Funny story. I first heard the music for Johnny Cash's version of NIN's "Hurt" in the PTC at UMass nineteen years ago. I first heard of the name Johnny Cash in the film Apollo 13 in 1995, so I knew of a country singer. He was still chugging at the time--becoming very devout and pious in the Christian faith towards the end of his life, too.
And, so I was wandering the halls, still giddy and unable to sit down for long, but I did hear the video from out the hall. I kept going back and forth between the pay phone and the hall in case the patients' loved ones called, asking for them--this in the days before pocket-computer phones were widespread. I would relay the messages.
So, I heard Johnny Cash's Hurt and I'm thinking, "Damn, that's super downbeat. But it's still awesome." I never got into music--my parents were folk singers, their friends showed up to play late at night, my ears are very sensitive, the house had its walls stripped for lead paint but they were not replaced during my childhood, and I heard stories of prominent rock stars leading irresolute lives--but this changed.
I looked him up. He was on the way out at the time, but I discovered that Johnny made an independent short film about the Passion (i.e. Christ's crucifixion) back in the seventies. I read about this around the time Mel Gibson made The Passion of the Christ (which I hear has a legitimate horror angle to the presentation).
I began to download whatever music wasn't nailed down and on fire by copyright, even though I never sided with Lars about Napster. Even funnier, I read a news report about him suing over Metallica having exclusive rights to the E Chord. The article was a hoax transmitted to news aggregate sides by a born-again Christian musician. Holy shit, even Christians think music distribution should be freer.
Most songs I'd download came from Newgrounds, back when my brother and I wanted to release flash animations there. All this because I heard Johnny Cash singing "Hurt" in the PTC at UMass. It presented me with something to shoot for later in life.
But, set NIN aside. If you want an Industrial Metal CD worth a listen, try W.A.S.P.'s "Kill, Fuck, Die" online. That band has always been savage. Strangely enough, even front-man Blackie Lawless eventually became born-again (raised Baptist). Look up The Rageholic's Metal Mythos episode of W.A.S.P. They're glorious.
And so is this track. It's hard to take in the original track's morbidity with the sound font, but that gives it an impeccably good-humored charm.
I heard this exact version of this video posted by someone else like 4 hours ago but it just went private
@@bahlsakc9595 It was a bit different, being instead based on the Cash version. Very similar though, I’m sad the video is private now
@@bahlsakc9595 Oh, is that what happened to it? Shame, I really liked that version. Could almost hear Cash singing in it (perhaps some stupid copyright algorithm thought the same thing, and struck it down).
@@christopherthibeault7502 this was a great story, thank you for sharing
This is what plays in simple flips head when he forgets to set the timer
Or when Jules Conroy doesn’t get front sub.
if you thought Johnny Cash's cover was good, now just imagine Mario singing it. Perfection
I-ah wear this-a crown
of SPAGHETT
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a WAHOO!
every princess ia know goes away ina de end
This is what I was hoping for when the first one that got deleted showed up. lol
And yoooou can have it all!
My empire, Q*Bert!
I will fall way down
Your speed-run will hurt...
This will play in the Mario movie at the end of the second act when Mario is at his lowest point before the triumphant return and victory in the climax
Desperately need more SM64 NIN covers.
Really hope you do Wish someday.
I could not agree more.
I don't care what anyone says, and no disrespect to Johnny Cash, but the original will always be my favorite.
Ok but this is a meme video so no one asked
I've gotten into arguments with people because I said the same thing, lol
@@dethteck2263 but you still cared tho
Yeah, but you have to respect that it was a song meant for him, but yes for the creepy laggy sound to it, and Trent’s, whisper singing gives me more chills.
@@dethteck2263 :,(
I
Warped myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the princess
The only thing that’s-a-real
The toadpike tears a whole
That old familiar sting
Try to squash it all away
But I remember everything
You could have every star
A Princess's cake
When you glitch through the door
With a BLJ
And you could have it all. My kingdom of mushrooms
If I could jump again
A million pipes away
I would fall on spikes
I would find a warp
This is really well done. Felt like listening to hurt for the first time again in a way
Makes me very glad to hear that.
I...
...burned my ass today
Gonna need this on a Doom map.
Also, I'm now realizing that I want to hear a MIDI version of "March of the Pigs" from this same album
I don't know how old you are if you are asking for a midi version of March of the Pigs off a NIN album from 1994, but back in the early/mid 90's when DOOM first came out and my Doom Old Man ass was a fresh faced literal Doom Kid myself, I used to make deathmatch levels all the time and pass the WAD files out to my friends at school on 3.5"floppy disks. Then when we would get out of school, we would set up online matches with my new levels and tie up our respective phone lines all afternoon... Anyway, one popular thing to do was download a program called Midi2Mus which would convert midi files into .mus format which is what Doom uses. You could find websites that hosted midi song files that people made just for fun and their own enjoyment. Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, White Zombie, Pantera and even Nine Inch Nails. Quite a few WAD makers, myself included, would download the midi files and run them through that program I mentioned and change the Bobby Prince tracks into the real tracks he "borrowed" from, or just whatever music we felt like... Anyway... Yeah... I'm old as shit, bruh.
