I actually didn't think the stock pickups sounded too bad in this guitar (a '13 Japan-market Genesis Series RG550 - they're actually a V1/V2 set, I accidentally labelled them as a V7/V8 in the video), but I wanted something a little more obnoxious and over the top, both looking and sounding.
This was recorded with a SM57 and a MD421 through a BAE 1073MP, with the 421 about -2.5db behind the SM57, through an Apogee Ensemble. There was a Sonimus Britson channel strip sim (with no low or high pass) and a light delay on the guitar bus, and then I "mastered" the audio up to CD volume, but there was no other post processing on the guitars, so these are pretty true to life.
Great playing! Thanks for making this one.
Nice video and good playing! I have several RG550's from the 1987, the Originals, and Love them All. #1 I kept original, V1-V2 setup. #2 I call EVO, because I did the EVO setup. #3 Tone Zone-Air Norton setup. #4 is still in the thinking process, so I wanted to hear the EVO 2's. You did a great job with this. I personally like a guitar to be a Little Out Of Control and wrestling it in, BUT having the ability for it to be Over the Top. So, here's my input... I still call #1----#1 because it Completely Awesome! The V1-V2 pickups are incredible and I have NO IDEA why they changed them. It's my GO TO guitar! #2 EVO is Extremely useful, Nice high-end and Harmonics everywhere! #3 Tone Zone bridge-Air Norton ( the Satch setup) is Also Very useful, But much more Tamed. I was thinking about the EVO 2's , but now I think they will be a bit Too Tame for me. This is why I love these types of videos and you good people that do them. Thank you
The V1-V2 set were actually quite a bit better than I expected, but they weren't really the sound I was after. Also, Satch is a PAF Pro/Fred guy, for some reason the Air Norton/Tone Zone was the de facto Jemsite setup back in the day...
Nice playing and useful video. I love the evo bridge 🤘
Thanks man!
Dream Theater brotherhood!
Didn't think the stock were bad, but geez. What a change in tone color.
Like pulling a wet blanket off the guitar
I have an RG470 that I bought back in 93. It has the V7 (neck), S1 (middle) and V8 (bridge) pickups. I have been looking for about a year. I really like the Dark Matter 2 and the JS series pickups, just can't make up my mind. The V8 is just too thin, especially when playing a power Chord. Notes are just to think also.
I love the original Evolution.
Best $350 I've ever spent the evolutions sound amazing in my jem! I have dimarzio liquid fire and a crunch lab in one of my other guitars some of the best sounding pickups you'll ever hear
What bridge pickup do you suggest to pair with Dimarzio Liuqifire (in the neck)? I have been looking at super distortion, tone zone, crunch lab, evolution and evo 2 .
I liked Evo 2 in bridge (also my guitar with this pickup too) but stock neck and middle pickups sounds better for me.
yeah, the stock pickups here were way better than I expected them to be, they really weren't bad at all.
Just the video I was looking for, thanks! Ive got the exact same guitar and trying to decide between the Evo, PAF pro and gravity storm. Also, green or purple?
Same here. What did you get?
Hey man did you do any special or different wiring for the evos? I wired them like dimarzios usually are wired up on my rg genesis which is the same road flare red as yours coincidentally so lol and my 2 and 4 positions sound out of phase as if I have a wah wah brian may high ass trebly tone😬. I just am wondering if I did something wrong. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
Nothing unusual - if it's position 2 and 4, that sounds like the issue is likely with the middle singlecoil. Could be something hooked up backwards, could be the polarity of the single coil, and this was so long ago that I honestly don't remember if the typical Ibanez wiring calls for a RWRP middle singlecoil or not, but that'd be where I'd start.
I so want to use the EVO 2 with an HSS setup I just don't know what will work with that humbucker in that setup. Sounds great!
Thank you! I'd say maybe give the Heavy Blues 2 a try - they're a little darker and quite a bit hotter than most singlecoils so I think they'd balance well with a humbucker. I thought they recorded really well, too.
