Wes Anderson right out of the gate, NICE!!! Royal Tenenbaums & Grand Budapest are my faves, though I’m on the fence with picking up Life Aquatic. Should be interesting to see if they ever release French Dispatch.
Yeah, I’m going to hold off on picking up French Dispatch in case they do release a Criterion version. I learned my lesson with Moonrise and Grand Budapest
This is a great list! Got some good ideas of films to check out, thank you! These are the ones I own so far Videodrome Naked Lunch Paris, Texas Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me Hausu Y Tu Mama Tambien Ghost World Cure The Piano Teacher Funny Games Fantastic Planet Memories of Murder Mulholland Drive is my favourite film and I’m getting the Criterion very soon and probably some more Lynch Criterions
I'm amazed you're only at 16 subscribers I love your presentation great professional delivery and your clear love of Criterion. I do Let's Talk Criterion and preview new releases, I enjoyed your Top 10. I provided the shovel to dig the rabbit hole - I have over 400 titles now. I am a Criterion junkie
That’s awesome to hear, thank you so much! We only get a few Criterion sales every year, so we might as well spend as much as we can and make them count!
These are the Mainstays Media Shelves sold by Walmart and as far as I know, that specific size has been discontinued. Let me know if you’re able to find them for sale anywhere!
Great video. I have several of these releases but I admit, I have never seen Mullholland Drive. (hangs head in shame) I guess I F'd up. I'll check it out though.
Thanks Alex! We’ve all got those films that we’re ashamed we haven’t seen. Definitely check out Mulholland Drive, especially if you’ve seen Lynch’s other stuff and enjoyed it
12 Angry Men is such a favorite of mine! I remember reading the book and then watching the movie in school. I was honestly very impressed with the film, especially from a bunch of students taking turns reading to watch the roles being acted out was such a fond memory. As a new criterion Collector adding uncut gems first I think 12 Angry Men will definitely be my next.
@@joshramirez7 12 Angry Men is in my Letterbox 4. I love it. I have both releases in my collection, because there are some good supplements worth watching on the Criterion. However, I agree Kino's 4K presentation is fantastic and the definitive home release.
Love the Life Aquatic, very underrated Anderson! Never seen True Stories, but I’ve heard great things…may have to pick it up in the current Criterion sale. Thanks for watching!

I am so good you said you can't afford Criterion. I live in the UK and we are in hard financial times here.
Hey, thanks for watching! The Top 100 is part of our weekly podcast, search for Cinema Speak on iTunes, Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts and find Episode 100!
To me, Wes Anderson is synonymous with Criterion. The first DVD I ever bought, even before I had a player of my own, was the Criterion Rushmore. It took years for them to put Bottle Rocket out. I love the movie, but it bares no resemblance to Anderson’s other movies. It seems to take place in the “real world.” The bonus features are good, but I don’t like the director’s cut edits, however minor they are. And the original short is okay, but I’m shocked he got a feature movie deal out it. The 90s were a great time!
There's something I don't get about Rififi. There is a furnished apartment upstairs where they break in from. The sound sensitive alarm can't work up there, or no one could live there. So, until they are broken or breaking through, why are they being so quiet?
Dang, that’s a really good point. I haven’t watched the movie in a few years, so I can’t remember if there’s any sort of explanation for it. Either way, I think it’s a minor hiccup in an otherwise incredible sequence. Thanks for watching!
@@cinemaspeak4630 if you catch an explanation on rewatch and can find this comment again I'd love to. It's one if those things that i freakin hate that I caught, and really want someone to find the explanation that I can't.
is a lust of your favourite criterion independent of your favourite movies right? Criterion do had great selction and the covers and booklets are awesome. They are getting lazy lately. I mean earlier works are better. I recently acquire some good ones including Rififi and i was vastly disappointed in how some early covers and works are better done. Not a fan of the random plastique cover, prefer the cardboard or paper material made ones. I will say mines are the War Rossellini trilogy, Bicycle Thieves, Orphee (1950), Seven Samurai and Jean Vigo collection are my favourite Criterion B-Ray i own
I wasn't the biggest fan of Bottle Rocket (although it's way better than Isle of Dogs and Darjeeling Limited, which I hated). Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, and Grand Budapest Hotel are my 3 favorite Anderson films. I'm pumped for The French Dispatch, as it looks similar to GBH. Videodrome, like Scanners, just makes me sleepy. The Brood is the Cronenberg in the Collection that I enjoy. Other favorites of mine from him are The Fly, and A History of Violence. Those films are 8 or 9 out of 10 for me! Rififi is a great movie. In Whiplash, it's one of the films the main character and his dad go to see in the theater. Mulholland Drive is maybe Lynch's best film. Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man are two other fantastic films. I however, did not care for Lost Highway. Some of the Lynchian elements were there, but they didn't "click" like they did with MD. I own 12 Angry Men, but have only seen it once about 8 years ago. I need to rewatch! The Before Trilogy is good. I enjoy anything Ethan Hawke is in (Boyhood, The Purge, Predestination, Daybreakers, Explorers, Dead Poet's Society, Gattaca, The Magnificent Seven, Sinister, Taking Lives, and Valerian).
Fantastic Mr. Fox is probably my favorite Wes Anderson movie, I easily could have picked that for my Criterion recommendation. And it sounds like it’s time to rewatch 12 Angry Men!
Good list... I liked the video JUST for Mulholland Drive... LOVE THAT MOVIE... check out Memories of Murder on the criterion collection its a Bong Joon-Ho classic.
Hmmm... I own the Godzilla box set. It sucks! The disk I got it for did not work, and Criterion refused to send me a replacement (with out updating the firm where in my REGION FREE Blu-Ray player! I should have lied, and gone to hell for the original Godzilla V. King Kong special disk) 1. Hidden Fortress 2. La'Vventura 3. Sanjuro 4. Yojimbo 5. Playtime 6. Jaques Tati Box Set (w/different colored Playtime...) 7. Show Boat (w/Paul Robison) 8. Rashomon 9. 7 Samurai 10. Le Samurai
You might wanna do a little more research first The worst was saying ‘land of milk and honey’ is about circus performers. 🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽 Sidenote, totally bizarre preferring the awful mass production plastic boxes to those gorgeous cardboard releases. Maybe just look after your stuff better lol..clearly don’t own vinyl. And did you not think the before series artwork might be referencing the later rotoscoped stuff? Anyhow they’re gorgeous and the style evokes the themes within. I can look at the cover art and get flashbacks to the emotions contained within the films.
First Iron rule of Criterion Collection recommendation lists: talk about 12 Angry Men (you're the 7th UA-camr I've seen highlight it; funny how everyone ignores the many Italian movies, except for maybe Bicycle Thieves ... e.g. Christ Stopped at Eboli is a great relatively recent release that nobody has talked about); Second Iron rule: Don't look up the title/name pronunciations beforehand, even of things you own, so you might look a little less foolish when talking about them. On a far more positive note: Great video overall and a wholehearted thumbs-up for the Pierre Etaix, the French clown-ish filmmaker who's not Jacques Tati, recommendation (quel dommage, I own everything you've highlighted, so it's nice to know that we share the same wonderful taste)
I love the fart sound fx for the Before Trilogy artwork!😂😂👌🏻
