Before the building became The Standard in 1999 it was an "Old Folks" home for many years, now it's closing. The famed "Hyatt on Sunset" became the Andaz Hotel and is still going strong.
The cultural danger I see to the Sunset Strip is that it will undergo the same transformation as Times Square in New York City did, that it will entirely cater to tourists. Imagine The Standard being replaced by an M&M Store-three floors of just freakin’ M&Ms, yes really, the candy, not making this up, in the heart of Times Square-and a Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant-another tourist trap based on a fictional business that has absolutely nothing to do with NYC or its history. When I was a little kid, Times Square was pretty much like the Sunset Strip is now, gloriously dirty, a bit dangerous if you walked around with a map in your hand and a camera hanging from your neck; a sexy, gritty adventure even if you just drove through it; and now it’s a freakin’ Disneyland village-very family friendly, not the least bit like the place F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote about. Sure, it’s booming, for big corporate franchises. Is that what you want? Do you want the Sunset Strip to be like going to City Walk or The Grove?

To be honest this is sad people are losing their businesses because of governments shut downs and putting people out of business. Imagine if they shut down all realtors and buying and selling homes and you had to stay put this guy would be crying. Why not interview the owner of the standard and see how they feel and what they have to say. Instead of this clown who is not negatively impacted.
Wow they raised the rent on these guys. Clearly someone is getting a better deal in this market. Most markets are not like this. Who ever is willing to pay for more rent that now better be a smart investor
As a fellow toker myself, I'm all for more dispensaries. My only concern is regarding how much longer us pot heads can afford to keep purchasing. I certainly don't buy nearly as often, or buy as much as I'd really like to.
If the hotel met the standards of hygiene, then there is no reason to close it. Angelinos and tourists shall use places with a low level of hygiene now.
