  • "Doctor Who" follows the adventures of the primary character, a rogue Time Lord/Lady from the planet Gallifrey, who goes by the name "the Doctor". The Doctor has gained numerous reoccurring enemies during their travels, including the Daleks, the Cybermen, and the Master, a renegade Time Lord. Star Jodie Whittaker, the latest person to take on the beloved mantle of Doctor Who, and showrunner Chris Chibnall stop by to discuss the new season of the popular series.

    • @slee168
      @slee168 5 років тому +2

      John Berry, Fair point. The "problem" (although not really much of a problem!) is that there's a different viewpoint on Doctor Who in the US; for them it's a niche geeky show, so the US audience is disproportionately geeky, and they geek out about it to an excessive degree! But in the show's home environment it's NOT like that at all. In the UK, Doctor Who is not niche and geeky, it's mainstream and HUGE.
      For Brits, Doctor Who is part of national identity, part of the language, in a way that Mickey Mouse or Superman would be for an American. There are UK geeks of course, but they are a TINY fraction of the viewership. For the vast majority of UK viewers, the show is like any other TV drama which they are happy to watch every week, without then analysing on the internet or drawing fanart about! So the US audience does seem a bit (ok, a LOT!) more obsessive by comparison!

    I'm more excited to see the rest of the season then the premier, don't get met wrong, it's not that the previous doctor had bad first episodes. But they have the excuse of the generation not being done cooking even after the doctor changes. So it's usually like the doctor is all over the place until they see something that fit, and then the next 3 episodes really hones in for what we can expect from this run.
    I hope they manage to actually do 1 series per year, so that we won't get these 18 months long waiting periods with only 1 christmas special. Also if she follows the tradition of only doing 3 series with delays, then the next doctor is barley going to be established before the 60th anniversary which is probably going to try and go bigger then the day of the doctor now that this show has gotten more worldwide recognition. So either she should stay on and then maybe end the 60th anniversary with a generation if she feels like leaving, or I hope she gets 3 series and 2 christmas specials before and after. And let the next actor have gotten familier with the audience. I know that is looking a long ways ahead, but I really want to see this happen, if they try and really massage Eccolston to come back :p It could be really cool to get a 5 doctor story again but with the revived numbered doctors
    I know that Tennant and Smith will probably always come back if asked, and probably Capaldi to, and getting to see them all on screen together would be in her first words "Oh brilliant!".

    This was interesting and I'll give you something, that's a good question from the host, although it has an obvious and a not so obvious answer too. Everything in Doctor Who can be canon or not, officially speaking, but the generally accepted thing is that the show stays first, I mean, nobody would put their hands in the fire over potentially ambiguous extended canon whether it works or not. I did hear about that novel and the concept of the looms, but like Chibnall, I never read it. Time Lord asexuality and reproductive machines have been hinted here and there, although... what's 100% known to us is that Time Lord "regular" sexuality is possible and over-exposure to the time winds makes you into a "sort of Time Lord", for a lack of a better word (and that's "a way" on how Time Lords may have expanded their society), the Looms could explain a lot about Time Lord regenerations and how different Time Lords deal with that (from Romana to the General to River to the Doctor itself), one thing doesn't completely nullify the other (actually, it might add up to that. Maybe not all Time Lords were fond of the idea of living by "normal standards"). The obvious answer is "it's extended canon, you know what happens to non-generally accepted canon - the show's lore stays first", the not so obvious answer is "it's compatible with lore I think, there's a gray area in the lore where that could definitely stay".

    I hope there are a lot of references to Peter Capaldi's Doctor during Whittaker's run. During the 12th Doctor's run he spent billions of years in the confession dial, returned to Gallifrey and exiled Rassilon, faced villians like the Master/Davros/Daleks/Cybermen/Ice Warriors and others.
    The 12th Doctor did the most out of any Doctor, and i assume those events will be fresh in the mind of the 13th Doctor.
    I know the show wants to attract a different audience, but please Chibnall don't make the 13th Doctor forget about almost all previous events like they never happened.

    • @rachelbreault700

    • @heinrichhimmler3277
      @heinrichhimmler3277 5 років тому +3

      That really sucks because there are parts of 12's era that would affect the Doctor forever. There are also a few plots that need to be explored more.
      What happened to Rassilon after the Doctor exiled him? Does Rassilon want revenge?
      The Time Lords are at the end of the universe and Davros now has knowledge of their return. What happened to Davros? What are the Time Lords doing? Will there be another Time War?
      I hope the things I've stated eventually in Whittaker's run. Maybe not in the first season but the season after. I am quite intrigued to see how the Doctor adjusts to this regeneration, as 12 didn't want to go on and had enough.

    • @heinrichhimmler3277
      @heinrichhimmler3277 5 років тому +2

      I also have a gut feeling that the fact the Doctor is a Time Lord will rarely (if at all) mentioned in the upcoming season.
      I think Chibnall will humanize the Doctor and make her almost an equal to her "friends". She's smarter, more intelligent, superior, and probably the most powerful Time Lord to ever exist. I hope that's made clear to the new audience that the BBC are targeting.

