I recently saw one on tumblr where a creator made a temperature blanket all in white... they'd denominated the temperatures with different stitches per temp, as opposed to different colors per temp. Thought it was actually pretty neat, a hot take

Funny coincidence to stumble over this concept today. Just yesterday, I read in the newspaper that a woman has been knitting a scarf over the last year, two rows everyday, with the colours based on how many minutes delayed her commuters train was that day. (Spoiler alert, the result is not flattering for the railway company.) Same idea but with a vindictive streak if that’s something you find motivating.

Oooh! My city's train network would not be happy AT ALL if people did this! Hmmm, might be an idea, though; Metro Trains (Melbourne, Australia) might be forced to change their ways if a group of people all send them the visual results of their chronic lateness...

Weather Underground gives temperature history for every location. I actually found temperatures for my oldest granddaughter from twenty years ago. I’ve made one of these for each of my five grandchildren, a grandniece and grandnephew, in many different color spectrums. The time frame commemorated their first year of life. Every one turned out beautiful. I love the idea of twelve blocks. I might try that if I ever make another one. The way I managed yarn quantity was to do a test row, pull it out and measure it so I knew how much yarn I needed for one row. I created a spreadsheet chart with each day and the temp and color, counted the number of rows for each color to see how much yarn I would need. Then I “did the math” based on the yardage in each ball. The prep time took an hour or two, but was worth it. If you’re doing one for a coming year, you can estimate by creating an initial chart based on average temps and then correct it with real temps as you know them (that’s how I di the one for my newest grandson). Also, I put a pretty border on when I was done, which makes a big difference in the finished product.

Why not do a temperature blanket that reflects your mood from day-to-day throughout the year? I think that would be more interesting than reflecting the temperature outside. I guess I could see how it could be discouraging and depressing but I would rather see my true nature throughout the year rather than actual temperatures reflected. That would be something that you would keep and remember, a much better keep sake because it reflects the creator. I don't think I'd do a blanket though.... something with smaller squares or circles I think. This is just me thinking out loud

I have seen a really cool planner at Walmart in the yarn section with the knitting and crochet supplies. It's literally a project planner. You can keep track of your yarn, supplies, and project with it and it's also like a regular monthly planner. I haven't used one yet, but I want to get one! I'm now excited to do one! I want to do one for my daughter for the year she was born. She's 15, a brilliant aspiring game designer and artist and is in to pastel goth so I'll probably look for some great pastel colors. I've seen skull patterns in shawls and what not and I believe I came across a pattern where it was just a granny square style skull. I think she'd love it! I've thought about doing a temperature blanket, but haven't had the courage to do one yet. I think this year will be my year to finally do it. This year she turns 16 so I think it'd be a cool thing to give her as she loves blankets.

I've never heard of this! I was a Geography teacher, so I thought of a graph, where I would crochet up to a certain temperature and the rest would be a main color. That way, I'd get to choose two or several favorite colors. Or you could choose a theme of precipitation, with white for snow days and blue for rain days.

    • @meanqkie2240
      @meanqkie2240 Рік тому +3

Different stitch represents precip type and possibly how much indicated by stitches in a row with a single crochet stitch between? Half inch = one special stitch separated by two plain stitches, one inch = 1special, 1plain. 3 inches =3 specials, 1 plain. I guess you could modify that to suit indefinitely!

I recently saw someone make a temperature blanket where, instead of varying color to indicate temperature, they varied the stitch. They chose one color and then assigned different stitches to different colors. The end result had wonderful effect because they used more textured stitches, like bobble and puff stitches. A neat idea for those concerned about an overwhelming color palette.

@@RavenMeer I love that idea! Also I guess if your chosen brand doesn't have enough range you can fudge it by doing two colors together.

