Flipdot Tetris beta

- We received these beautiful display segments at the 29th Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg from the guys at muCCC (muc.ccc.de). They didn't provide any information about how to do anything with them, so we had to do just a little reverse engineering. After figuring out the whole circuit-board layout to get an idea of what the developers intended for the interface, we verified our results using an ATmega32 on an AVR NET-IO.
Technically we're able to drive the displays at roughly 10 FPS, which generates a considerable amount of current drawn by the e-magnets flipping the pixel-segments. To satisfy that demand we used the largest capacitor we could find around the hackerspace.

That's cool and all, but can it run *Doom?*
Justin Y. Probably, I think the single keyboard key had less pixel and about the same fps, so it should be fine.
A man with the right questions
Justin Y. Anything can run Doom at this point
linguicaguy my phone, my fridge, my router, my watch, hell, my fricken cat can probably run doom ffs

You forgot the "Boom"

lol i had "boom tetris for joseph" going in my head
Boom tetris
The clearing animation is soooo satisfying
That’s creepy.
Yeah this is like computer animation
YES
1:49
It's not an animation but actual motion.
I know this is 7 years old but this has got to be one of the coolest things I've seen this year.
Have a good day
@@myenglishisbadpleasecorrec5446 you too!
You mean 8?
I agree
@@movie8575 Man with moderate snark and obviously limited grasp of time as a function of linear progression attempts to inform year old comment that an additional year has passed since commenting.
The modules draw a lot of current. That's why we only drive the pixels that are new in each frame. This still is too much for our puny little powersource. This is the reason why pixels that failed to flip stay they way they are. Some pixels flip even though they don't have to. That's a software bug.
bytewerk the* way they are
bytewerk couldn't you calculate the current going through the display at any given time and use that to selectively sweep the board to make sure it's all flipped the correct direction while still staying within the power supply limits?
I think the 'real' solution would be to not draw to the flip dots directly, but to draw to a frame buffer, and let a separate thread worry about displaying the buffer after it is completed. That way you can insure consistent bug free behavior. The rate that the buffer is written to the flip dots could be throttled so that it runs just under the speed that malfunctions occur. Then you would not need to go back and make sure things took.
If you triple buffer, then you can do a comparison between the two complete buffers to determine if a pixel flip needs to occur or not, saving power.
I think you'd need v-sync lol
did you try to turn it off and on again?
Me: wow technology has come so far for this to be possible
*reads that this was posted 7 years ago*
Me: w u t
ah yes, because these types displays totally havent existed since 1961.
@@barry5 But things like the arduino and Rpi haven’t existed since them
@@GamingwithPortals Uh...yes they have. Arduino exists for 16 years and the Raspberry Pi is also older than this video. And the Arduino isn't some revolutionary new technology, it's just a series of prebuilt microcontroller boards with nice drivers and software around it.
@@SaHaRaSquad Ok I was just trying to figure out why this feels like a new video
@@GamingwithPortals why wouldn't you be able to use a full sized computer 30 years back? This tech is old and could've been done the same year Tetris came out if someone wanted to make a simple clone of it.
Can't wait to see fallout 4 be released on this platform
Justin Y. I swear i see you everywhere...
I think there is multiple accounts named Justin Y. with the same picture run by different people going all over youtube
DoctorSlimeStudios i checked there are only 2 but I’ve only seen 1 of them
Rip ears
I also see this person on a lot of videos I watch.
The cool thing about seeing this 7 years after it's release is wondering how much it's improved.
They upgraded to flat screen because of lower power requirements.
@@fungames24 lol progress to digress I guess 😭
It’s like you’re simultaneously solving multiple rubik’s cubes
that amazing sound...
@eric Spencer definitely not the sound would be faster then usually
I can't believe this was 8 years ago, ahead of time creation.
The algorithm in my account is pretty good at recommending videos
I know it's a glitch/ power problem but I really love the way sometimes pixels stick. It gives it a certain charm
Yeah, I love that.
Jonah Johansen same
Himmelen
Same. Also makes it feel more natrual in an odd way.
True!
@@cameoshadowness7757 exactly!
This is crazy!! One day i'd love to see a GameBoy emulator running on one of these displays, the grayscale games seem like a perfect fit for it, even thouhg GB games are technically capable of 4 colors, it'd be cool to see something with fast graphics that's interactable on one of these screens.
Holy shit I thought this was some kind of stop animation which was already impressive as it but the fact that this is actually. running. Tetris. holy shit
Your PFP is amazing. It took a minute for me to register it mentally, but it's absolutely brilliant.
@@IVR02 i don't get it. What's so brilliant about

