I live so never bothered about installing a charger in my parking spot. Never supercharged the vehicle as well because I haven’t gone on any long trip. Most of the time, the free Level 2 charger gives me enough juice to get by weekly.

I really like the lower stance, bigger wheels and tires, red calipers and speed - but find myself trying to see how efficient I can be. The performance set up also rides rougher. I’m thinking about another set of tires - maybe 18’s! For snow and alternate set up. I am finding the 21” wheels and tires on Facebook for a dime a dozen brand new - and can’t find the standard 18’s. Just something to consider.

    • @Hunleygarage
      @Hunleygarage  11 місяців тому +2

      It works but I think we as a society aren’t ready. The cars follow the law, and when 99% of the human drivers don’t, it causes anxiety. It’s says driving on city streets will come in the future but it will already. When it stops to scan for traffic - it pauses for awhile to be certain it’s safe - which is good, but it causes pauses that humans don’t make. If that makes since.

    • @R56Cooper
      @R56Cooper 11 місяців тому +1

      @Hunleygarage totally makes sense! Thanks for the insight- there is still the 'human finesse' that the FSD system still has to learn. That being said, if FSD can perform 95% of the time-- will gladly intervene on those other 5% cases just to make the drive even more smooth.

    Congratulations. I bought a Model S a few years ago when I lived in Indiana, picked it up in Chicago on a Monday and drove it to St. Pete that Friday. It's a heck of a way to get to know your car! It took me through "deliverance" country too! On the way back from Florida I kept it on the main highway though, that country back way had me arrive at the charger @ 3% state of charge on the way down.
    Question, how did you go about purchasing through your mother in order to get the added FL incentives? I'm planning to purchase a Model 3 Performance soon and would definitely like to so the same thing!! I've moved from Indiana to Arizona and neither state has any EV incentives at all!

      It is the FSD, that when I bought the car was free for 3 months. It is neat although not $15k neat. I figure if I really want it, I would do the monthly for $200. If I keep the car for 5 years - 60 * $200 = $12k - it's still cheaper to do by month.... On a long trip it is nice. For around town - hoping the next version is better - it's still like driving with a timid first time driver. I would recommend the data - I did the year at once for like $100 - so it was less expensive. No reason to waste money on the same thing. Make sure you get your phone all set up, always on, etc and learn where the wind shield wipers are - I left and it started raining and had no clue how to turn them on. My fault but lesson learned

      I think the FSD has a bit to go when around chaos, but not sure how. I’ve noticed that the car follows the law to a T. We humans don’t, as much as we think we do. That’s when the issues begin. If people obeyed the speed limits, follow distance, traffic signs - FSD is really close. It’s because we have a vehicle doing everything right, that it feels so wrong - if that makes since. Speeding to maintain the flow of traffic. Maybe hitting the edge of a yellow light because it makes since to proceed vs slamming on your brakes. Knowing the other car is not paying attention and swerving into my lane - but instead of braking, just ease up on the speed - let them into my lane and then correct and get out. If all cars had FSD it wouldn’t be a problem. From my little experience letting it drive, it’s how it should deal with all the chaos that is the issue. At the stop, it wanted to get in the right lane, I wanted to go straight. The highway was on the route if I had paid attention - another couple I met a super charger said they go that way all the time…. Just my thoughts

      Definitely buy it. Best thing I have ever bought. Not just car, but item in general. Once you get into it you will realize how good it is and probably prefer to take it road tripping as well. Everybody “hates” it for roadtripping, until they try it, and then it turned into my favorite way to road trip. Hard to explain until you try it. There is no planning: just tell the car where you want to go and it does all of the planning for you, in about 15 seconds. No one road trips and only goes to the bathroom when they need fuel, every 500 miles. Human bladders don’t work that way. It’s not a flaw, it’s a feature to stop every few hundred miles, get out, stretch, have a walk about, play with the kids and have a mini-adventure, whatever. Get a snack. The charge time is just enough to be useful and often too short. Like I said, have to try it. If you have pre-determined that you’re going to hate it, then you will. It’s quite good though.

      Tesla FSD Beta drive everywhere. I use it daily, sometimes for Uber driving, and it works everywhere. Most drives are with zero interventions, and the more time goes by the better it gets, for free, automatically. Blue cruise doesn’t have the same improvement cycle, and can’t handle construction zones, sharp corners, inclement weather, city streets, etcetera. FSD Beta works on dirt roads, slows for speed bumps, and reroutes to save time with real-time traffic updates. I actually learn things from FSD Beta.

    What did it cost you to charge for the trip?

    • @Hunleygarage
      @Hunleygarage  11 місяців тому +1

      I think it was $114. Here is some math.
      If you figure 300 watts a mile (I can get 250 in town and 325 highway) and $.11 a kw at home and $.33 a kw at super chargers.
      At home it costs $.03 per mile in electricity.
      At a super charger it costs $.10 per mile in electricity.
      If you figure fuel is $3.5 a gallon,
      charging at home you would need a car to get 117 mpg to cost the same.
      Charging at a super chargers you would need a car to get 35 mpg to cost the same.
      If you slow down, it takes less watts per mile. If you charge at home it costs less per kw. So lots of variables.
      The electric F150 takes 500 watts to go a mile. So it costs $.06 and $.17 a mile in power. So 58mpg at home and 20mpg at supercharger.
      The hummer takes 623 watts per mile - so $.07 and $.21 a mile or 50 mpg and 17 mpg.
      If you full charge at home before leaving on a trip and return home around 10-15% - you maximize the total cost of power.
      Lot of factors to consider. Weird to think you can fuel your vehicle at home 3 times cheaper than at a public charger.
