- With the release of Splatoon 3 Side Order this month, I decided to replay Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion, this is the video that got made out of that footage, I go through my thoughts of Octo Expansion after all these years
I procrastinated this video a lot but I'm happy I finally got it out in the end

16:31 fun fact: in the update _immediately after_ octo expansion, there was a balance patch that nerfed/reworked autobombs. Their explosion radius was reduced by 7% and they lost 1.5 seconds of tracking time, and to compensate their ink consumption was reduced from the 70% that other bombs cost to 55% like it is today. And then in 3, their radius was reduced even further by another 12%.
Inner agent 3 did not get these nerfs, and agent 3 has a bottomless ink tank so the ink consumption doesn't even matter. So there you go lol. Agent 3's autobombs are literally just built different, with a lethal blast radius that pretty much matches that of splat bombs in 3.

@@ghastlysaki I never gave it much thought myself before, but the moment you mentioned autobombs from hell I remembered the rework and got curious. Checked to see when it happened and there it was: 3.2.0 we see auto bombs get nerfed and 3.1.0 is octo expansion, just one month earlier.
It's kinda funny how the nerfs retroactively made the fight feel harder than it should be.
Same thing happens in Hero Mode. Sting Ray and Tenta Missiles got a MASSIVE rework, with the ray being faster in motion and showing a new graphics/damage, where missiles got a massive speed boost when launched, instead of just...staying still for five seconds.
@@andreaquadrati Ray didn't get a tracking speed increase, only AoE and damage nerfs. Missiles also got extra missiles when fired at fewer targets in addition to its faster firing speed.

And based on the way the alterna campaign plays, Nintendo knew they had a good thing on their hands with octo expansion.
i think you're just cracked at splatoon? the fact that your movement speed gets slowed down during the inner agent 3 fight always gets me
Slower movement speed? This is the first time I've heard of this. The only time your movement speed gets slowed down is when your armour is broken.
Something I loved about the Octo Expansion was the relationship of Marina and Pearl, like, it felt a bit of absent at the story mode so...

It saddens me how much better the story of this game is than Side Order.
I mean is a rogue like dlc they can’t put that much into it. But yeah the story was limited. But hey the gameplay in my opinion is more fun than OE and gameplay comes first so side order is my new favourite dlc

I too was disappointed by the story of Side Order (especially since it featured my favorite idol group) - but at the same time, I do think its grindy roguelite gameplay loop did justify a more limited format. Still, there was so much more they could've done story-wise with the concept of going through the same thing over and over again.
@@knottednumber That's not the point - the point is that Side Order's roguelite format makes it more viable to tell a limited story. It obviously doesn't mean that you can ONLY tell limited stories through that genre (plenty of roguelite games have very complex narratives), but considering how meaty and substantial the gameplay loop of a roguelike is, it more easily allows for a simple story.
Also, Dark Souls isn't a roguelite, it's a roguelike.
As someone who speedruns this campaign, it's absolutely my favorite campaign in terms of casual playthrough, and as a speedgame. With the fastest route focusing a lot on the I and J lines, it's arguably the hardest Any% we have in the series, and I absolutely love it for that. The escape sequence is also so well done, perfectly building up tension not only in story, but also in phase difficulty (minus Agent 3). I really hope Side Order hits just as hard as this campaign does.
1:48 Pretty sure this is based off the Sanitized ink you find in the final levels, in which Octarians keep getting submerged most likley to fully Sanitise them. While 8 didn't get to that stage yet it was probably just q creative way to hint at something being off

After playing side order I can say that nothing will beat octo expansion. Side order is fun but its missing the whole vibe that octo expansion has. Plus I’m not a big fan of the music they choose for side order but thats just my opnion.
Acht is German! You can search up the pronunciation pretty easily as I do not feel confident enough explaining the pronounciation

It’s speculated the player customize menu takes place in the “Belly Phase” of the escape. It features octarians in cases being passed thru a similar green ooze. It’s believed this is where sanitation takes place. So Agent 8 narrowly escaped falling victim, but not without side effects. Which is why they don’t have their memories, being collected as mem-cakes! (The Japanese name for this phase is also called the “Stomach Disinfection Site”.)
I haven't played Splatoon 1's story mode but I have played the others and I think that Octo Expansion is probably my favortite out of them all, still excited to see if side order overtakes it
Personally i dont think that it will top octo expansion but it has a pretty good chance to be second place

sider order docent look anything like onto expansion and I love that, I feel like splat 3's story mod took mostly all the mid or bad from octo so im hoping at some point we get an octo-esk deep cut dlc (I really want to see more of deep cuts aesthetic)
In 2018 I was 10, I finished octo expansion with 26k in dept and skipped the majority of levels, yesterday I thought to replay it and now I'm trying to do the inner agent 3 fight

I played it for the first time a month ago after getting back into Splatoon and *damn* is it good. The music, the challenge, the level design, the atmosphere, the environmental storytelling, the twisted lore... I love it! Definitely peak Splatoon.
When it comes to side order. I have expectations. I don’t want this to have wasted potential. Octo expansion on the other hand. It was basically what got me into Splatoon in the first place! I went in wanting an Octoling and got out with the best story I ever seen in a kids game with an Octoling as a bonus! The only thing I want Side order to have from Octo Expansion is dark and grim aspects like Octo Expansion did with the sanitized. (And unique challenges I liked them in Octo Expansion)
Edit: Just finished Side Order and I gotta say it’s a mixed bag for me. I mean I like the fact that it was kinda like a sequel to OE and that Marina is actually doing something about the sanitization! But I feel like it could be *More* ya know… It feels like there’s something missing
Acht is actually german for 8, which I think is a cool detail, because she made the music for the octo expansion and is an oktoling (okt = eight (I think Latin or Greek)). I think it’s kinda sad though that her name is “ahato” in German. Could maybe also be 8 in Japanese or some, but it would definitely be sad if the name had lost its meaning.

this was a great watch im glad it did well! it made me realize how good octo expansion is on the first playthrough and nastolgia for 2018 i subscribed

I was replaying octo expansion a little while back and I was so shocked when I did the inkjet level and saw how fast the inkjet is compared to 3
I remember doing the secret boss for first time and taking 173 attempts to defeat (im not joking, i was literally counting them as I died). Skill issue? Absolutely

I feel I definitely have a unique perspective when it comes to the Splatoon Campaigns. I played 1 on launch and obviously did Hero mode, early on. But, when 2 launched I played Hero Mode 2 for the first world, got bored, and never returned to it. Also, I never got into 2's multiplayer after being a little burnt out from 1's, so I never stuck around in 2. Until 3 came out and I was back in, and only went back to finish single player Splatoon 2 stuff sometime after Side Order was announced for March 2024.
So, I played the campaigns in the order Hero Mode --> Alterna --> Hero Mode II --> Octo Expansion. I definitely see why people love Octo Expansion.....Bu~t I think I prefer Alterna. I still loved Octo and I think every campaign had pros and cons (Except maybe Hero Mode 2. I wasn't a big fan of Hero Mode 2). I'll just simply say I prefer the experience of Alterna more than Octo Expansion. I felt excited to make it to a new island in Alterna and explore the environments and make progress. But, with Octo Expansion I felt more like "I hope the next level on this line is fun. ANOTHER 8-BALL LEVEL?" (Also, I agree that 8-Ball isn't that bad. But, I definitely got tired of them really quickly.)
I also pefer alterna, mainly bc it has the squid sist-

It's _possible_ to Splashdown Cancel Inner Agent 3, as I managed to do so a week or two back, you just have to make sure they're like... Two to three hits away from defeat or you're DEFINITELY going to lose