@@jestfullgremblim8002 The pun amuses me. Obviously I exaggerated a bit in my comment.
@@IVR02 well, english and japanese are really different. So i didn't get the pun either. i'm a big fan of puns so maybe i would enjoy it a lot too!
@@jestfullgremblim8002 there's a store whose sign is formatted quite similarly, called Bath & Body Works. They sell candles, bath salts, etc, stuff you might use after a long day to soothe an aching back and body.
I thought the mechanical sounds would be irritating but I actually find them kind of soothing.
All it needs now is a floppytron speaker😉
FullFledged2010 Hell yes!
Floppy drive speaker would be BOSS!
Long live mechanics!!
tbh, I think a stepmotor speaker would fit better XD
@@cy-one Floppy drives are stepper motor driven 😉
@@FullFledged2010 I know, but there's a slight difference in tone between a tiny motor in a floppy and a NEMA 17 or 23 ;)
@@cy-one yup but bigger stepper motors are generally quieter. You'd need somekind of amplification system or resonance box. Especially for nema 23. I've got them on my cnc router and i barely hear them. 🤷♂️ depends on the steps per rev settings and amperage of course.
Seeing stuff like this always makes me think, is it possible to make a fully automated but totally *analogue* version? The answer is obviously yes but, I wish some one would do to.
If you're talking about a non-electric one: I totally agree with you, it would be super cool to see this done without elctronics
I think it was exactly this kind of thing that was in the book "The Difference Engine" by Gibson and Sterling, except I think that one was used for cinema and might had different colours too.
1:04 BOOM TETRIS FOR JEFF
TheValem lol its sad that i understood this
BOOM TETRIS FOR JONAS

