Malcolm X was my first hero. Even though I'm a white Canadian, I aspired to be like him. I recently rewatched Malcolm X and still love it. The ending is especially powerful today. "I am Malcolm X!"
Great list James and I'm totally with your #1 and #2 picks. Nice to see you give a shout-out to "The Last Waltz", which is a truly great concert film. "Love Jones" has been on my watch list since it came out and I really need to see it soon. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much for your kind words, Ben! I appreciate it. I’m glad you found the channel and this wild and crazy community of film lovers in this little corner of UA-cam 😀.
Didn’t know Okja was on Criterion! Great film. Been getting a few Bong films lately and I will put that in my wishlist 😊 David Lynch is my fave. I own Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks on Criterion, need to upgrade Lost Highway still 😊 My other faves that I own are Hausu, Ghost World, Trainspotting and Cure
Bong Joon Ho and David Lynch are two great filmmakers for sure. Love their films! I need to rewatch Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me and watch the tv series as I never caught that one during its initial run.
My favorite releases of 2022 are (in no particular order) Miller's Crossing, Lost Highway, Power of the Dog, Sound of Metal, Raging Bull, Double Indemnity, and Arsenic and Old Lace. For 2023 I'm really hoping for Amadeus and After Hours.
Wow! "Phenomenal" list, James! So difficult to pare down to only 10 titles! I'm with you on 'Buck and the Preacher', 'Malcolm X', and 'Wall-E' as I added them to my Library this year. Based upon your recommendations, I'll be adding 'Okja', 'Eve's Bayou' and ''Drive My Car' as well! There has never been a time to own and project such beautiful, restored movies in the home! Criterion really does go above and beyond with the bonus extra features!
Another great end of year list James! I agree about Denzel (my favourite actor) getting an Oscar for Malcolm X. Have a great holiday season, stay healthy, and I look forward to your videos in 2023!
Glad to hear you enjoyed this Top 10 list, Matt! It’s fun putting these lists together as I think back on the year in physical releases. It’s also challenging deciding which movies to include and ranking them 😀. Hope you have a Happy New Year 🎊🎈!
Awesome list! I really enjoy your content dude, you have such a great attitude and your enthusiasm for film really comes through. Super stoked to keep on watching your videos!
Jordan, thank you very much for the kind words! So glad to hear you enjoy the content. I love talking movies and learning more about film from this community and I’m excited for the new year. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on movies in 2023! Happy New Year!
You are totally right about the Oscar. First of all, Denzel should have won that year over Al Pacino ( I thought Pacino's performance in Scent of a Woman was vastly overrated but he was brilliant in Godfather 2). The Oscars so often get it wrong and actors often win for weaker roles..
So glad Pink Flamingos didn’t make your list I would have had to hit that unsubscribe bottom. 😆 Solid list only major surprise is Raging Bull not making the top 10. Hey lots of great releases like you said. I would say Exotica, Arsenic and Old Lace, Sound of Metal would also be on my list. Enjoyed the video looking forward to more in 2023! Happy Holidays!
Ha ha! Pink Flamingos was a strong release based on the supplements but I knew it would likely not make the top 10 at the end of the year 😀. Happy Holidays to you as well and Happy New Year!
I didn’t think Chick-fil-A was known for its coffee. It’s like going to seafood restaurant and getting a hamburger. Whatever happened to The worst person in the world, devil in a blue dress, Chan is missing, and Take Out? I remember how you were so overly excited about these movies and yet they didn’t get any honorable mention.
Hello, Thomas. 2022 was a great year for physical media and the additional titles you mentioned are also excellent titles that I’m sure are on people’s list of favorites for the year. I enjoyed Chan Is Missing and Take Out as well as The Worst Person … and Devil in a Blue Dress. All amazing.

Hi, Michael! Malcolm X is a powerful film indeed and Denzel’s performance in it stands up there with some of the best performances in film history.
Great list! Watching this reminding me I still haven't watched my copy of Shaft on 4KUHD, I'll be checking it out ASAP!
I definitely recommend watching that Shaft 4K edition. So good!
Happy New Year. Great list.
Happy New Year to you as well! Glad you liked my list.
Great list James and I'm totally with your #1 and #2 picks. Nice to see you give a shout-out to "The Last Waltz", which is a truly great concert film. "Love Jones" has been on my watch list since it came out and I really need to see it soon. Thanks for the video.
Glad you enjoyed this video and the picks, island007100! Hope you get a chance to enjoy Love Jones soon. It’s a really nice release by Criterion.
Great vid. My favorite criterion releases of 2022 was Malcom X & Shaft. Hands down....🔥🔥🔥🔥...JUNGLE FEVER needs some criterion LUV... 🤔
Glad you enjoyed the video, Joyce! Jungle Fever - now that would be an intriguing add to the collection. Would love to see that.
Great list James. Between the feature film, the sequel, and the supplements Shaft I would agree is #1.
Hey, Travelin Man! Yes, Shaft 4K is a special release this year from Criterion for sure. The total package.
thank you for all you do on this channel I'm a new subscriber to your channel and a huge criterion nerd just like yourself. keep up this great work
Thank you so much for your kind words, Ben! I appreciate it. I’m glad you found the channel and this wild and crazy community of film lovers in this little corner of UA-cam 😀.

Now that would be something - Rocky on Criterion. Anything is possible 😀.

@@20thand21stMovies Definitely check out the series! Feel free to nap through some of the episodes of season 2 though lol

Hello Hunter! Nice list of favorites, man. I too would love to see Amadeus and After Hours come next year. Fingers crossed .
Nice titles, I have much of the same I been buy all Denzale’s (lol) movies.
Awesome, Dave! Glad to hear you liked the titles and very happy Criterion released 3 titles this year starring Denzel Washington!

Double indemnity was my favorite release this year. Awesome release! I will check out eves bayou for sure as it seems interesting
Nick, Eve’s Bayou is a good one. Hope you enjoy it when you receive it!

I’m with you, Jon on your take on the Oscars. Sometimes they get it right and sometimes - well, you know 😂.
