I went through this with my Speedmaster. I even bought knowing that the one I was buying was going to be discontinued. When the new one came out, I was jealous of the bracelet and the new movement, but as time went on it dawned on me that the Speedy I bought was the one I had lusted after for almost 20 years and the 1861/3 movement is a lot closer to the 321 and 861 than the new coaxial movement and I realized I'm very happy with my purchase. It's gone up in value 25% too, so that don't hurt, even I'm never gonna sell it. I'm looking a a 114270 and 214270 next week because I'm going to celebrate a new job. Can't miss a chance!

Beautiful watch! 36mm really is the right size, and the design is pretty much perfect. I purchased a 114270 (2001 model) just about two years ago - and had the same feelings as you when the 124270 just now came out. But my 114270 has already been through several important life events, and it was also purchased for a life milestone. So it has meaning beyond the sum of its parts. Personally - I also like the green lume better than the blue. :)

Unpopular opinion: i think the 5 digit era of Rolex (ok this is technically 6 digit but we all know its a 5 at heart) will be remembered in years to come as peak Rolex. Sure the new ones have better bracelets and clasps - but 5 digits were the last of the true tool pieces before everything got all hyped.

From a 214270 owner who is on "the list" for a 124270, this video made me smile and even chuckle, as I obsess over the same minutiae as you do. I tried on the new two-tone version (exhibition model) and loved the watch. It's a bit more curvaceous than the 114270 because the lugs curve down to the 19mm bracelet and seem a bit shorter, but make no mistake, it's an awesome watch.

That’s my second favorite Rolex you’re wearing (third favorite really, I love the 1016 more but…). I did buy my favorite Rolex a couple of years ago, not surprisingly maybe, it was the Oysterquartz. Early 90s, Roman numerals, excellent condition, 36mm, amazing on the wrist… Beautiful. And after a few months I couldn’t stop thinking about why I was walking around with a $5000+ time telling machine on my wrist. I like the little bit of wisdom of “I bought this to celebrate, not to sell” I wish I could wrap my mind around that. Great video. It made me ponder my watch collecting experience.

I love this video. You gotta love what you love. I have a 2001 14060m. It's one of those things how you hear about how boring submariners are, yada yada yada... But I don't like in NYC or LA. I don't encounter Rolexes everyday. Hell, probably not even every month. I notice them when I see someone wearing one out. I've owned ceramic bezel GMT and Subs, I owned a 39mm Explorer. They were all great. But this one is exactly what I was hoping for. I still feel like it's not in your face. It is subtle enough, because there is zero flash. The jangly bracelet makes it interesting and gives it a slightly more vintage feel, but I know it is modern enough where I don't have to worry about it. The older Rolexes have something that the newer ones don't (and sure, the new ones have a lot that the old ones don't. Maybe I'll get another new one some day.)

Fellow 114270 owner here. Depends on what you look in the Explorer but if you already have a name down for an OP36, then this is prolly the better 36mm Explorer for you imho.
    114270 plusses:
    - true vintage case feel
    - 3130 has a smoother lux feeling rotor thanks to the jeweled staff (albeit less durable when beaten)
    - 5 digit bracelet despite bring dainty is probably the most comfortable bracelet
    124270 plusses:
    - modern case feel like current OP36
    - lumed 369
    - more solid and modern bracelet
    - 70hr power reserve
In my case however I’m leaning slightly more to upgrading (undecided). Worst comes to worst u can put your name down for the new one to celebrate your 50th bday.

Congratulations!! I love my Explorer 114270!! The biggest visual difference that I can see is the 124270 has a slightly matte dial (same as the 214270 39mm) where the 114270 has that beautiful deep gloss black dial and in my opinion is far superior to the new one!! Enjoy your new watch and Happy Birthday!!!

I come back to this video of wisdom with my Black Bay 58 on wrist, and with my eyes wandering onto the newer Black Bay 54. Indeed an emergency hammer for my glass case of emotion.

I’m 40 next year and the new 2021 36mm Explorer is what I have asked for, hopefully I don’t need to wait for one in a year.

I wear a 38mm Seiko SARB033, currently going on 8 years with that watch. I've always wanted to own a 36mm Rolex Explorer. When I got the opportunity to wear a 36mm Explorer and compare it side-by-side with my SARB033, I found myself disappointed that the Explorer in person didn't look or feel substantially different from the SARB033. I ended up appreciating and enjoying wearing the SARB033 more after having done the side-by-side comparison.

The same thing happened to me. Got my 114270 in February after wanting and looking for one for a while. The new 36mm came out just now (i didn’t want the 39) and i just ordered the new 36 now... i will decide on which i keep, when i get the new one. Or keep both but wear the new one. The old one is in perfect condition.

You bought an interesting, historical as well as iconic time piece, congratulations on that ;-) But how could Rolex do that, simply go back to the 36mm case and on the other hand discontinue the 39mm? I do not share this approach, it was not the only way to go. However, the most important, I fully agree that buying a watch is done out of love and interest and not out of economic interest alone.

I've gone from being on the waitlist for the 39mm to the 36mm; figure my AD will contact me when it's a 41mm or whennever..

Great synopsis of what we go through! Your watch is beautiful, it looks great on you, you bond with it and love wearing it. That's all that counts. Enjoy it for another 40 years which is how long it will take to get the 124270 from an AD.

I was in the market for a 114270 and had an opportunity to purchase a 124270 from the AD so I did. Currently have a 126710BLRO and a Z blue milgauss.
A day with the 124270 and I realized it’s a classic Rolex in a modern body. It felt really substantial and I loved how it fit on my wrist but I had 2 main concerns with it. A. It had 19mm lugs, a watch like this begs to be worn on a NATO at times and this made it difficult to justify bracelet / strap swaps, it also made it look slightly dainty with the extremely tapered bracelet. B. It’s size for a sport model definitely resonates with me more so in a vintage / neo vintage form much more.
I’m not a flipper, but the remorse of the purchase made me put it up “for trade” on the grey market. I was offered enough for the watch from someone who wanted to buy it and it allowed me to get the 114270 essentially for free, so I took advantage of that and receive the watch Wednesday!

What are you using to shoot your film and how did you get that great shot of the video turning at 1:36? Was that editing or actually filmed that way?

I'm partially in the same mindset - bought my 114270 two years ago. I've been waiting on a OP Turquoise from the AD, asked them about the new Explorer and basically said the wait is going to take a while, even with some purchase history
