I love that he ripped this out back in 86!!! EVH was the total package. A master of all masters of his trade. He will for always be missed.
I'm 22 and I love Van Halen. Eddie definitely pioneered a lot of guitar techniques such as that 2-handed tapping that have been since carried on by people like theDooo. A lot of this performance seemed improvised, but parts of it were based in a few of Van Halen's instrumental songs like 316, Eruption and Cathedral.
This man started all this before it was even called tapping .
His tapping is insane because he practically invented it... although he didnt acctually he took tapping to the next level with this song... Rip Eddie
Actually got a first comment! Love your reactions, man! Also, I've played guitar for almost 25 years. The thing he does around the 10 min mark is him just tapping/hammering on with his left hand to make the string ring, but he's also spinning the volume knob on and off with his right hand for each note. Makes it sound almost like a violin.
Ya it was cool as hell
Exactly, most people don't catch that.
@@charlespeterson7502 the beauty of Cathedral.
Best part and nobody ever mentions it in reactions. Glad you brought it up
Eddie is his own genre. There was NOBODY like him when he hit. You have no idea how huge he was. He changed the guitar forever. A true, once in history master musician, not a rock star. A master. And, the guy never had a guitar lesson and couldn't read music. He was simply Eddie.
You are watching a legend my friend. Saw van Halen live 11 times, Eddie is over the top scary good guitarist.
Eddie = The King, ..... may he rest in peace.
That is why Eddie is the GOD of guitarist. He is and will always be the greatest that has ever been.
Eddie actually started out on drums. Brother Alex, guitar. Somehow, they switched. Worked for them. Worked for the whole world.
Rip eddie . Thanks for the respecteble reaction
Eddie's guitar was glued to his body 24/7! He played constantly everyday searching for sounds! It's well documented.
This is the KING! Long Live the King!!!!! NOBODY can do that.
Yes!! Thanks man, this reaction was great
Glad you enjoyed
Eddie was a huge influence on my guitar playing, Rock In Paradise to this legend, awesome reaction man, keep it going
This was my first time sitting in with you on a reaction, I'm so glad I chose this one as my first one! I absolutely loved your reaction! I'm a 65 year old lady and grew up with this stuff, it's nice seeing it all over again, through your eyes! I didn't really appreciate this or alot of music the first time around, I was working trying to raise my little family, so I didn't have time for concerts and I couldn't afford to buy music back then, so I listened to the radio and recorded things off of the radio!
It is so fun to watch peoples facial expressions as there brain tries to process it all . Eddie was the first at many new things and a true legend and KING of the hammer ons . I was lucky enough to catch Van Halen twice live in the 80,s and they were SO good ! Just awesome to see younger generations discover this man and his many talents .. RIP Eddie you will be missed Sir ! Great reaction !
The drummer is his brother. There's an interview with Eddie with the Smithsonian, explaining his life. It's a great watch
Great reaction! You just watched the greatest Rock and Roll guitar player that's ever lived! RIP Eddie. Will never be another.
Eddie really loved playing. In interviews he often said that he didn´t know how to explain what he did. He just loved to explore. He couldn´t read notes. (same genious like J. Hendrix) His son Wolfgang who is also a guitar player asked his dad "how do you do this" and Eddie just hopelessly shrugging his shoulders and going: Well, you just have to kind of do it like ..... this .... or that way ......🤣 He also wasn´t in it for the stardom - he´s been quoted in a CNN interview: "If you want to be a rockstar - go on, be one and enjoy being driven by a limousine driver who hasn´t got a clue where to go - lol, most of all, he was a lovely, humble guy.who brought joy to billions of music lovers during his lifetime.
The reaction videos of this eruption solo that have never seen or heard Ed are the best ones to watch..... I'm always smiling pre watch because they have no idea what they are in for.... Haha ! I love it
This never gets old man stg 🔥🔥
Older the grapes the sweeter the WINE, he was the BILLIE BAD ASS OF HARD ROCK. R I P, Eddie VanHalen.