@@drewpeterson7 between that and the injector neck I’m going to see what best suits me. Thanks for the suggestion
I wish you had framed a little tighter so that we could see more detail
Really not much detail to see here, unless you wanted just a closeup of the guitar body and my picking hand or something, and then camera aperture would get wonky.
Nice thanks.
I have this same guitar and stuck an evo2 in the bridge, wow. Thinking Evo neck or paf pro.
Hi Drew, thanks for the nice video, it's really helpful! I also notice you have another Ibanez Prestige guitar hanging on the wall, do you think there's any difference between the Genesis Collection and Prestige regarding the neck treatments/feels? Cheers!
Honestly, it's tough to compare them objectively... The Prestige is a RG3120 with a 1998 serial number, and the Genesis series is one of the 2013 Japanese market reissues. One's five years old, the other's 15. They're both very well made guitars that play very well, however I suspect the biggest differences between them are either due to specs, or just idiosyncrasies of the finishing process.
@@drewpeterson7 Thanks Drew for the reply
@@jimmiehong Yeah, of course - hope it helped!
Nice...
is there always a strong compresion in the clean sound with this pickups?
I do feel like the Evo is a little more compressed feeling than the PAF Pro. Other than that, no compression in the mix, though there's some limiting on the master file. And, of course, this isn't an especially clean tone, so the amp is compressing the guitar a little.
Drew Peterson thank you!
My input in the cleans the vh8 and mid pups were great the vh7 bridge or 8 sounds very flat eqd and a bit overwound, the evo s didnt do nothing for me in the cleans apart from the bridge pup that sounded a lot better than the vh bridge ,,, but in drive mode the evo neck was far better but the evo bridge against the vh bridge wasnt a massive jump ,, the power of the evo 2 us exactly what I want to replace my vh pickup
The stock pickups really were better than I expected, but I dug these a bit more - especially when I swapped the Evo neck for a PAF Pro.
Can someone identify the blueish guitar at the wall?
The RG? That's a RG3120TW.
Hey Drew,
thank you very, very much for letting me know. Usually I find out myself. This one's gorgeous.
BTW: Very useful video and great tone!
@@iloveitall Thank you!
Great vid!
Whats the difference in the evo 1 and the evo 2
Well, it's 1 louder.
The Evo 2 is a little softer and a little less... "always on 10," I guess? The Evo absolutely screams, but while the Evo2 is still pretty aggressive, it's not quite as present in the high end and is maybe a little more balanced sounding for that.
@@vincelupone I read that in Nigel's voice.
Shoulda got the non-diet EVO.
The sound will always bring you PTSD, like at 3:26.
Might as well be sounding like a fire in a soda factory.
You know, I did go back and forth on that for a littler, and almost went with the original since, well, this IS a neon red guitar (even if the camera sensor is getting totally blown out here). And it's always possible down the road I'll still change it up, but I think the 2 splits the difference pretty well between the sort of sound I usually go for, and the screaming top end of an Evo. It's oddly EVH-esq, actually.
Drew Peterson As long as it makes you happy it's working great! I just personally found that the EVO was best when I wasnt trying to make it smooth and nice. Kind of like a 6505, actually, funny you should mention Eddie!
Absolutely. And, you know, ironically, it was the Evo *neck* that ultimately I didn't get on with, and is going back to Dimarzio for a PAF Pro. Go figure, haha.
actually I think that the combo paf pro-evo2 is nice and more smooth and dynamic, as evo dp158-evo dp159 are nice for scream and shred for distorsion.
Do you try followings :
- Evo 2 bridge
- Paf Pro neck
?
That's what I'm using in this guitar now, I eventually swapped out the Evo neck for a PAF Pro.
Drew Peterson so Evo 2 bridge & Paf Pro neck still the best combination?
@@marcel_satyagraha Not sure there's a "best" combination, but I still have it in this particular guitar. It's a pretty over-thet-top guitar, and the pickups seem to work for that.
Thanks man, all the best for you