    • @Swenglish
      @Swenglish 5 років тому +2

      The Doctor both did and didn't spend all that time in the confession dial. He was destroyed and re-printed over and over again, essentially being restored to the initial point of arrival in terms of experience. The confession dial had the Doctor in it for all that time, but the instance of the Doctor who survived it didn't experience being in the confession dial for all that time. Only the last bit.
      I'm sure they'll get to making call backs and picking up on loose threads in later seasons. This first season is meant to work as a welcoming jumping on point for new viewers. That's fairly normal for the show. Moffat's first season was also pretty much a fresh start, except for returning monsters, same for Davies's. I'm sure some of the basics will be "revealed" to new viewers over the course of the season, and then it'll keep building from there and start pulling more from the past over time, and sooner or later they'll do another Gallifrey-related episode or storyline. Give it time.

    14 regenerations and 13 faces. Interesting. 14 regenerations is correct if you count both War Doctor and Ten2, but if so then it should be 14 faces too.. 13 faces is correct if you omit War. PEDANT! PEDANT!

    • @ariesroc
      @ariesroc 5 років тому +7

      No, he got it right. In the fiction the Doctor has had 14 regenerations and 13 faces. JW's Doctor is the 14th face as he did say "finally" after 13 faces. The one regeneration at the end of Series 4 did not result in the Doctor getting a new "face" as in a new incarnation. Instead that resulted in DT's 10 staying in the same incarnation and the regeneration energy created the duplicate "meta-crisis" 10th Doctor that went with Rose to another universe.
      MS is the 12th regeneration, PC the 13th regeneration (and first of a new cycle of 12) and JW is the 14th regeneration.

    • @thejellyfisha
      @thejellyfisha 5 років тому +2

      Yeah I guess his wording of "after...xyz" means hes counting the 13 faces prior to Jodie

    • @ariesroc
      @ariesroc 5 років тому +2

      Sorry I got confused myself. I should have said the Doctor has had 14 regenerations and 14 faces.
      The interviewer referred to 14 regenerations and 13 faces prior to JW's "13th Doctor" with her's being the 14th face.
      It was so easy before the "meta-crisis" Doctor and "War" Doctor. Suddenly Matt Smith's Doctor went from being regeneration 10 to regeneration 12 after it was acknowledged that the "meta-crisis" regeneration counted as one and then the "War" Doctor was added in 2013.
      So now DT's 10th Doctor went from being regeneration 9 to 10 then he also was in a way also regeneration 11 or rather that body got restored/regenerated while the hand that was lost in The Christmas Invasion then regenerated into another version of DT's 10th Doctor.
      I have a visual chart to keep it straight!

    • @thejellyfisha
      @thejellyfisha 5 років тому +4

      It wouldn't be Doctor Who without an overly convoluted endlessly confusing lore!

    • @ariesroc
      @ariesroc 5 років тому +1

      Possibly but like I said the regenerations were very simple Doctor 2 is regeneration 1, Doctor 3 is regeneration 2 and so on through Doctor 7 being regeneration 6, Doctor 8 was regeneration 7.
      So whatever number of the Doctor that was also the incarnation number and the regeneration number was simply minus 1 with the 1st Doctor being the original.
      Now the 13th Doctor is the 14 regeneration but also the 14th incarnation/face. If the old way had continued on then Doctor 13 would have been the 13th incarnation/face but the 12th regeneration.
      So the "meta-crisis" and "War" Doctors jump Doctor 13 to incarnation 14 instead of 13 and regeneration 14 instead of 12.

    After watching the series it’s safe to say this season was the lowest of the low across the board from the acting and story telling. The story telling was on the free fall from season 10 and the PC story lines and the diversity agenda were poorly implemented. It’s changed to a show that fits on CBBC rather than prime time Sunday evening TV. Also these long years off are ridiculous are they this inept at turning around 10 episodes a year!

    One of the weakest (if not the weakest) Who writers promoting a fresh start? Loaded language like "fresh start", "about time". Advertising that focuses on the feminist agendga of pc speech. Not considering male actors for the role, the change from compaions to "friends" in addition to the slow descent into full blown anti-male rhetoric in previous seasons. Not looking good.

    • @pikaplayzhd595
      @pikaplayzhd595 5 років тому +9

      Everything you just said is pure and utter BS.
      "One of the weakest Who Writers, if not the Weakest" not even close.
      "Promoting a fresh start" that is nothing new, Doctor Who has done this many times before
      "About Time" has multiple meanings and has been used as a slogon before
      "Not Considering Male Actors for the role" with previous casting female actors werent considered either, (in fact in the case of Peter and David ONLY they were considered and chosen) double standards? Anyway If casting a woman was part of Chibnall's vision who cares as long as it is done well.
      "The change from Companions to Friends" Companions ARE Friends
      "Anti-Male Rhetoric in Previous Seasons" and those were under Steven Moffat, who I might add is gone.
      Grow up and stop being so sensitive to everything.

      @@pikaplayzhd595 I would love an example of a decent episode this hack wrote then. Because his writing is predictable and boring. Example: The hungering Earth, I think its called.
      As to the fresh start, well if you add that to oh so subtle, about time and glass ceiling scene, its pretty clear what message they are sending.
      As for casting of other doctors? How does that come into it? I never stated that I approve of narrowing the selective fields. Merritocracy should be the only criteria. Which this new doctor has failed at.
      If Companions are friends, why change the name? Unless words have meaning and Companions are more than friends, they help ground the Doctor to real life and problems of smaller beings.
      The interview is full to the brim of virtue signalling nonsense.
      "Grow up" Really? Good arguement.
