That's a huge tip for Nikon Z folks (other systems too?) - disabling the manual focus override while in autofocus. Either disable the ring, or turn off the feature in AF Custom Settings. Just use the switch on the lens instead, or the AF Mode setting. Especially for the Z lenses with larger focus rings (all the 1.8 S lenses for example).

I am a pro photographer and this lens is very much for me too, cause I need it for my hiking and biking trips, when carrying or mounting a large tele lens is not an option. Yeah, I was bit disappointed when I saw that it is f/8 (and already at 200mm), cause I was hoping it will be f/6.3 lens, but for such a range in such a small body it was bit unrealistic to expect f/6.3. All in all it seams like a good lens and it probably replaces 24-200mm f/4 as the first lens I'll buy when I finally switch to Z 🤷♂
I totally hear you on the hiking. I was so excited because I take my F-mount 28-300 f/3.5-6.3 in situations like that. I was so excited that there might be a Z-mount replacement that would give me a bit of extra reach for birds. But f/8 is rough in trees & shade.

I received my order within a week of placing it through NPS, and I’m quite impressed with the lens. The only minor inconvenience is that I had to purchase a larger backpack to accommodate its size. LOL 😂 Although, maybe not an inconvenience because it was an excuse to buy another bag (Shimoda for the win). :) Regarding performance, I’ve noticed that using a 2X teleconverter significantly reduces image quality with non-S-Line lenses, more so than when used with my S-Line lenses. Consequently, I’ve found that while S-Line lenses work well with teleconverters, it’s preferable to crop images in post-production for non-S-Line lenses like this 180-600. Initially, I was excited about using my 2X teleconverter in DX mode, which theoretically extends the reach to 1800mm. However, my tests consistently show that shooting at 600mm and cropping later yields sharper results.
@@MichaelSeneschal , good information thanks. I use my Nikon Z 180-600 with the 1.4 teleconverter and the results are great. After reading up on the 2x teleconverter it seemed like the 1.4 was the better match for me. Once again thanks for that info.

And not just exposure, you won't get great skin tone with F8, that I promise you
@@hotrod4x5I’m curious from people who have actually done the comparison though! The RX10 IV is sharper than superzoom lenses on APS-C Canon DSLRs or mirrorless ILCs. I’ve done the comparisons.
I do love Nikon products. But I find my Tamron 18-400 a better choice for me. Compare F 6.3 to F 8 and that's for me. I use it on my Nikon Z 7 ll with the FTZ adapter.
I love my Tamron 18-400 for my crop sensor Z50 ... but the 'snappiness' of native Z mount lenses is drool worthy. A swap to this one causes me to lose my wide angle a bit, but will give me that much more reach. The 6.3 to 8 does give me pause.
This would be a great lens for travel when changing lenses is difficult. An example is on a whale watching tour on a rocking boat where it is hard to predict where the whales will be. You wouldn't have to worry about changing lenses in choppy waters and missing the shot. Bokeh is also not important for whale watching tours. A question: Can your ProPack presets be used in Adobe Camera RAW as well as Adobe Lightroom?
100% agree although external zooms I always worry about a bit in the wet so would definitely have a cover on. Would have loved to take this in the zodiak in Svalbard or Antarctica. The other place would be dusty hiking like in Nepal where you really want something light but versatile because you don't really want to be changing lenses all the time with the dust.
If the lens is more likely to be used on one of the smaller Z cameras that's what it should be tested on. All the reviewers are using it on Z9, it would be more interesting to see review on lower model
The 45mp sensor allow to see even the smallest defect, and the fast AF allows to test the lens to its limits, to test technical performance of a lens, always use the best body possible. To test its everyday usability, test it on the body it is meant to be on.
perhaps a dumb question. I see your focus point go from red to green in AF-C mode. I don't think mine ever changes from red on my z6ii. Am I missing a setting ??
As always great video and review. I have the z24-200. I can always crop and get to the 400 range if I need to. Also, I maintain the 6.3 vs 8.0, and a smaller form factor. I think I'll stay put with what I already have.
But you can crop to get even more range with this lens. If you don't need it you don't need it but it's great for people that will use the long end a lot like me.
And for even seasoned pros who need something lightweight and versatile. Where weight and size must be at a minimum like hiking or other tight situations where you need range in a single body and lens because a full bag of gear just isn't an option. Yes, you give up separation, but you still get the shot.
This would definitely be better to get used when it's a little cheaper, but for what it is it looks like a pretty decent lens to be fair. Would be great for most outdoor uses with fairly good lighting.
Solid review. Pairing it with a Z6 II would have made it even more realistic for the most likely uses. This lens is finally an option for professionals that need a lightweight 200-400/f8 every once in a blue/yellow/red moon who use shorter focal lengths otherwise.
Your prime comparison is apples and oranges in terms of scene. If you are taking a picture with a specific intent, you use the right lens, prime. If you are attempting to capture distance and movement, well...prime is out the door, you must use the zoom and give up what the prime offers. It's that simple.
I have my 18-300 mm Tamron, which is really good for a superzoom, although the flexibility of having a fullframe lens, and the extra 100mm, makes it a very tempting lens...
One looks like a field hockey but modified and the other looks like a lawn tennis but with table tennis like bat also modified . Never seen this kind sports before.

