biomorph was such a cool game. I wish it was a little longer (even though it was a really good length, just didn't want it to end), Also last bosses were not as challenging as the initial bosses
Surprised to see Monster Sanctuary isn't there, it might be my favourite indie game of all time. Valdis Story is a terrific indie metroidvenia too, especially when you unlock the two additional characters
New viewer here, the list is extremely confusing considering you said you liked Lost Ruins but put it in F tier for mainly not being a metroidvania? Does that mean S-tier just means it acts more like a metroidvania than the rest of the games. How much does quality actually weigh into a game’s ranking? Not sure if I missed an explanation if the tiers meant something, but F-tier should be renamed something like “not a metroidvania” if that’s its intended purpose.
Disagree with Lost Ruins at F. It’s a fun game, like you said, pretty good run time (around 7-8 hours opening the whole map and doing all those side quests), starts hard and gets easier with all the things you find. Plenty of gated places that you need to have an item/spell to open - you run back and forth to get to them. It felt pretty MV to me. Anyway, B- for me.
I don't know how to put it, but it didn't completely feel like a MV to me either. The only blocked sections I remember, were the breakable walls and you could get a dynamite from the nearest vending machine, you didn't need to explore to find a new ability and come back to them. I liked the game a lot though, especially the extra modes after the ending. As for the list placement, maybe this, and all the other non-MVs should be in F, on their own, to denote the difference, and proper MVs, even the worst ones, to go to D and above.
Biomorph is kind of another Afterimage for me. It does some really important things extremely well (combat and exploration are top tier in both) but the whole package doesn’t coalesce into something that memorable. Enjoyed your opinions as usual and looking forward to your take on the recent Nine Sols in the future; the first MV in a while that has nailed everything and easily part of my top 10 now.
Dang. You liked Nine Sols that much? That’s awesome! I just beat the bird lady with the 2 zombies. I’m assuming it’s a really long game and that I have a ways to go, but I’m really enjoying it.
Ah, nice to hear you're already playing! I'd say it's a 25 - 30 hour game depending on how long some of the tougher bosses take. Not Afterimage or HK length but decent. It really nails the key elements I personally look for in a top flight MV; good combat, exploration, platforming & upgrades all wrapped up in an evocative world with interesting lore. That last bit is really important to put a game in the highest tier for me, assuming everything else is decent. It's why Blasphemous, Ender Lilles, HK & La Mulana are among my favourites.
I feel like you should have a "not a metroidvania" tier. A lot of great games get put into the F tier unnecessarily because of that imo, whereas I get this is a metroidvania tier list, but just feels unfair to be in F tier even when it's a great game otherwise.
Did I hear Capra Demon? That was the hardest fight for me in the whole game..... I died like 45 times.. maybe much more it was long ago? but after that something clicked in me and I understood the game better.
Personally if a game is good at what MVs are good at (such as exploration or level design) but technically not an MV id only drop one or at most 2 tiers for not being one. Such as Dark Souls 1 which i would argue is a borderline/honorary/"stealth MV". so id give it an A- or B+
Fun fact I have played every single 2D Castlevania game except for Symphony of the Night because it's one of the only ones that has never been accessible on the systems I use and the Android Port was crap

Super Metroid is one of my favorite games that i do actually play a lot regularly via the randomizer, a lot of people say its their favorite but rarely even play it, and i can say for sure the game isn't as perfect as people claim they need to play more stuff
Maybe I missed it but why are you including games on your MV tier list that you don't consider MVs? There's already more than enough MV games to get through.
Couple reasons: 1.) Clarification. If you look up reviews for Lost Ruins, I guarantee they’ll pretty much all be headlined, “Survival Metroidvania.” I wanted to make it clear it’s not 2.) But maybe it is. I’ve gotten comments and messages telling me to reconsider. So I like to hear what others takes are. I hope this helps.
They were excellent for their time but others games have actually ascended the original definitions and they really redefine the genre. It’s no disrespect to be on the A tier. But it goes to show where the genre has gone and what we are evolving to.

Blasphemous on tier S and Symphony of the Night and Super Metroid oh tier A is simply a blasphemy. The rest is okay.