I read as many comments as I could to make sure I wasnt repeating anything but The beginning of this where Eddie is sitting down is a piece called 316,It happens to be his sons birthday 3/16/91 and when his wife was pregnant he used to put a acoustic guitar on her belly and play that piece. After that is the start of Eruption and some good old noodling, then when the lights turn blue and he's doing the part where you asked if you could tap with just your left hand that is called hammer ons and pull offs and his right hand is moving the volume knob up and down to create volume swells. The effect he is using to get that echo effect is a Eventide H3000 harmonizer. After that is the beginning of the song Mean Streets and then more noodling and end parts of the song Eruption. I Absolutely Love Eddie's playing and had the Great fortune to see the band Live 16 times, not a day goes by that there isnt a Van Halen concert playing in my head...Miss Ya Ed...
I always get hype when you post. Thanks for helping me pass the time my bro! 😊
Always!
We love our EDDIE. I saw them, the first time, in 1979. One of the best concerts we went to. AND WE SAW THEM ALL. Eddie plays by ear. He was born to do this. He plays the keyboards. He is a true prodigy. He makes his guitars. He invented his sound, his tone. The brown sound. We knew how special he was back then. He just got better with time. LIKE HE WAS EVER BAD. Some of this is parts of songs, Eruption is his. He used it to warm up. He sure was special. Broke my heart my teenage crush passed away.
Omg you reacted to my suggestion :0 I get maybe I wasn’t the only one but that warms my heart 👍great content man love your stuff as always
The drummer is Eddie's brother Alex Van Halen, also an excellent musician. When Van Halen came out in the 70s it was unlike anything that anyone had heard before. Although tapping is common now, it wasn't then and Eddie had not only learned it, but took it to a whole different level. He is considered one of the rock guitar gods, and it is hard to find a rock guitarist today that doesn't list him as one of their influences.
loved this reaction to Eddie man, You just became one of my fav reaction channels as well. subbed!
Hell yah one of the greatest guitar solos of all time great reaction as usual
Rock on!
I saw this concert live as well as all their concerts from 1984- For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. If you want to see him listen to Sammy Hagar There's Only One Way To Rock and then watch it when Sammy joins the band in Live Without A Net. He is flying across the stage just playing solos in the background while Sammy plays rhythm on guitar.
I still remember seeing then in concert as a kid. It was WILD!
He's moving his mouth to the words of the song and the the music in his head. He plays with his whole soul
Eddies brother, Alex, is playing the drums. Your reaction was spot on. Eddie is the king of guitars in my opinion. And yes you can play the guitar by just pressing down on the strings, that is called a hammer on. You can hammer on and then pluck the string as you pull your finger off, and that's called a pull-off.
PASSED 40K! CONGRATS!
I saw him do Eruption in 1978 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and he was just as amazing at it then.
"That drummer is going to town."
That drummer is Eddie's brother, Alex Van Halen. Yes, the group is named after them.
I'm not a betting man but if I were, I'd wager that his guitars went to Heaven with him because he certainly played the Hell *out* of them.
Ever since I first heard Eruption on their debut album (I'm talkin' old-school vinyl record LP; yes, I'm *that* old) I get chills up my spine...And even today, same thing, every single time.
Eddie didn't invent the technique of "finger tapping" but he certainly mastered it.
Bro,
Eddie and his brother Alex ( drummer) started Van Halen in 75' w/ David Lee Roth.
Discovered by Gene simons of the band kiss. Eddie played the solo on Michael Jackson's ( Beat it ) back in the 80's . If you ask most of the greats that came after Eddie, to a person they will tell you that Eddie was the most influential guitarists in there life.
I was born in 66' I grew up on Jimmy, Stevie, b.b etc. Eddie is and always will be the greatest guitarists of my life! Keep Rock'n brother.☮
It almost sounds like he's playing multiple instruments at once. which is absurdly cool.
Ed's was an orchestrated piece that he did every show. Exactly the same way. A conglomeration of pieces from different solos and some extra stuff put together for his concert solo performance. I had a chance to see them during this tour twice within a week and he did the exact solo he is doing here. Sounded exactly the same both times as it does here. No other band is better at note for note album sounding live performances ...