A few years ago, I bought the 18-400 zoom from Tamron. The focus breathing was horrid, barely reaching 300 mm on our backyard bird feeders, at a distance of about 20 feet. While I'm sure it would have reached 400 mm at infinity, I already had a 300 mm lens for closer distances. So I traded it in for the Tamron 100-400, which had virtually no focus breathing at the same distance. Given the variability, I really don't understand why reviewers (and manufacturers) don't provide specs for focus breathing, which is often substantial for these long telephotos. Even a qualitative assessment would be helpful e.g. the viewfinder view as the focus distance decreases from infinity, which shows shrinkage with focus breathing.
Yes, most people don’t realize how much focal length breathing there is with the DSLR superzoom lenses. I’m very curious from people who have used this lens if there is focal length breathing. Can anyone here answer? The only very sharp superzoom option with minimal focal length breathing that I’ve used is the Sony RX10 IV.

Wondering about this on my wife's Z30 (no IBIS). It would be a 42 to 600 I guess.
the best part of the lens is its hood
I'm starting to doubt my decision to move from my old Nikon D70.. to the Fuji X-T5.. I have watched your videos on ice hockey.. because there just are not that many out there.. Shooting hockey sucks horribly, although I have been able to get decent results with the X-T5 and the 55-140mm F2.8, but still have to crank the ISO.....
Great Review Jared. Just got my copy. Excellent Travel, Hiking, Backpacking, Family Lens with a Zf!
Still need Bird Detection on the Zf Nikon!!!
Demo it with the Zfc please!
Would I be wrong by saying that this would be awesome for weddings, paired with a Z8 or Z9, set the aperture to F8 and Go.
I would never use a lens this slow at a wedding. We're trying to deliver quality portraits, with nice blurred backgrounds. And you're not gonna get that with this lens.
Wedding at F8 with over 10k ISO? You ain't getting paid unless you AI denoise every single freaking one of your photos
@@Duskbleu so no outdoor weddings, no daytime weddings with lots of windows?
don't pro's shoot with more than one lens and/or Body? I'm not saying you are wrong but I don't see how this could not be an option when paired with the bodies I mentioned and only with the bodies I mentioned.
@@JandRstudios the sole benefit of zoom over prime is flexibility. I'm sorry you can make that argument with F4, but with F8 you can't. If there's a shade, you ain't getting paid, if its overcast you ain't getting paid. IQ aside, the aperture of this lens is so low you don't have margin of error. And not just exposure, you won't get great skin tone with F8, that I promise you
how does the image quality compare to the rx10 iv?
Apples to oranges comparison. The RX body has a very small sensor. It's not even in the same league as a DX camera, let alone a full frame body.
The IQ is actually really good. Might also be a good option for Video Journalists.
I figured this lens would be popular among the nature nerds. Are the Fropacks cubes?
I have to say skitles is my favorite one for my daughters soccer pictures i take .. great vide as always
To counter the variable aperture just shoot in auto IOS and you should be okay.
@@kingdomofashes Completely agree!
This lens will sell very well!
Any updates if the 50 400 from tamron will come to nikon?
If the lens is more likely to be used on one of the smaller Z cameras that's what it should be tested on. All the reviewers are using it on Z9, it would be more interesting to see review on lower model
The 45mp sensor allow to see even the smallest defect, and the fast AF allows to test the lens to its limits, to test technical performance of a lens, always use the best body possible. To test its everyday usability, test it on the body it is meant to be on.
