    Thanks again for another good video. I flew in a Cessna in the 60's and not since. I would love to get back in the air with one of these, but still out of my price range on retirement income. 😎

    Thanks to both Dennis and Bill for taking the time to explain this important subject. Some Pilots have already died NOT taking that training first. Like in that Challenger II accident @ Oakdale (027), last year. It's something that all pilots should consider if they transition down from GA aircraft to ultralights.

      It's more like experience though. The guy who died was my new hanger-home's EX-partner. I took his place in that hanger at Oakdale (027) with my Aerolite 103. The man had over 3 decades as a CFI but still didn't take the training and when something went wrong he wasn't prepared for it. "Blue skies & Tail-winds" to ya both!

    Was thinking of buying a Cessna 152. But like they say... it’s a lot more extra expenses. Ultralight is good for a weekend flyer!

    Enjoyed the video Bill.... is there any places near MS offering trike training? I have a Northwing ATF and searching for other pilots around the neighboring states that may can be of assistance... Aerolite 103 is next on my list..... then on to searching for a LongEz trade my old antique Harley for....

    Brother William, I deeply appreciate you having a great sense of humor even during interviews with manufacturers. To the question :
    I am interested in a two seater ( pilot and passenger alongside or in a row ) with capability landing in water as well ( equipped with floats/amphibious). Now, I want to refer to your level of expertise, should I go with CH II or Aerolite 103 ? I know CH II has another advantage, close cockpit. What is your take on the choice between the two ? Thanks.

    Got my PPL in the 80´s, flew mostly C150, Sundowner, etc. Just would like some tips on flying the 103, say vs. flying a 150. I really would like some info on this please.

    I flew fixed wing in the 80's and want to fly again but rental for a 152 is $150.00 plus per hour where I live. I now own a farm and my front pasture is long and flat enough for me to have a grass strip so the 103 is a great option for me now.

    about 1000 hrs in 140s 150s 152s and 172s. I have an appt to look at one local tomorrow afternoon that is for sale. zero time on it.. the transition into the 103 is what I'm concerned about. granted early morning and late afternoons are the best. but what are the major differences here. I can't imagine a 30 mph stall speed.

      It comes just as quickly as in a big plane when cruise is only 60 mph! The biggest problem you have to overcome are your own preconceived notions about flying one!

    I am not familiar with the 103. I am a former 172 private pilot. do they make a 2 seater? is so, sise by side or one in front?

    Hi, I live next to a small municipal airport because I wanted to take up flying in my older age. Well now I'm afraid I may not get there. I had a minor stroke in 2010 but have been fine since then. I am no longer able to work. Is there a ultra light plane that will accept a 500 lbs man? I want to fly but need a situation where no license is required. I was once an air traffic controller and held a VFR pilots license. I even have about 100 hours in a helicopter. Can you advise?

      William Whitley , I have seen many videos on UA-cam, particularly Challenger II, with two people on board. When you train someone in your CH II, I am sure you calculate the weight of two people, don’t you ? So, what is the gross payload on CH II ?
      Why this 500 lb former air traffic controller cannot be counted as two people on board ? Thanks for replying.

      RANS s-12 (2 seat)or S-14 (single). It is not technically an ultralight (E-LSA) You must get at least a 582 motor for your weight. You have the license. A medical is not necessary for flying LSAs.
      Anyway, the aircraft will handle your weight and if you need to make any mods for seating, you are welcome to do so.
      I obviously don't need to tell you where you can and can't fly,

    Anyone know if the Aerolite 103 operates safely with floats (I live on large lake)? Haven't seen any videos showing that.

      Daniel Taylor sounds like the hirth 50hp would run floats but might put it over the 103 weight regs

    I am interested in transition training. I know someone who is interested in selling their Aerolite with the Kawasaki. I see there is an EAA chapter at KCPT, I wonder if that would be a route to find an LSA two-seater for type transition training? The UL I am interested in is at TX46. To be honest, my wife isn't fond of the Aerolite, which she describes as "a lawn chair with a chainsaw engine strapped to it". Her words, not mine. She prefers me to look into the Aeromarine Merlin Lite or find a used Preceptor N3 Pup. Either way, I'm going to need training to convert my mindset to UL rules.
    By the way, do you UL pilots really fly the recommended pattern of only 500' AGL with turns inside of the standard pattern points? I've yet to understand how that's a benefit to anybody involved.

