Ian Paice is self taught. He started playing drums at 15 played in his dads Big Band and joined Deep Purple at 19. He is about 22 in this clip. Influenced by Buddy Rich & Gene Krupa. He is an incredible drummer 🥁
The only drummer I know who can get a 64-beat bass drum roll using one pedal. Started leanring the drums around his 16th birthday. Prior to that he was a violinist in his father's orchestra. At the age of 19, on Deep Purple's first album, Ian was already establishing himself as one of the world's best drummer. Mandrake Root showcases Ian's talent.
When I first heard Ian back in 1972 I was hooked. From that moment on I was a Drummer and have been for 50 years. I still hope to meet him some day and thank him for inspiring me to a life long journey.
Yes you are right he is one of the most brilliant drummers with a left handed playing setup, but the godfather of left handed drummers in my opinion is Hub Jansen (1937-2008). I am sending you a link to it, I guess you will be pleasantly surprised!ua-cam.com/video/rCJCiy3Vl6Y/v-deo.html
An underrated drummer - Ian Paice on the drums - Yeah - I was at the concert 1972 in KB hallen Copenhagen. 4 months before the recording of Made in Japan. Those were amazing :D
That solo was a good place to start, but check out the fills he puts into the Deep Purple songs. Very inventive and ear-catching without going over the top. Songs like "Lazy," "The Shield," and "No No No" are ear candy for drummers. And that's just a few of many.
The thing is ian is like 70 something uears old and can still bring it as a drummer 1 clip wont show just how unreal a drummer he is but this is a good start cheers
Ian is just an amazing player. His solo on the mule from made in japan is a must listen. Why hasn't anyone trascribed his solos? It would be nice for us who want to learn his techniques.
For a little dude with one lung he’s pretty amazing…He played with Buddy Rich some & was very influenced by Big Bands…He also does the One Hand Roll…Good stuff!…
Go and search Ian Paice’s own youtube channel. A very soft spoken man, with great stories and an amazing technique. It’s interesting to watch him today. His elbows seems to be glued to his sides and the stroke is in the wrist.
Great reaction to one of the greatest rock drummers ever. And you nailed it when you said Buddy Rich all day long, because that was a huge influence on Mr. Ian Paice, whose work within a song was his true magic, ala Danny Carey from Tool.
Paice's early influences include jazz and rock drummers such as Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Bobby Elliott, Ringo Starr and Charles Connor, and later he was inspired by Carmine Appice, Ginger Baker and Mitch Mitchell. He is primarily left-handed with a left-handed drum-kit set-up and uses the matched-grip approach. He is well known for his extremely fast and smooth single and double-stroke rolls as well as single bass pedal speed. He did however perform once with a double-bass setup on the title track of the Fireball album and was performed live occasionally. He is also known for perfecting the one-handed roll as demonstrated on a Drummers World video.
One of the greats. He is very influenced by the great big band players such as Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa and you can definitely hear this in his chops.
Ian uses a French grip. I have seen footage of him using traditional but the German grip is more of an overhand grip. If you want to know who influenced Ian, he is still around and has a youtube channel with a two part video where he talks about drummers who influenced him...as an fyi..now adays drummers and other musicians have evolved into unimaginable talent but in Ian's day he was at the top of the heap..and not alot of rock drummers could do what he did.
My opinion! If it wasn’t for jazz and blues bands like Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Floyd, Hendrix, Grand Funk and ZZ. To me it just proves why we are all here to make things better. So much hate out there on the race topic but again, times like these just proves we are all meant to be together in some way or fashion. Just my opinion
I think Woman From Tokyo is a very nice example of Paice's Fills which I believe Ian was the best at. His one hand Drum Roll he learned from Buddy Rich is something I have never seen any drummer play with that technique. Ian was the fastest at the Rolls. I have always said most the great drummer's last name starts with a P. Paice, Palmer, Peart and Powell. Check out Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Cozy Powell of Rainbow.
The Joe Morello School for Drumming. (Not Real). But He definately seems to have that Jazz influence. Probably Morello and Buddy Rich. And I think everyone that likes Jazz is influenced by Elvin Jones and Art Blakey.
Ian Paice is one of the best rock drummers of all time. Everybody knows that. All true rock and rollers know this. He had more of what they call a swing style or jazz style. John Bonham, for example, was more of a heavy hitter power drummer. Paice is considered technically better. Both are great in their own way. Then Neil from Rush came along and blew them all away, lol.
Neil P. Is extremelly overrated. There are thousands of prog, jazz rock and fusion drummers that can play his stuff...Paice and Bonham had a more peculiar style and much more groove. Defenitely better than N.P.
You should react to the Live version of JOHN Bonzo BONHAM OF LED ZEPPELIN DRUM SOLO Live in AMERICA in THE TUNE CALLED MOBY Dick AND if t Think ian Paice's SOLO is GOOD John Bonzo Bonham's drum solo will AMAZE you
Paice played on a Ludwig Supraphonic LM-402 snare ( 6 1/2 X 14 ) ! Not sure if he's using a standard 20 strand or the 42 strand ). His bass drum is a 26 inch X 14 1/2 or 15 1/2 ! I use a 42 strand on my Supraphonic ! The sound is better with a thicker richer sound . I tune my snare way high like John Bonham, resonant side & tone lower that batter side
Ian paice for me..is the best rock Drummer.
Best drummer in rock music for several decades in my opinion.
Ian Paice is self taught. He started playing drums at 15 played in his dads Big Band and joined Deep Purple at 19. He is about 22 in this clip. Influenced by Buddy Rich & Gene Krupa. He is an incredible drummer 🥁
I read where at one point he did take private lessons from Kenny Clare back in the 1960s.
Paice born in 1948 was almost 24 in this video, and he was 24 when Made in Japan was recorded :D
@@JunkerOnDrumsthis was the same year as MIJ.. just a few months before this is from Copenhagen Denmark march 1972.
Ian Paice is my Favorite drummer period. everyone else comes next!! This guy brings it!
He's surely one of the greatest drummers in the world, extraordinary solo
Ian Paice is a beast! And a unique lefty as well

Definitely the best rock drummer, still rocking hard at the age of 74!
Ian Paice is the best rock drummer ever....
I totally appreciate your appreciation of the godfather of lefty drummers: Ian Paice

He is most definitely NOT underrated.
Ian paice el mejor del mundo sin dudas ❤🎉
That foot.. and those rudiments including single handed rolls, buzz rolls to open rolls... I mean.. yeah.. He's the GOAT

look for his mind blowin' one hand roll!
Ian Paice Ian Paice alright. Yeah. The whole band were more than musicians. Peace

Ian paice semplicemente il MIGLIORE ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
He's left handed. One of the GOATS
the only drummer to roll a single bass drum with 1 pedal
And roll a snare with one hand
Ian Paice the best!

i went to a Deep Purple concert in THE EARLY 70s in MELBOURNE Victoria Australia AND ian Paice did A ONE HANDED DRUM ROLL
Genio!!!!

Fantastic artist, and he had part of his left lung removed at age 6, due to pneumonia which worsened to tuberculosis.

You need to react to the late great Joey Jordison. May he rest in peace. He was an incredible drummer. Would love to see your reaction to him.
