One of the most profound sayings I've ever read was on poster in the medical office: "For those who fight for it, Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know."
So true.
To Richard Canton WOW! So simple so true so perfect! Thx
Excellent and profound!!!
Someone needs to draw biden's attention to that saying , but if he's cognitively impaired no effect....
Right. I got that saying on a bumper sticker from Sgt. Grit several years ago. Of course bullets and mortars seeking you out makes you kinda humble.
"The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his' --- General George S. Patton
HOOO RAHHH!!!
In the Marine Corps, I recall a drill instructor saying something along the lines of “it is truly an honor to die for your country. Being gentlemen, we give that honor to our enemy.”
“There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing and be nothing.”

Funny when someone does that his mates thinks he"s weak and stupid, can't stand up for himself.

Cpt Richard "Dick" Winters, E company of the 506th Regiment.
Before a battle in the English civil war( Cavaliers vs Roundheads) one officer( don't remember his name) spoke this prayer:' Lord, thou knowest how busy I must be this day. If I forget thee, do not thou forget me'. Kinda says it all.
No wonder you don't remember his name, sir! You were too busy fighting!

It's worth noting that when Audie Murphy said his quote he was standing on top of a BURNING tank destroyer, that could have exploded at any time, using it's .50cal machine gun to hold off the German tank infantry and using the artillery to hold off the tanks.
'To hell and back' is the only war movie I know of where the war hero is played by the man himself.
I've read that Murphy had to be talked into playing that role -- he wanted his friend, Tony Curtis to take the role, as he thought playing himself was arrogant and disrespectful to what his Medal of Honor represented. It took both Curtis and the director to change Murphy's mind.
theres also a song about him too called To Hell and Back by Sabaton
"Operation Swallow: The Battle for Heavy Water" movie from 1948 where the actors were the ones who did the actual sabotage during the war.

My Uncle John was EX-SAS. When he was in his seventies, two guys followed him home from a local bar to mug him. When he put his key in his flat door with his back to them, they jumped him. When they heard the screams for help, the two ladies in the flat above rushed down to help him. They found the two guys on the ground and Uncle John standing over the terrified duo with a large knife, growling, 'Get up on your hind legs and die like men !' They were fighting as rebels from the mountains.
_"If you just hold the phone a minute, I'll let you talk to one of the bastards!"_ - Audie Murphy
This is one of the most Army Infantry responses I've ever heard, and it reminds me of a military joke:
The president is sitting with his top military advisors and he asks his commanders, "Who has the strongest and bravest troops?"
The Navy Admiral speaks up first and says, "Sir, the Navy does." The admiral calls in his sailor aide and tells him, "Do 50 push-ups in a minute!" The sailor drops to the floor and knocks out 50 push-ups in one minute.
The Air Force general shakes his head and says, "Sir, the Air Force does." The Air Force general calls in his airman and tells him, do _sixty_ side straddle hops in a minute, and tell your Commander-in-Chief how you load bombs onto our jets." The airman begins doing jumping jacks and explains the process of how a bomb payload is equipped. After a minute, he concludes.
The Marine Corps general snorts in disgust and calls in a grunt. "Sir, this Infantryman will kill anyone we tell him to. And he's stronger than these pussies. Marine, give me 100 pushups in under a minute!" The Marine Infantryman responds, "Sir, yes, sir!" and knocks out over 100 push-ups before the minute is over.
The room is silent and no one speaks for a while. Then the president looks over at the Army general and says, "Well, General, how strong and brave are your soldiers?"
The Army general flicks a pen off the table and it flops to the floor. He looks over at his grunt and says, "Private, pick my pen up."
The Army grunt responds, "Fuck you, sir. I didn't put it there."
So the Army grunt might be a shitbird but he also could be a big hero. Is that the lesson here?? (USMC 1966-72)

Here's one from an "ordinary" (yet very extraordinary) British soldier, when corporal Sidney "Basher" Bates, 1st Norfolk Regiment, won a Victoria Cross.
The Norfolks were heavily outnumbered, and under attack from the 10th SS Panzer Division, supported by infantry, advancing under cover of their tanks. The man standing next to Bates was killed, and Bates said "you stay here, I'm going to sort this fucking lot out".....he jumped up, holding a light machine gun, and advanced towards the tanks and infantry, firing as he walked.
He was hit, fell, fitted a new magazine, jumped up, and advanced again, firing, until he was hit again, and went down.....he carried on firing, was hit a third time, but still continued to fire.
His attack helped the Norfolks to stop the advance, and "restore the situation".
Bates died from his injuries 2 days later, in hospital....