    How much weight can one of these carry? Because if you could mount a bicycle on it, you would not be restricted to the airstrips you fly to. You could cover a great distance flying a few hops. Then you could bike into town, check into a B&B, and continue across country the next day.

      About 250 to 350 lbs depend on the airframe and engine size. Dont want a small 50hp engine.

      @@lanrivers6066 my aerolite has the hirth 2702, 40hp and it has more than enough power and very reliable. but my weight is half of 350. i don't know if an aerolite can fly with a 359lb person. maybe with the 65hp, hks 700e (no longer produced) even on long-distance x-country trips. i can cruise all day at 63mph and on a 7 gal tank, i can cruise for 3.5hrs easily before heading in for fuel. i own lsa and ultralite aircraft, and i will not give up my 103, it's just too much fun. and because i fly long-distance (300miles/day) mine is rigged with a few extra bells and whistles for safer flying. it cost north of $36k and has the same instrumentation as my lsa, minus auto pilot. but you can get one for less than $15k and fly 15+miles from your home base and back again easily. on fall days you can cruise along @ 45mph seeing and smelling the adapted landscape.

      forget the bike it won't work. i take some dehydrated food, small light tarp, and a sleeping bag rolled tight into a bag and strap it on top of the fuel tank, is the way to go. fly camping at its best under the wing. and i'm 68 yrs young.

    I love the video here but ive got a few basic questions. I have flown before with a certified instructor in the right seat (about 2.5 logged hours.) And I absolutely love it. At least I did until I started pricing out small planes that I could afford and the maintenance, upkeep and inspections and fuel (8 to 12 gallons an hour! Are you kidding me?) And subsequently gave up the idea of flying. I thought about an ultralite but the pilots ive talked to all say........."Those damn thing's are very dangerous! Anyone who flys one of those thing's wont be flying for long! People die in those damn things all the time!"...........I figured oh well, I guess that's that but then I see you guys out there having so much fun in these planes regularly so let's have the straight scoop here. Whats the deal? I love flying and i understand that like anything else if you're doing something stupid, there's going to be a problem but are these planes reasonably safe without spending $30,000 bucks on one? Please help.

      Flying an ultralight requires more control precision than a Cessna 172. They do not fly themselves quite as easily. The low speeds and short takeoff distances make the process deceptively simple. It matters not if you are going half the speed as a cessna when you are only using one quarter of the runway space!

      Ive been a hang glider pilot scince 1978 . Flew some ga but stopped because of money and driving a car into the air and cost didnt appeal to me. I fly a quality
      soaring trike from north wing. Seriously i think it offers the safest flying out there . Why because your landing at bery forgoving speeds, you have option to go around . Mid field engine out np you can easily make a 217 deg yurn back and land or still land easily straight ahead. With sufficiant altitude you have a great deal of time to find a good lz. I also have a challenger 2 for my wife to fly with me. And it has simular characteristics as well as the aerolight 103 and others.
      The very truth is in anything you fly common ,sense good trainning good weather and flying within the placard specifications of any aircraft will give you many years of grat flying.

      Mario, thank you for your question. An Aerolite 103 is a single place (seat) aircraft. Therefore, you need to be the pilot to operate it.

    If I were to fly across a few states, where can I land for gasoline? Unlike James Bond, I cannot taxi up to a Chevron station, and airports do not have gasoline. What can I do?

      In theory you can fly into small untowered airports and get leaded gasoline. Pretty bad for the engine though.

      Looks like you can use Google maps to scout a gas station with an open field nearby. Or a dirt road you can set her down on then pull into a field.

    I think they created a great aircraft, with one huuuge deal breaker. No sport pilot wants a control yoke! You just give Cessna pilots a false sense of security and enable them to get killed easier.
    You mention conversion training in an appropriate aircraft but irresponsibly gloss over just how much dead flying this plane like a Cessna will get you.
