Monkey Wrench probably has the most unique depiction of humans in any scifi series. The idea of humanity inadvertently causing a cataclysmic event so severe that its created a quarantine zone that covers almost a quarter of the galaxy, causing us being declared persona non grata and hunted by every other sapient species is incredibly interesting. I hope this is explored way more in future episodes.
I've seen Titan A.E. Getting your home planet destroyed, then treated as second-class citizens by the universe seems preferable to how humanity f---ed itself here
I don't know, just seems more grounded in reality than anything, humans have shown again and again that they can't be trusted with weapons of mass destruction throughout history. Anyway the way you worded your reply reads to me as though you're implying humans are actively being hunted during the show instead of having already gone extinct, I assume you meant it in past tense?
Was there something I missed in the previous episodes? Exposition in this one felt like humans went extinct because of the cataclysm, or became this nonsapient (?) green virus goo.
I mostly don't understand why people who talk about cartoons aren't talking about this one? Especially when some of those people are constantly on their high horse about "supporting indie animation". It's 3 entire saturday morning cartoon length episodes of high quality.
I feel like there's a connection to what Scratch said about Scritch and him having a "brotherly connection," because like Shrike and Beebs, the cat brothers are also also seemingly close enough to communicate without words.
Yeah. The moment Beebs realized what was gonna happen, he just turned to Shrike and Shrike knew what Beebs wanted: to save Us. Dude went, saved Us along with getting back the arm and granting Them a mercy kill.
YESSSS and it’s honestly a nice change of pace to all those other shows where people don’t know how to work with each other at first and we have to wait until later in the series to see them actually be a team (which isn’t bad per se)
so are we not gonna tal about how the bucket doesnt have straight up blasters attached to it, but has giant robotic arms that use gigantic laser guns instead?
What we know about the Humans: In episode one we see a wanted poster for Terrans wich seems to be the humans names in this universe. So L.A.W is hunting them for whatever terrible things they did
I get the impression that whatever we did, it wasn’t on purpose. Shrike also has a lot of affection for humans and their culture which isn’t normal in this universe and is possibly the last of his kind as well. He is also a Former LAW officer and they’re the ones enforcing the quarantine keeping humans and whatever we did in one chunk of the galaxy. My best guess is Shrike was a victim of this same cataclysm but he got a better picture of what actually happened than anyone else
I think I know what happened I think when we finally met another civilization we thought there was something dangerous so we decided to Nuke them to death but instead we created some kind of cosmic horror the universe has never seen before?
It's honestly sad. We've been so lonely for so long, and the moment we finally find company, it's because we caused an apocalyptic event and now are hunted down like animals, forcing us to forever remain alone and be seen as monsters. (even worse is that it may not even be our fault, maybe law caused it and then pinned the blame on us because we did something they didn't like, hence why they seem so focused on covering up any info on the incident.)
I think it should be pointed out that the only terran artifacts we've seen are a explorers vessel and various entertainment no military weaponry so far
These kinds of shows are great. It's kind of like Space Dandy. Or Cowboy Bebop or Outlaw Star if they were a bit more zany insane. Something about this setting is so attractive. Maybe it's going out with your close knit (though sometimes intolerable) shipmates and doing crazy shit to scrape by. Different jobs instead of the same old crap, a chance to choose what to do, some kind of freedom.
That or earth decided to go full on Stellaris Xenophobia mode on the galaxy and tried to conquer it using whatever methods they could. I’m willing to bet earth is one of L.A.W top enemies with earth itself likely having a couple of allies during its conquest across the galaxy
Terrans are humans, yeah. Nothing exactly has been 100% confirmed except we were involved in some kind of Galaxtic Wide Cataclysm and that it wiped humanity out. We may have been the cause/perpetrators of the event... or got blamed for it since we couldn't defend ourselves after the fact on account of been... you know, gone
The line "Call me Beebs, all my friends do," is such an incredibly sweet line. Brought me damn near to tears, and I can rarely cry no matter how much I want to. Earlier in the episode this was an eldritch, strange enemy assaulting a commrade, later shown to simply be a hurt and lost soul. Without addressing the topic directly, without even missing a beat, just by requesting how Us addresses him; he expresses complete forgiveness, understanding, and compassion. This is an immaculate display of Beebs' character, and I'm definitely getting huge Iroh vibes from the guy. I cannot wait to see more of Beebs.
One thing I realized is that during Scratch's flashback of encountering the Agari, both Us and Them (as well as a freeze-frame shot of their ship) appear to be infected by the Cataclysm, but neither of the three were infected before Them hit the cargo. This is likely due to Scratch's perception that _all_ Agari are infected, mindless drones of the Cataclysm warping that flashback.
ITS ARRIVAL IS IMMINENT, UA-cam PLEASE, HAVE MERCY AND GIVE THIS SHOW THE ATTENTION IT DESERVES *Gasp* I just noticed Gooseworx and Sir Pelo are in the cast, *I’m excited*
I for one will do my part. Like, comment, would sub but that's already done. And rewatch it as much as I can. Wish I had the funds for Patreon. I love this series very much.
I'm not a fan of the random Spanish, but if it turns out he speaks Spanish because he was a alien raised by Spanish speaking humans and that's the reason he's so interesting in Terran stuff than that would be pretty awesome.
I like how each the episode starring characters all have different speech patterns/quirks. Like Nobert had the "ghost egging me" and the "noooo"s, Punti had the uwu voice, and Us speaks in pieces of sentences and uses plural pronouns. It's a good character defining feature *and* it also shows that the translator technology in this universe isn't perfect
on my fourth rewatch i realized the reason beebs can hear "Us" is because of this scene RIGHT here at 10:55, those spores established a sort of psychic connection.