Great reaction. You definitely picked up in all the important factors. This "Eruption" solo is actually a combination of various riffs and solos from well known VH songs, with portions of Eruption sprinkled in. Eruption is actually a monster 2+ minute guitar solo off their debut album that Eddie used as a warm up exercise, of all things. They put it on the album and the rest is history. It is one of the greatest guitar solos in rock. So, to answer your question, no it isn't 100% improv. I don't think that is because he couldn't improv the entire thing. However, that isn't necessarily what people pay money to see a band do. When folks go to a show, they want familiarity. So, even tho it's a solo, it's not just a 15 minute opportunity for the guitarist to show off, it's entertainment for the fans. You definitely want more Van Halen, you definitely want to check out the drummer (who happens to be Eddie's brother, Alex). He too is an absolute beast. Check out the official video for Hot for Teacher. The beginning has a great drum intro. So nice to see someone else pick up on Alex shining during the start of this solo. Another good choice is Unchained, live in 81. I think it's Oakland, CA. For both of those, you would catch VH with their original lead vocalist, David Lee Roth. That's a whole other can of worms.
So proud of my Dutch legend. im from the Netherlands too. And its so awesome to think that a fellow dutch man got so famous with music. also he named the guitar frankenstein, because the guitar is basicly made of many components of different guitars
no this is not the Frankensstrat !! this is the Kramer 5150
The legend is, this solo, or at least parts of it, was Eddies warm-up before the show until sombody said to him "Man, you GOTTA do this on stage!" The rest is history. RIP KIng Edward!
Ed is amazing
Rip King Edward. You are truly missed. Have to watch the song 5150 from the same concert live without a net.
Saw them Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens 80-81( blurry) ✌️💚 RIP Eddie
I've seen a few guitarists' solos of this era since I grew up then, and I tried teaching myself to play guitar by watching this video, Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, George Lynch... anyone whose playing I liked with videos I could find so I could crib their techniques. In all of their solos, it's usually a varying mix of riffs or tricks they're "known for"-- bits they've practiced for years and years, or even just "warm up exercises" that happen to sound really cool. Sometimes they're carefully planned in advance, other times they're cobbled together live, all based on the crowd reaction, or what they're feeling at the time. Some players even just start with a note picked mostly at random, or a riff they just whip off, and then spiral out from there-- Reb Beach and Paul Gilbert solos seem to be like that a lot. Eddie's always seemed a bit more planned, but never 100%-- more like "I'm gonna play this bit, which will lead into this bit.. take a break.. then maybe do these two parts, or this part, then those two parts... ".
God, that's a lot of words to say that solos run the whole spectrum, from carefully planned and even choreographed, to completely made up on the spot in front of the crowd-- it all depends on the guitarist's style.
The 🐐
“What is that?”
What everyone said back in the day 😀
So the Drummer is Eddie’s Older Brother. Eddie started on the drums and alex on guitar. But both were first trained on classical Piano.
One can only imagine how many hours of guitarplaying there is behind this solo
EVH may not have invented the double tap but with Eruption, he did perfect it. His personal sound did have a significant and lasting impact on rock guitar. He was a genius.
The drummer is his brother Alex Van Halen, listen to the into to Hot for Teacher, that's him playing the drums. If you want to hear the new kid on the block as far as upcoming guitarists look up Max Ostro.
RIP EDDIE!! He was the goat on the guitar 🎸 solo!! The drummer was his brother Alex. Alex has 4 bass drums and a tubular kit.
If you want to hear more of Alex Van Halens' drumming, listen to "Hot For Teacher". The opening drum riff is totally incredible. Some awesome guitar work by eddie as well. Of course David Lee Roth shows off and Michael Anthonys bass is rockin'.