TL;DR : I've heard March of the Pigs on a few different old school Doom WADs and now I have gray hair, saggy balls and arthritis... Skol!
@@TheCreature667 I'm late reading this, but what an excellent comment..!
the fact its the water sound style is perfect..... water levels hurt man
With all the albums being covered with the mario 64 soundfont now, I'd love to see a cover of the entire downward spiral album
Doomkid never ceases to amaze me with these wacky but still really enjoyable MIDIs.
Still one of my absolute favorite albums to this day. Some how, this version makes the song seem more haunting.
This content is absolute fire. omfg. I've covered this song before; its differences from the Cash version are subtle but important, and you've recognized them. I dig it!
the ending was like we jumped into shifting sand land
The Dire, Dire Docks / Jolly Roger Bay chime used as the main instrument here is such a perfect decision.
Toad looks to Mario, in the holding chamber next to his in Koopa's castle, and asks him bluntly, "What are you in for?"
Mario's response would haunt Toad's memory for the rest of his time on God's green mushroom kingdom, as the mustachioed hero, at his lowest, bluntly replied,
"Everything."
-The season 2 ending of the 2013 sci-fi comedy series, Mario and Luigi
full of poisoned mushrooms, I... cannot respawn
duuude I remember your comment on the cash version, you actually did it :D
I just had to!
cash version is privated now, the day after I discovered it, sad :(
The comment I made there became my most liked one ever. There was a thread of fake lyrics and everything.
@@jakobphillips3204 fake lyrics on that video were hilarious
Toad Reznor: I warp myself today
Those first 3 notes 23 seconds in hit me like a ton of bricks
If you look at the channel watermark, you'll notice that Bowser didn't read the lyrics and is on his way to regret.
I recently saw NIN live at the blossom music center in ohio. It was awesome.
I’m jealous!
One of the saddest songs ever creates made into a somber water level soundtrack, lol
Holy shit, this one’s waaay better then the one I posted!! Lmao well done man 👏
Thank you!
I listened to this today while farming. Really enjoyed it! It completely surprised me. I remember the sounds of Mario 64, but I didn't would've never guessed NIN - Hurt would be so awesome in this Soundfont. You should check out where someone put System Shock ost - Energy Systems into the Turok 64 soundfont. It's pretty legit! Makes me feel like I'm going to ride into war.
That is a really awesome fusion, System Shock and Turok. I'll check that out!
This is what this song would’ve sounded like had it been on Pretty Hate Machine.
Sounds like a really really secret water level in Mario 64. This is good!
I did not expect this at all.
I also did not expect it would actually sound good???
Jolly Roger's Bay and The Dire,Dire,Docks.
A fog rolls and sifts across the Sands of the beach.
Mario can hardly see in front of him. Walking for what seems ages....the waves crashing against the shore.
All of a sudden, the fog starts to clear enough to make out
the outline of the tattered old Jolly Rogers sat afloat.
Rocking and Creaking as the tide nuzzles against her Hull.
He then steps aboard the old Ship and begins to explore it's depths.... taking in its beauty.
Realizing just how Grand the old ship really was.
Sadly reminded how the ravages of Time have Hurt the Once Mighty Ship.
You paint the image perfectly
@@DoomKid
Thank you.
The video of Rooster by Alice in Chains in the SM64 Soundfont also is a CLASSIC.
Full Stop.
Rooster is a Heavy duty song as it is in either it's Original or Unplugged form....
The SM64 S.f. paired to Rooster is Sublime and Supreme Bliss.
You create Epic mixes.
Emotional.
you gotta do the becoming by nine inch nails that has to sound great with the soundfont
This song will always be good no matter who sings it
This was a great choice for a song. Mario nostalgia mixed with Music nostalgia and very emotional.
Thanks for uploading these!
Thank you Mat, I’m glad you like them man!
What have I become
My empire of *YAHOO*
Isn't this the song that plays when Mario finds Luigi's dead body at the bottom of Dire Dire Docks?
Track 14: Lost
Artist: Nine Inch Pipes
Album: The Downward Goomba
Actually sounds great
Me when the princess is in another castle
No dislikes because this is perfect
Hey, I saw you in the other's comments, the other's been privated since then. Any idea why? It was so good, this is good too but, I wish I could have both.
I'd like to hear it again as well
I hurt myself today
don't mean to disrespect cash or nin, but the original right here is still my favorite
Hey, nice one. little question What Daw did you use and which Soundfont player/vst?
For these videos I use a very simple MIDI sequencer called Sekaiju, and then convert them to a high quality MP3 for UA-cam using VirtualMIDISynth with the soundfont loaded
This is great! Would you mind if I use this as an outro. Full credit of course.
Absolutely!
@@DoomKid Thanks!
I wear this one-up of shit
In Peach’s palace
Full of lost lives
I cannot repair
Not sure what happened to the cash version
Sounds like Atom+ His Package covering NIN
I wonder how some 90's nu metal would go? Like "In the End" - linkin Perk
That’s a great idea
Dreamy
Please can you put the johnny cash version on?? 😢 I preferred that composition
I'm sorry, I don't have it
Doomkid>johnny>trent. There i said it.
Lmao!
shock horror!
I love arguing with people that Johnny Cash wrote this song, it's hilarious how mad people get
