SR20 Swapped Datsun 2000 Roadster is a Crazy Clean Weekend Thrasher

- Alvin from Z Car Garage has fine taste in a track car: a Datsun SR20 Roadster. And if you know us at all, you know we respect anyone who’s willing to put something this clean on a racetrack repeatedly. But to bring the vintage spec car up to modern handling standards, he popped in an N/A SR20 - and some real suspension engineering. All while retaining levels of cleanliness that we can barely fathom.

I believe, that the Datsun Roadsters didn't have "L" series engines. They had whatever the pre-Prince Datsuns had. The "L" series was inherited from Prince.
This is the kind of build I like, classy, simple and streetable that you can daily drive
"Nismo leaf springs"
There's a phrase you don't hear every day.
yeah, and therein lies the weakness; I've owned both a '67 Nissan Roadster (the hot version with the 2L Mikuni carbed engine) and a '71 240Z , and they were really a generation apart; the roadster's power was very peaky, (so he has a point in subbing the SR20) and the Zed's handling ran rings around it. Both great looking cars though, and loads of fun.
i have to google what nismo leaf spring is :D
I’ve never actually seen one of these before. I mean, I’ve seen them all the time on marketplace or, what’s left them. Never been able to see one in person or one this beautiful.
You never notice a particular car until you own one, then you see them everywhere.... That was my experience when I bought my 69 SRL2000 !
Best hoonigan channel far and away.
You guys have no idea how much I appreciate the support!
One of the nicest cars I've seen featured. Thank u Mr. Chen
currently working on rebuilding a 2000 with my grandpa. we're SO close to finishing it, and this video has me so excited to get her on the road. thank you.
Glad to see more 60's Japanese cars getting love. 2000's are an absolute fav of mine and, I wish I could get a hold of one in good shape.
Datsun used to make some really good looking cars back in the day
After it was balanced and blue-printed, ported and polished, my '69 Datsun 2000 put out 196 hp at 5500 and weighed 2100 lbs with me in it and a full tank of gas. WIcked fast.
I most definitely appreciate his honesty and ingenuity on this build
....now THAT'S a Sports Car...
...Fantastic Instrument Panel and Interior...
...I could listen to that engine rev over and over...
VVL is great. Had a 91 SER with a VVL. Loved that car. Went back to my honda roots
What a beauty! I love the stance on those rims, reminds me of a Sunbeam Tiger.
The only reason why I'm watching this is because I am thinking about getting one. I need to know more about these.
I had a 1969 Datsun 2000 as my first car. Red on Black. Love these things. This is a beautiful Datsun Roadster! Badass!
Datsun cars were everywhere in my younger days but I don't remember seeing that model. Probably it never reach my shores. Love that car. So classy.
I had one a loved mine the car was way ahead of its time , won so many trophies and what made it better when I went to shows there where 100s of Camaro's and just as many Mustangs and but only one Datsun 2000 roadster ( fairlady)
My compliments to Alvin! What an absolutely beautiful roadster. All of the modifications were carried out with a great deal of respect paid to the character of the car as it came from the factory. It shows in a sort of a "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts" kind of way. (The only shame here is that the hardtop was mounted - it should be top-down all the way on a beautiful day like the one you had for driving this car.)
Gotta love the roadsters, MG B, Datsun Fairlady, Honda S800, Triumph TR8 and Aston Martin Sprite
This is the most true-to-original restomod I've ever seen.
That is awesome! My first car, at 16, was a stock 1967.5 Datsun 1600 roadster (red with black interior), and I loved it! If I filled up the dinky gas tank, I could make it from the SF bay area to Los Angeles without having to stop.
good lord! insanely clean for 73/04' and tracked
What? No LS swap? Is it still happening? Awesome!
Awesome car!!
“Sounds like a RWD type R” ummm Larry Honda kinda already made one. 😂
It’s name has 2000 in it too.
Yeah he seemed a little spaced out in this video haha
Honda didnt make a type R s2000
What a fine specimen of my all time fave car! A classy "Fair" lady, indeed!
It would look even better, topless.😍
An absolute dream car
Thanks for saving my quarantine day..physical distancing make me sad..thanks larry..
You guys are doing a great job! 😃
I owned a 69 2000 SRL311 with the factory Mikuni/Solex “competition” package. One of the nascar shops in Charlotte built the original engine.... custom cam and lots of other mods. It was unbelievable...until it blew up. I wish I still had it.
I live in eastern canada, but i would still visit this garage if I came back to LA. A 240z is one of my most attainable dream cars, and I would love to have them work one one for me! Love that content too!
Yess I was hoping you'd feature Alvin's car as soon as you started posting Z-Car Garage features. Been following this awesome little roadster for years. Really love the work that Z-Car does.
If you spend more time with these guys it sounds like you will be buying a roadster, putting your SR20 in that and building a crazy L series for your Z 😁
Man full honesty here I'm kinda new to looking into classic Japanese cars. They made really gorgeous and frankly badass cars and trucks. Besides the obvious Skylines I've really fallen in love with the 70's Celtics both coupes and the fastback/hatch and the 60's-today Toyota and Datsun pickups but man these roadsters are so cool. I had a Sentra SE-R and these motors are awesome, I'd love to drive one in a RWD car
Lol, had one in the 70's, terrific little ride, I'm 6'4" 250, my bro, 6'3" 260.... Over the cars load limit, we were too wide for our shoulders to fit. Filled with sonoco blue for track day she was a winner.
Got to see this car in person at the Breakfast Club Rally which happens up North typically in my stomping grounds. This guy along with Daniel Wu's car. SO-DAMN-CLEAN.