Because this is one of the few indie animations with accurate and fun subtitles i get to show it to my dad who is deaf and i am very grateful for that. its been hard trying to introduce him to my love of modern animation, especially on youtube, and this is one of the shows we look forward to watching together. thanks for that
It's such an awesome detail that on 23:14 you can see Beebs eyes turning red in the pressuring situation and him keeping his cool just like in the latest episode(Ep 4).
Yeah interestingly there’s a few instances of his pupils turning red but his sclera turning red is much rarer to see. It’s only happened twice so far, I think.
How can everybody ignore the TINY bits of info we get about shrike ?! At the start, when Beebs was talking about the only lythop left of his species, shrike just went about how the L.A.W gave him some job and he turned out “just fine “ . Why is this going unnoticed ??!! And how a little later it was mentioned that shrike was an “ex“ law guy and would be very much still active ? Gosh I wanna know what happened and the lore of how he ended up as a merc on some random ship !! This show is way too underrated for real, the writing is amazing and I’m hooked !! 🤩
It was hinted at in episode 2, as well, when he finished the blue guy's sentence. The blue alien asked if he wanted to take over and Shrike said something alon g of the lines of, "I'll pass, I've done it before." I don't remember the exact phrasing. but just 1 word told you he'd been in that position before in a beautifully subtle way.
He said "I don't do that anymore" maybe he used to be some form of enforcement for L.A.W with the rest of his species before something happened to them, making L.A.W give him a mercenary job to ease him of his trauma
What I especially like about this episode is that Shrike has moments, especially at the start, where he's coping with their situation in ways that aren't just deflecting the tension as a character with a more comic lean would usually do. He's clearly rattled and likely has some skeletons in his closet but doesn't give any more than what his bravado allows. It's refreshing and super compelling!
why is everything so *A N I M A T E D??* it looks AMAZING... just the scene where black cat guy and mute cat guy are scanning their shit is fucking amazing man... let alone the rest of the episode, from the fight to the shroom music thingy... i never knew a mushroom could make me cry.
@SephirothRyu they are not saying it's illegal, they are saying "legal studios" in a sense that the "legal studios" have cooperations, networks and a whole other stuff back up they're projects that (while not all kinda suck, a good bit do)are not good and has heart, while independent projects don't have all the "legal" netwoks and funds and stuff. At least that's what i gathered from the comment but i may be wrong
@@hathor8856 Thank you! That was my intent, but with the word "legacy" as with Disney for example. English isn't my first language, so I still make mistakes. Thanks again and happy New Year to you!
This show is too charming to be cancelled. The animation is gorgeous and the comedic timing is on-point. Im gonna try spreading the word about this- I’ve got a plush already and I really hope everyone else supports this in the same way.
The fact that bag had someone’s belongings which clearly depicted the space age makes me think Terrans were misblamed and are also victims of the Cataclysm. I know that people from awful regimes can have mundane lives, but the Cataclysm is implied to be some Eldritch plague/radiation that seems to have some physical form and/or awareness (if Scratch’s lore visuals are to be trusted). If the Terrans really are to blame for it, I’d say it falls squarely on them accidentally unleashing whatever the hell that was, in which case it’s something that could’ve happened to other races.
Love the attention to detail with each new episode. 1. Beebs' arm was damaged in the last fight and they don't have money to fix it. 2. His eyes flashing red when he gets even slightly angered. 3. The clunking of their magna boots ❤❤❤
Its an incredible feat to be able to balance the humour in this episode and the subtle horror and sadness of the agari, Lonely souls who have no one but each other, shadows of what they used to be In a world where nobody understands you and everyone is afraid of you and everything hurts you and all you have is us, all you have is we 10/10 episode for me yall outdid yourselves with the writing Shrike and beebs are adorable Scratch and scritch are delightful The chemistry between these four were absolutely phenomenal they bounce off each other so so well
which makes me believe that humanity might be in the same boat, hence why they latched onto the Agari and attack anyone else: if my theory is right, humanity might be the cataclysm, and now they attack everyone because they're seen as monsters and hunted down, so why not act like the monsters everyone calls them?
15:02 Beebs is sort of correct. Although in the google definition of a mercenary is "a professional soldier hired to serve in a foreign army" the original Latin word for it "mercenarius" means "hireling" and according to the google definition a hireling is "a person employed to do menial work"
The previous episode is where the animation really fit into its shoes, this episode is where the writing did. That was stellar! What in the hell is in that box...
I would assume some sort of Terran's Cataclysm weapon - the same type that made almost every Agari into violent mindless drones. Watching as it can affect life and tech equally, i can see how "humans" are a scary fable in this universe.
I like the amount of trust Bulldog and Shrike have in each other. Like in ‘Ghost Egg’ where Beebs trusted Shrike enough to know Shrike wouldn’t turn on him to get the bounty on Noberts head. This one it’s even more apparent. It took barely any convincing from Beebs for Shrike to start playing the guitar to help him, and how it only took one word from Beebs to get Shrike to know what to do and help Us.
26:10 I love how the dialogue for the Agari has so much depth in this one line. The Agari (mushroom man we see) has been used to referring to themselves and their friend(?) as 'us'. After the death of their friend and their new goal to move on; you can hear their way of speaking change. Instead of "may us meet again" ---> "may WE meet again" Could be reading too much into this, but I love this series and this episode made me sob
Commenting to boost the algorithm, this show really needs more exposure because we don't get quality stuff like this often with passion put into it. Y'all are doing great, please take care of yourselves and let's hope for the best
