Interesting lecture. Patton's opinions and actions post war have as of late been brought to light. He was a war hero and without him you could make a case the war would have ended later. Years ago I wondered why didn't the allies just open the gates of the camps. There are 2 reasons why that did not happen. One being the level of disease in the camps and other medical reasons. A starved person needs to slowly reintroduce nutrition. Sadly many in the camps were on deaths door when the allies won. ALSO we were still at war for a few months more. My own country tried to deliver massive amounts of oils and fats but were refused. Patton was only doing what the Geneva Convention stipulated, until the allies removed the POW status. They were then able to use them as slave labour and strip them of any rights.

Interesting lecture. Patton's opinions and actions post war have as of late been brought to light. He was a war hero and without him you could make a case the war would have ended later. Years ago I wondered why didn't the allies just open the gates of the camps. There are 2 reasons why that did not happen. One being the level of disease in the camps and other medical reasons. A starved person needs to slowly reintroduce nutrition. Sadly many in the camps were on deaths door when the allies won. ALSO we were still at war for a few months more. Patton made a comment that in Germany being s Nazi was pretty much compulsory and not all that different from being a republican or democrat in the US. Btw Patton was a staunch Democrat. To a degree I understand his logic but not wholly. In the end his views on such things got him fired. The cold war was and is the reason for the policies re Nazis. Easy now to question those policies but putting yourself back at that time what else could have been done. The V2 technology was only partly to go to the moon. I'd say the larger part was nuclear delivery vehicles. Admittedly many of the people under paperclip had been involved in atrocities. The V2 itself killed many Britains. It's the end justifies the means. Ideal no. Practice to achieve our goals at the time probably yes. Also too where the prisoners could go was still an issue. Palestine was a British colony. There is a whole history there in the formation of Israel etc. It was very interesting that Israel didn't want most of the old Nazis. That would be an area I'd like to know more about.