Yesss perfect motor for the this car. N/A and all!! Loved it!!
That Roadster is perfection!
The platform for these little datsuns is ridiculous so much potential for a classic … so many options to go to other than that sr-20 ouuf
Beautiful car there. A nice combo of classic style and modern performance.
I think I saw this car at the Z Car Garage in San Jose on September 23, 2021 when we were looking at the new Z being showcased. I spent more time checking out the cool vintage Zs and this roadster than the new Z
懐かしいな。これだけ綺麗なフェアレディ2000zは日本でも見た事が無いよ!fantastic car!
I had a 66 Fairlady roadster. I really miss that car.
Beautiful inside and out. Absolutely love this car.
I grew up with cars like datsun and renault, this car looks amazing
Further confirmation that deep black with some tasteful chrome is the best exterior choice on just about anything
Great video. Even better car. I bet he gets tired of people bothering him to sell it.
Larry the quality that you are putting here it's amazing, I'm really digging all the content, every single video, keep it like that, you're in the right way!
PD: Could you consider using a chest-mount for the GoPro in the drives? I think its gonna pop up the car more
I think I need to use a neck mount for some of these drives.
@@larrychen5678 That would be good too! hope it doesn't get uncomfortable
I have a 1972 datsun 510, but the 2000 is my favorite!!
a real gem
Love the sound and response of the engine
I had a nice 67 1/2 2000 (1 of 500) in Red. Yours is one Beautiful car man! Super jellz he got to driver her!
Keep these bad boys coming larry!!!
What a chill dude. It's probably very pleasant to have conversations with.
Great video! I have to get one of these someday. I had a friend who had one years ago and he let me drive it a lot. It was a super fun car. Sort of a muscle car version of an MGB.
Beautiful car. Thank you Larry, as always epic Datsun...
That is amazing. So clean. One of my favorites from Japan.
Just when Saturday started dragging Larry came to the rescue. Great stuff.
Awesome car and the fact that is gets good mpg it huge plus .
I LOVED how he called it sears point! Fuck infinion!
Never seen this magnificent car, japanese oldtimer are many unknows
Love the throatiness. Miss my dual overhead naturally aspirated 4.
Back in the early days of Datsun in Japan, they made Austin cars under licence. This is why the Datsun A Series engine looks like a A Series BMC engine you see in a Classic Mini, as it is a re-engineer of that engine. There is a lot of MGB styling ques in the Datsun Fairlady, because of the tie up.
I've been looking and still looking for one of these Beautiful Cars but can't. This would be a nice retirement vehicle for those slow days, Wink Wink...
1600 datsun fairlady.
1967
Most fun car i ever owned
What a gem 💎
Very very beautiful car...
Alvin has the “Car” as an owner of a 75 2002 this car would be my 2nd choice to own !
gorgeous build , amazing
Why's this one of the most beautiful classic car I've ever seen? wow!
I love it, I need to get back to work so I can buy more cars and parts!!!🙏🏼🙏🏼
After I get my finances set in stone and can afford to put some aside, I'll be scoping out a fairlady 1600 and I'd want a build very similar to this. Very subtle but modernized. Basically the ideal date car.
Would be interesting to see how this compares to Gingium's Datsun 2000 roadster with an NA Miata 1.6 engine in it. It's built to a higher spec as this beautiful car but would make for an interesting comparison nonetheless. After this pandemic is all over, I reckon some of the guys from Hoonigan, maybe Louis also, seeing as he's a Subie guy, should definitely take a trip up to Chicago to visit Caleb sometime this year, see his collection of cool projects. Would make for a cool VHS.
While the gingium datsun is very cool, this one is a bit nicer and built to a higher quality spec, and the 2l all alloy nissan engine is a far better choice than a cast iron block 1.8 mazda.
There's one in Houston with a KA24DE. It's a rocket with all of that torque.
SR sounds awesome
Very nice indeed, the wheels just make it.
Unknow splendid car never sold in europe 💕💕💕💕😎😎😎😎
BEAUTIFUL!!! 😳
these videos make me feel like nissan is my favourite car brand
@6:15 when the camera angle changes and you can see the 240z in the background 😍
Actually there were 3 models 1500, 1600 & 2000 all with twin carbys. Also had hi & low windscreen versions. Stock steering wheel was much bigger to give leverage due to no power steering. I own a 1500 but really need to get it back running again.
Gorgeous 2liter!
That's a good looking Nonda 👌
QR engines, half the weight.
Gorgeous build. Love the car.
NICE!!! Stay well... enjoy the ride
Looks better than an MG
My dream is a 60s/70s era jdm small car with modern swap. But yeah only going up in price
I love this car
There is an Autech S15 that came with a tuned NA SR20 making about 220HP would be good fun in this
That's done right! Love it
I liked that he called Infineon Raceway by it's proper name- Sears Point.
Used to race a 1600 back in the early '70s.
What a gorgeous car 👌🔥🔥🔥
Omg Modesto! I live 15 min from there haha lots of cool old JDM stuff in the valley! Saw a 2000 roadster in Turlock CA on my way to work in my MR2 Friday! Small world ✌🏼
Very tasteful, I love it. 👍🏻
Beautiful
Great episode, Larry. What a cool roadster! When are we going to see an updated "Ole orange Bang!" AutoFocus?
WORK OF ART (Does it have a Name?)
Beautiful car
It's so cool! this might be my next project!
I ended up finding one of these around the Midwest area for like 3500. I was ashamed I didn't have that cash at the time. It would've been a great starter hot rod.