Thanx for the review, will it work with a teleconverter?
no
perhaps a dumb question.
:) I laughed when you said it’s a grower not a shower. BH or Adorama wont make those jokes. LOL Fun times, gotta love the UA-cams. :)
Don’t have one.
@@froknowsphoto and why would you if you have a Z9 =)
great show as always....the zoom in to the logo on the wall was incredible. Really great example of what the zoom can do
Outstanding
Your prime comparison is apples and oranges in terms of scene. If you are taking a picture with a specific intent, you use the right lens, prime. If you are attempting to capture distance and movement, well...prime is out the door, you must use the zoom and give up what the prime offers. It's that simple.
Great photographs, Jared.
Jared you used to post and load albums of your various shoots on your website. Do you still post various Albums ? I cant seem to locate them if so
this is a street and architecture and abstract lens written all over it
I'm a Nikon and Sony fan. ❤
I'd love to have something like this for my E-mount.
I have my 18-300 mm Tamron, which is really good for a superzoom, although the flexibility of having a fullframe lens, and the extra 100mm, makes it a very tempting lens...
@@GemmaHentschindeed. But the 18-300 is for apsc
@@GemmaHentsch I have a G 70 to 350 ff lens already. But on my APS-C, I would like to have a little more room on each end of the range.
@@oz5wob3 I did consider that route, but I thought I’d rather have a super zoom lens (and I already had the 100-400 sigma)
One looks like a field hockey but modified and the other looks like a lawn tennis but with table tennis like bat also modified . Never seen this kind sports before.
pickleball
great review, looking forward to your next
"Shut up and shoot". Love it Fro!!!!!
hey Jared, I'm starting up my own youtube channel hopefully soon, and I'd like to do something similar to what you're doing with showing the live feed from the EVF and have the photos pop up. but I can't figure out how to do it, so, how do you do it?
He uses an Atmos
@hotrod4x5 this may be a dumb question but when using an atmos or other external monitor, can you still use the camera like normal (put your eye to the view finder and take photos like that? Or does the external monitor completely nullify looking through the viewfinder?
@@alexkilba1355it depends which camera you have. Nikons allow for you to look through evf too while recording but sony and canon don’t mirror our and require you to use the atomos screen to see
@@stepheneckert4006 I've got a nikon z50
@11:34 ...this is some wise advices more parents should know about!
This will be great for landscape :D
Give me a 24 70 2.8 and a 70 200 2.8 sorry old fashioned media photographer here. On a side note i do own a 28 300 vr that lens is tack sharp for a super zoom and it definitely depends on experience with your photo equipment great vids been watching since the beginning of your channel.
Reminds me of the Canon EF 28-300mm
Thanks for the review.

This is the perfect lens for mountaineering.
Great explanation for the lens target audience.
Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD + Z-adapter still works fine.
Not full frame though
Bwana (Boss) Jared do a Nikon Z8 setup guide..
Agreed a great lens
Momtographer lens
Someone said, that's a lot of lens.
I’m guessing that pickleball is a faster-growing sport the bowling, and more exciting
My god, everyone posted about this at the exact same minute. I even had sales emails from outlets the same time... lol.
That’s how an embargo works, all filmed or written in advance and scheduled to post automatically at the set time.
Sports photographers? What do you think????
Very good movie !
so many reviews on this lens, when are we ever going to see them in stock lol