✌🎸🤘🙏👍❤❤❤ great reaction!😁
Send1t my man, it would definitely be amazing to see Eddie play with the Dooo but unfortunately he passed away on the 6th of October 2020
Every guitar player I've ever known (myself included) has a repertoire of things they play regularly, or know how to play. For some it's 100, for others 10,000. We all get fairly decent at running through the riffs, and licks, and bits of songs. It's at least partially to show off, or to be entertaining anyway when you don't have a band to play with. That's quite a bit of what's happening here. There are likely some major landmarks that are pre-planned, and the rest is pretty open to whatever he feels like doing. Also, a big part of what he's doing is due to what he's done with his guitar and amp. The setup is honed to how he plays. Eddie was experimental, and would run different voltages to the amp than it was rated for (quite dangerous), and this created some amazing tones.
Van Halen was a legend for his guitar and we love your reactions. I’d suggest you watch grizzy fat moments because there are plenty of moments. I’d also recommend you listening to Mr Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra because it’s one of those really happy times to help in different ways.
Very nice reaction. It's nice to see when people expand their interest.
Another guitarist that is among the best and that's not just a personal belief, is Zakk Wylde.
You should react to... Black Label Society - In This River (Doom Troopin' Live)
Zakk was a close friend of fellow guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell of Pantera and dedicated the song "In This River" to Darrell after he was murdered on stage in 2004.
In the Eddie Van Halen video, you were wondering about him play the guitar one handed. Well Zakk does this in The River video while handing beers to the crowd with the other.
Eddie customized his guitar to scream like he wanted calling it his Frankenstein. I have my own Frankenstein that started as a Jackson guitar BUT I have modified the hell out of so it screams like Eddie wanted his to do. I wish I could went to NAMM when he was alive for to touch it and have him say to me (nice job kid), it made from 5 guitars. Like him, I will continue to make it better and better.
Drummer is Eddie's brother Alex Van Halen and he is a monster too
I was hoping you watched this after seeing The Doo toss it out in the last video you watched. This sis a few of his known solos and song techniques wrapped into one. But Sammy Hagar is a very humble guy. He came into this band after a bad break up from David Lee Roth and EVERYONE hated the idea. But he made them a better band and really put them into the mainstream. Hagar is a genuinely nice guy and handled them going back to David Lee Roth with a grace David Lee Roth wish he had on his best day.
Your reaction was my reaction, except I was ten or eleven the first time I saw this on vhs live without a net
Growing up with Eddie Van Halen, steve Vai, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Yngwie Malmsteen changed me forever honestly, Malmsteen is from Sweden and is absolutely amazing ( not to knock any of the names I mentioned)
Malmsteen is a great technical player with heavy classical influences but could never break into the mainstream because all his songs are instrumental without singing. I feel like once I heard one Malmsteen song, I heard 'em all. Not knocking him at all as a guitar player, but he lacked the ability to appeal to mainstream audiences. Eddie combined his virtuosity with the ability to write music that appeals to many different musical tastes, which makes him special among guitar gods.
remember i showed you that guitar on a stream one. It's called his 5150 striped series kramer, this one specifically is called the dougan guitar, name after his guitar tech. I'm guitarchitect btw
This solo has 3 parts: 1) Eruption 2) Cathedral and 3) Mean Streets. First saw VH on their very first tour -April, 1978, when I was in college. They backed up Montrose and Journey and played the entire 1st LP. Last time they ever played backup. Phenomenal time for music!
4)Spanish Fly
@@chrisw647 You are correct on that, Chris W.....
Starts out with 316
He is the one to introduce tapping to everyone!
If you wanna see some more super dope guitarists I'd definitely recommend checking out Jared Dines Shred Collab 2021. SO many incredibly talented people in that video. Also The Doooo is in it!
This. Listen to this great advice. The 2020 and 2021 shred collabs are mind blowing. Great reaction material.
As you can imagine, The Doo loves EVH. Also, RIP EVH.
One funny thing is that when he was playing this at this concert he was not only drunk af but also hilariously high on god only knows what drugs
The guitarist, Eddie Van Halen.
The drummer, Alex Van Halen.