I love how in this universe, HUMANS seem to be the eldritch horrors from beyond the stars with what they did to the universe and the agari. That's a good subversion of expectations! Oh, and one of my all-time favourite things about this show, is how the space battles are done. The giant, comedic hands do so much more to make it relatable and comedic than anything else I've ever seen. I usually zone out at space-battles because it's just hunks of metals shooting lights at each other, but in this show it's thoroughly entertaining, action-packed and hilarious!
holy shit this show is so underrated! i just heard about it today and immediately became obsessed. i love the characters, the humor, the animation. im telling all my friends about it this seriously deserves way more views
This is my favorite episode yet. The hilarious tension between Shrike and Scratch, the kindness of Beebs. ...the hardships of Us. Very emotional, but very entertaining.
The fact that this thing only has three episodes so far notwithstanding, this show is amazing! Keep up the good work, and hope this new year will give you guys some good fortune.
Masterpiece. This whole cartoon show is a masterpiece!!! I think it's my favorite Animation on the internet. Fun characters, fun humor, great stories, mystery, EXCELLENT ANIMATION! AMAZING!
There is a lot of details in the writing too. I noticed that Episode 2 hints a lot about the humanity storyline. With the rocks being parables for humanity (children made from earth with unique specialties) and the false savior being the representee for the Government. Episode 1 hints that something is off about the way they handled mankind, like we seen in Episode 2 with the Rocks. To capture then kill, is to harvest. Not to mention, they referenced God as a "Trinity", implying that our God is the same as Monkey Wrench's, meaning there is probably some kind of secretive power stored in mankind that other species seek to combine themselves with, like the villain in Episode 2. Maybe to simply have the dominion to rule over the galaxy or humanity's angel-like weapons/technology (episode 3).
No fucking way how did I not see this I just watched the first 2 episodes for first time this morning holy shit my excitement is immeasurable and my day is ecstatic
I don't mean this in a way to put-down the creator or other episodes, but THIS episode was the 1st one to really HOOK me. Shrike & Beebs feel like they're finding their grooves, both in terms of in the narrative AND in their own lives. It's nice to see them using their wits, but also a quiet moment between them. This episode was spectacular. The confidence in their writing is showing, the world is building up, and I'm looking forward to see where Monkey Wrench goes from here😃
I totally agree, the other episodes were pretty good but didn't quite sell me. I seriously hope that episodes going forward have this level of quality.
I think now the story's really starting! I believe that the first two stories were kind of the build-up and an introduction to the characters and their relationship to each other. Can't wait for the next episodes and more characters and more story etc!!
Honestly, I agree. First episode was just a setting intro, second episode theme intro, but this one feels like playing with both, and in the end, giving a compeling story of Shrike and Beebs who are genuinely enjoyable. Beebs being funny straightman, who has internal struggle of understanding if his job is worth it, Shrike being a lovable chaotic good, and everyone else being hillarious in their own way
anyone else notice that after being infected with the cataclysm particles, Beebs eyes glowed red whenever he got mad? Im betting thats going to come back around later.
And the reference on the right is Far-Fetched! An upcoming indie pilot that looks incredible from the teasers so far! I'm so glad to see them get a shout out too! :D
31:00 I am really glad that the cost for the episode and everything else was brought up and not neglected, especially after the completionist fiasco. I hope more animated projects will indie or otherwise adopt this policy because it is good to know where the money is going. So it would be neat if this set the standard so that there would not be any more financial disasters where we do not know where the money we have donated to support them is going. You have my sincere respect for doing this.
Amazing episode! I love to see bigger stories slowly unfold, so I can't wait to see where you take the show! Continue the great work, hope it gets the recognition it deserves!
I love how this show can switch between goofy stuff and genuinely heartfelt stuff without if feeling out of place. This is some top tier quality stuff.
I cannot properly express just how wildly impressive this is, genuinely. The animation, the voice work, the sound design, EVERYTHING just oozes passion, and talent. I've been following your channel for years, ever since being exposed to your content because of Joel, and damn do I wish it was in my income to send more than just kind words, but being a full-time college student and buying food are not good combos when it comes to dispensable income. But good lord, do you deserve every bit of support you do get. Keep doing what you do, man, because you are just spectacular, as are everybody involved in this show. After watching the out-takes a few days ago, I feel it's worth mentioning that everybody on the VA team are incredibly talented! I'm also glad that you reach out to friends like Joel, Gooseworx and Pelo to help take part in these. Obviously Goose and Pelo have more experience with voicework, given what they do, and Joel's role was rather small, but as someone who follows a ton of creators here on YT, it's always cool to see them included in projects like these.
This was honestly one of the best episodes it was so tragic and beautiful, the writing has improved so so much. God I hope this show gets more attention
I noticed that at 12:21 there was a picture of humans in Scratch’s bag. We see how Scratch found the picture at 20:32, which makes me wonder who they are and if they’ll make an appearance? Very neat episode! I loved everything about it, I can see the passion put into it and I can’t wait to see more :D
this is easily one of the most CREATIVE and incredible indie animations i've seen yet, holy COW man.. this is absolutely astounding, i love the character designs, the sound effects, the story, the music, the voice acting, it's stellar across the board, fantastic work guy's
Amazing episode overall! One thing I'm noticing that nobody is mentioning is how the short ending with Kara is genius. Giving both a desire for someone to get to the point while staying silent is quite well done. And the harsh shading after the hint on the next episode with giving the sense of a sinister smile underneath the mask is quite great, since we can only ever see her eyes. 10/10 series that just keeps getting better!