This video just chilled for 7 years and then suddenly got recommended to everyone, nicee...
For some reason I just really love how when the frames update they take a while to actually go from one state to another, you can actually see them switching and that just looks awesome! Kinda like motion blur but better lol
It looks like scanlines which is trippy af
7 years ago this guy was still ahead of today. Respect through and through
Im So glad youtube reccomend me this it's a hidden gem
I completely agree!
Same!
Hidden gem Celeste
ちょくちょく色が反転しちゃう所を含めて味があって良い
Keep it up, other than a couple artifacts it looks lovely, which in case of Tetris matters a lot.
The amount of money I would Pay to get my unworthy hands on this masterpiece...
I remember playing something exactly like this at a museum. I think it was at Edinburgh but I'm not 100% sure
Everyone in 3 years ago: This is amazing dude!
Me in 2021: LETS MAKE BAD APPLE PV WITH USING THIS!
Already there is one ;)
There's something about analog stuff that the world is missing these days. That's why I love odd projects like this. Game never existed in this form, but feels nostalgic because it's like the old Departure/Arrival boards at the airport..
can it be made fully analog like using water and stuff?
True
日本人いるー?
カチャカチャって音が素敵。寝る前にプレイしたい
I've never even heard of these things before, but now I want it.
Quick question, does this recreation have SRS?
It take 8 years for youtube to recommend this.
Can it run minecraft?
Oh, i love these things. I remember there was a GIANT one at an indoor swimming pool when i was a kid in the early 90's. great sound.
Reminds me of old airports around the same time, too.
That’s really great. Imagine if the music was from the flipdots too 😆
The click-clacking of the tiles as pieces fall make the perfect beat for the Tetris theme!
Boom, Tetris for Jeff
RaZz00M ha
very nice
You don't understand just how much I need something like this
As master shake said "If I wanted to play Tetris I would just draw the blocks falling down on a flipnote pad"
Lol what episode
I like how some of the flipdots get stuck and it looks like there's a two block gap and he messed up, but halfway through it fixes itself
Coolest thing ever!!!
For 2013 folk, that was incredible
This Tetris remix is great. Where can I find it
Up
The algorithm has brought us together, brothas.
The sound it makes is really nice :D
Please upload a full (long) game in realtime too
Really dig the sound of it! It adds something.
Imagine what would the world look like if technology would've evolved into this instead of screens.
Great point.
How would 4k look like
@@RamiCrafy Pretty big lol
You realise that e-ink displays exist, right?
Your screen is just millions of points (pixels) after all
たまに反転ミスってるのも手作り感あって素晴らしい。👍
This is a fun way to play classics like this
This is amazing
(Btw, What background music is this?)
Think of all the TI-83 games you could play on this!
Nooooo, CELBITTTTT
Not only did you make an innovative and cool design for playing games, you also happen to be a Tetris god.
Finally, Videoless games.
Me: I like clicky keyboard switches.
CCC: What about clicky displays???
I can't wait till bethesda ports skyrim to this. Or it plays Bad apple.
"We managed to get it to run at 10fps" -Achievement unlocked:
I cant even run tetris without lag.
Awesome vid btw
What song is being used? (What remix of the tetris theme)
4k?
DLP is basically this but made as a microchip and it uses microscopic mechanical mirrors instead of these rotating black and white pieces. Technically it is possible to make a microscopic version of this and it would be cheaper and consume less energy than the large boards. And there is 4k DLP so it is possible to have a 4k flipdot panel...
Can you t spin on that
theres dead pixels
Dj jom2x Yeah, there is. That doesn't take away from how cool it is.
Yeah that's the problem with doing these kinds rapid movements on those boards is that there not built for it.
No update?
But can it run doom?
Good question😊
It's not perfect but it's better than anything i will ever do in my life.
Where did you source these boards?
This used to be a decommissioned highway info sign with 400 of these modules. The CCC from Munich gave 4 of them to us for reverse engineering. In the end we made this tetris game with it.
Love this. I made a similar one on my channel with M&Ms (my first ever stop motion video) and it got claimed by Tetris! Bonkers. It’s still there though. If you want to watch it.
UP主,是否可以制作bad apple呢?
UP master , you can create , bad apple
What are you trying to say
Um
That'd be a great idea actually
Best of all, no mobile ads!
But can you do a T-Spin?
I thought he is making a stop motion made of rubik's cube.
Its about levels 7-9 that my brain begins to go into “AHHHHH” mode
i'd like to see modern tetris mechanics like hard drop and the srs being implemented in this version
If this was it back in the 90s we would have never got away with sneaking a game at night.
Mom:stop staring at the screen, it's bad for your eyes

Currently using a 11 year old Mac, so not triggered just sad you don’t realize we’re our here, too 😅

This is a prime example of why the human behind tech demos is scripted or bad at the game.
Fantasticly done! But you're good, and this takes a while. Stage time pricy.
alot of screen tearing, disable vsync xD
okay this is really impressive
like damn
but can it run gex
1:12 Joseph Salee be like:
It's a cool thing, but it needs to be improved: 1) It is better to send a signal along the line all the time or at least increase the amount of signal time, 2) It is better to connect each line separately, and not the entire display because the display needs vertical synchronization. I hope you bring your technology to the end! Good luck!
That’s cool and all, but can it run Bad Apple?
Wait for a few decades for the developers to make GTA on a flipdot
I swear everybody is cooler than I am
We all feel the same way.
@@josefsinlimbo underrated comment
This is like torture by 100 simultaneously clicking pens but still pretty awesome tech display.
Has anyone done bad apple on this yet
There may be a few glitches but this is undeniably a work of art. This is something you’d find in a billionaire’s mansion or something. Seriously this is awesome
People who disliked: i can play tetris waaay better
The acctuall aim of the vid: uhm excuse me did i miss something?
First time enjoying some dead pixels and screen tear for “aesthetics”
*BAD APPLE*
It can possibly play WHOLE pokemom gen 1
