Great teaching strategies never get old, here we are 2019 and this is still relevant :-) Love the work Ruby Payne's done with Bridges out of Poverty, awesome stuff and miss Rita Pierson :-(
Great example of conversation styles and communicating with students. As a school psychologist, I would add that the teacher should follow up with questions about the student's health. Is there a legitimate reason the student might need more time in the restroom (e.g. gastrointestinal problems?) In this case, a visit to the school nurse may be warranted, or maybe a 504 is needed to allow the student more time in the restroom along with a plan to make up missed learning. Is the student searching through the trash for food because he/she can't afford lunch? Is the student sneaking to make a phone call because a family member is in crisis? I would just encourage teachers to think outside the box and follow up with some pertinent questions. This is how we prevent kids with needs from falling through the cracks.
Ruby Payne I've been studying your material and would really like a way to teach kids in poverty how to deal with teachers who don't get your training. We have a ministry to homeless kids and they need immediate problem solving devices so they don't keep getting caught in the same reactionary trap that these uninformed teachers provoke.
So great to see these ladies