We've been so lonely for so long, and the moment we finally find company, it's because we
caused an apocalyptic event and now are hunted down like animals, forcing us to forever remain alone and be seen as monsters.
(even worse is that it may not even be our fault, maybe law caused it and then pinned the blame on us because we did something they didn't like, hence why they seem so focused on covering up any info on the incident.)
@@apollyonnoctis1291 Knowing us our leaders caused this whole mess and the little people have to pay for it

@@sweetcinnamonpnchkin Right? Especially with how Beebs is basically Jett and Shrike is a more unhinged Spike
So basically terrans are us..earth people and we… unleashed a dangerous monster across the galaxy? Damn
What do you mean?
That or earth decided to go full on Stellaris Xenophobia mode on the galaxy and tried to conquer it using whatever methods they could. I’m willing to bet earth is one of L.A.W top enemies with earth itself likely having a couple of allies during its conquest across the galaxy
Sounds about par for the course, honestly
Nuclear warheads was the poison
@AcceptedGuy-mb8ef thats what it seems like to someone who has the emotional intelligence and empathy of a cucumber.
The Iroh comparison is immaculate. He would be the type of person to want to share tea.
It seems they aren't all infected or at least "US and Them" were able to escape
That fact makes me lean on the idea that humanity didn't cause the Cataclysm, but rather it was an accident or humanity was a victim that got framed
@@javieraravena5345 I hope that is the case

