This was originally sung by Mukesh in the 1961 movie Saranga, with lyrics by Bharat Vyas and music by Sardar Malik.
I don't know much about music theory, but Varma ji always says that he loves Ragas with two Madhyams and the interplay between the two Madhyams in this song is one of the most beautiful ever.
