  • We received these beautiful display segments at the 29th Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg from the guys at muCCC (muc.ccc.de). They didn't provide any information about how to do anything with them, so we had to do just a little reverse engineering. After figuring out the whole circuit-board layout to get an idea of what the developers intended for the interface, we verified our results using an ATmega32 on an AVR NET-IO.
    Technically we're able to drive the displays at roughly 10 FPS, which generates a considerable amount of current drawn by the e-magnets flipping the pixel-segments. To satisfy that demand we used the largest capacitor we could find around the hackerspace.

    The modules draw a lot of current. That's why we only drive the pixels that are new in each frame. This still is too much for our puny little powersource. This is the reason why pixels that failed to flip stay they way they are. Some pixels flip even though they don't have to. That's a software bug.

    • @JorgetePanete

      bytewerk the* way they are

    • @jonathanolson772
      @jonathanolson772 6 років тому +34

      bytewerk couldn't you calculate the current going through the display at any given time and use that to selectively sweep the board to make sure it's all flipped the correct direction while still staying within the power supply limits?

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 6 років тому +92

      I think the 'real' solution would be to not draw to the flip dots directly, but to draw to a frame buffer, and let a separate thread worry about displaying the buffer after it is completed. That way you can insure consistent bug free behavior. The rate that the buffer is written to the flip dots could be throttled so that it runs just under the speed that malfunctions occur. Then you would not need to go back and make sure things took.
      If you triple buffer, then you can do a comparison between the two complete buffers to determine if a pixel flip needs to occur or not, saving power.

    This is a prime example of why the human behind tech demos is scripted or bad at the game.
    Fantasticly done! But you're good, and this takes a while. Stage time pricy.

    It's a cool thing, but it needs to be improved: 1) It is better to send a signal along the line all the time or at least increase the amount of signal time, 2) It is better to connect each line separately, and not the entire display because the display needs vertical synchronization. I hope you bring your technology to the end! Good luck!