As a mexican, I love Shrike's spanish moments💕 he actually feels like a latin character without even being Terran
As someone who is latina, same, it's fun hearing him talking in spanish ❤

@@BenHopkins1000 - He sounded a bit different back in the DeviantArt tournament days. Similar accent and mannerisms, but less..."squawky".
As a non-Mexican who is relatively disconnected from with the culture, I 100% agree!
I'm not a fan of the random Spanish, but if it turns out he speaks Spanish because he was a alien raised by Spanish speaking humans and that's the reason he's so interesting in Terran stuff than that would be pretty awesome.
Truly insane how this only cost slightly more than Verbalase's video

on my fourth rewatch i realized the reason beebs can hear "Us" is because of this scene RIGHT here at 10:55, those spores established a sort of psychic connection.
Yeah. Kind of interesting tbhwy.
Whoa...
I knew they showed it for something!
It could be foreshadowing too that Beebs might have become infected with whatever the Cataclysm was down the line.
More importantly too, those spores come from "them", so in a way, a small piece of "them" may live on in Bulldog
In 18:10 something similar happens
And here 19:06
Yeah interestingly there’s a few instances of his pupils turning red but his sclera turning red is much rarer to see. It’s only happened twice so far, I think.
I guess that must be a trait His alien species has sunce anither character who was the same species as him also had their eyes turn red
I love how everyone was:
• Crying.
• Internally freaking out.
• Playing the guitar like nothing is wrong.
Yes!! The writing is SO good!
Last ep they also mentioned the crystal in his head. And that it may be a lythop related thing.
Considering he’s also the mother crystal lol.
Also that Beebs is recovering from some seemingly pretty significant losses...
Exactly! Like how he was saying the "No regrets" stuff, but his expression just said so much more. Love the animators and Jacob adding this detail

Love the attention to detail with each new episode.

which makes me believe that humanity might be in the same boat, hence why they latched onto the Agari and attack anyone else: if my theory is right, humanity might be the cataclysm, and now they attack everyone because they're seen as monsters and hunted down, so why not act like the monsters everyone calls them?

15:02 Beebs is sort of correct. Although in the google definition of a mercenary is "a professional soldier hired to serve in a foreign army" the original Latin word for it "mercenarius" means "hireling" and according to the google definition a hireling is "a person employed to do menial work"
The previous episode is where the animation really fit into its shoes, this episode is where the writing did. That was stellar!
What in the hell is in that box...
What's in the box? Probably just DOOOOOOOOOM! Or something doom-adjacent from the quarantine zone or something. But most likely doom.
I think that box holds whatever caused the Cataclysm, which i'm guessing is *nuke stuff*
Seems like a sample of cataclysm.
WHATS IN THE BOX?!?
I did NOT expect this episode to get so emotional.
Same. The first episode had me expecting something much more comedic. Was not prepared for these last 2 episodes to hit me in the feels.

The giant, comedic hands do so much more to make it relatable and comedic than anything else I've ever seen. This was awesome work everyone! I love the details of the zero gravity hair being a constant wavy mess.