Yeah, they're brothers.
the king of guitars
FIRST listen to the Album version of Eruption... and Eddie just riffs from that, his LIVE solos are different for each show and its bits and pieces from solos he's done before but mostly improvise.
Do check out Brian May's Brighton Rock solo live if you can ( he's the guitarist of Queen, and he built his guitar himself along with his dad because they didn't have money for it before they got famous. He still uses it as his main )
He was drunk AF while doing this aswell which is MAD IMPRESSIVE
Drummer is his brother . I got to see them in 1983 Houston
I was born in 1970, and I was 8 when Van Halen hit the scene. There is a term B.E. and A.E. (Before Eddie and After Eddie. There are g.o.a.t.s from B.E. and A.E but while he was in his prime (1978-1999) NOBODY, was close, and everyone was trying to play like him, or trying to play "punk" to rebel against being a good player.
Those scales he plays are not too difficult once practiced, the tapping is a little harder to develop (slightly, with tons of gain and volume), and he actually does make tons of little flubs all through this. But it is the attitude that counts. Plus his sense of melody, was amazing with all the effects.
Rip to the goat
Eddie played sections and done what he wanted within them
Hi man, just watch the whole concert "Live without a net" and you'll find also the drum solo by Alex Van Halen (his brother)
Eddie and Jimi. The GOAT
Yes this is a practiced performance. Like the lead singer said it's the favorite part of his show. There's actually another video where he's so drunk he messes it up so bad it's funny!!
It's pieces of different songs of his. Plus a bonus
The drummer is Eddie's brother Alex. Check out Yngwie Malmsteen he is a great guitarist.
Listen to their song Cathedral. btw thats his brother Alex on drums.
One other amazing factoid about.EVH. He built that guitar out parts from other guitars, looking for what he called The Brown Sound. The guitar is called Frankenstrat
Wrong. This guitar was made for him around 1982 83 by kramer, it's the kramer 5150
@@jeffdavis6715 unintetested. The point was to let the guys here know that the man built his iwn instruments
@@kenkonwick6660 then do it without lying to the man.
@@jeffdavis6715 still uninterested. I stand corrected of inaccuracy. Lying is different. Thats intentional this was not. Go back to your accuracy police job.
Guitarists can prep for solos like this and some do improv. Eddie is kinda doing both here. Eruption on the record is still very free-form, but not nearly as much here. Eddie doesn't do any of the famous licks from the Eruption solo on the record until a while into this video. you may want to check out the version on their first record.
He's all over the stage to prove he's not doing anything with his feet, pedals or anything. He couldn't afford that stuff when he learned to play. He did all the work
I’m sure you’ve heard Van Halen stuff you just never knew it was actually them. Example. Beat It solo section was done by Eddie.
There are some guitar virtuoso instrumentalists you have to check out. Steve Vai "For the Love of God" is an amazing song. and Joe Satriani "Surfing with the Alien"
Both emotional and technical players. Also, Eric Johnson "Cliffs of Dover" is extremely good
Most people never notice but Eddie is using the volume knob when you said he was just using his left hand.
BRO! Please watch Steve Vai's Teeth of the hydra. Eddie is king always but if you want your mind blown check out steve. Great reaction my guy.
Was at that show… Cow Palace - SF CA 1986.
You should definitely listen to Ain’t talking bout love by them
If you like when The Dooo does metal covers of hip hop songs, you will probably like G.O.A.T by Polyphia. Great fusion of metal and hip hop. Super sick song. And music video is dope
Eddie Van Halen learned his tapping from his dad who played the ukulele it was world renowned any did tapping on it look it up on UA-cam
That's not his father. He learned it from seeing Jimmy Page doing it in concert.
RIP Eddie
I am dating myself....I was there...off to the left near the end of the stage...23 years old...Connecticut, in 1986.......Peace!
It depends on the concert and person sometimes hehersl sometimes off the top of there heads!
In case you didn't know, that's Eddie's brother Alex on drums. RIP EVH
I have a feeling you'd like Stevie Rey Vaughn "little wing"(hope I spelled that right)