I live in an area which would make me sad to map. It’s changed so much in ten years and for the worse. People who didn’t live here don’t understand, but we had really special weather in a really special place. We’re called the Lost Coast because we’re over 200 miles north of San Fran (still in California), and yet they’re called NorCal. We also differ a lot from SoCal. We rained almost every day, so everything was a rich green. Temperatures were an average of 40-50F. My summer days were spent playing in puddles and mud or watching the rain drops race down the window- betting silently to myself which would win. And the thunderstorms- they were like fireworks! They were so beautiful. I never minded when the power went out. (Our county is pretty poor money-wise, but rich in other things) We would just set up the candles and get out the flashlights and board games.
    It’s completely different now.
We had a major drought along with the rest of California for the first time in as far back as I can remember. Everything turned this ugly yellowish tinge after a while. We used to flood annually, and now we’ll be lucky if we get a 20 rains a year. If I do one of my hometown in a time passed- it’ll be a reminder. If I do it from this year- It’ll be a reminder.

When I made a temperature blanket, I did it for one month and I chose a variegated yarn and picked solid colors that matched. I loved my blanket and gave it to a prayer shawl ministry at my church. This year I am cross-stitching a temperature tree! We’ll see how that goes. LOL

What is a temperature tree? I don't knit or crochet so I am trying to find ways to join in the weather fun!

I have found your video today and you totally inspired me to co a temperature blanket. I have seen them every once in a while but never thought about doing one. Now I have spent some time with swatching and calculating because I was alittle shocked how big a Granny Stripe would be after 365 rows :D
I have ordered all my yarns today (20% off hurray) and caaaaaaan't await to start the blanket.
I have written down the temperatures for each day since Jan 1rst for my city (Vienna) and I found a stunning color chart on Instagram. Found your Facebook group and looking forward to being accepted. I was looking for a nice CAL for a while now so this came sooo handy. Thank you for this great video.

This sounds like an interesting idea! You could get a child involved for a fun way to get them interested in crocheting.

I did a temperature blanket for my Grandson from June 13, 2017 to June 12, 2018 (his first year). I used rainbow palette and I loved it. I will be doing one for his baby brother (July 12, 2018 to July 11, 2019) using the same palette. I record the max temp for each day and then divide it by 7 to get the avg for the week. I look up the info on a monthly basis. Last year I started a temperature shawl. The mistake, I feel, I made was taking the average temperature for the week. I didn't get to use all the colors I wanted. I did not like the way it turned out, but I will use it as a doll blanket for my neighbor's granddaughter (she doesn't know it yet). I will redo it using the same color palette i used for my shawl, but use the daily high. I will crochet a row for each day (365 vs 52) so I can have more variety. Also, I found the wunderground's numbers changed when I would go back and double check. So, I found it better to wait for the month to pass and then get the information.

Hello! I’m a new subscriber. This came up recommended. I’ve been crocheting over 40 years and never heard the term temperature blanket (although yes, I’ve seen them). Anyway, I love it! As I am watching your video you are inspiring me to want to try one myself. I’m in NJ. Thank you for sharing so much with us. You’re lovely, and I enjoy your style of presentation.

Weather Underground is great for charting your yearly temperatures and researching temperatures for a specific year! I made a tally mark for the temperature (high and/or low) and that helped me figure a basic year range to plan colors. I ended up using a 10 degree range per color. I had 12 colors. I did a typical granny square with the daily low as the center and the high in the middle row and typical black as a border to tie it all together. It fits my queen-sized bed.

It’s true you don’t know the range when you live in a Texas! Just had 4 days of 60-70s and back to 40-50s in winter! Lol

I think it's a really cool project, and so interesting to see what it looks like at the end of the year. It could be done as a scarf size with a significantly smaller cast on so that it's not quite so over whelming. I would consider it as a scarf or small wall hanging. Verypink did a couple last year as wall hangings. I'm glad you are moving forward to do it Toni! Sometimes you have to make the projects YOU want to make and not just the items your audience wants. Your crochet and knitting time should still have an element of personal enjoyment and not simply cranking out pattern designs or instagram updates. You are amazing at those things! But don't lose your love and passion for the craft in order to keep creating new content. Best wishes to you and Happy New Year! 🌿

My wife (who has around 100 WIPs (that's just yarn - quilting is a whole other topic!)) started a Temperature Blanket when we moved to Texas in 2015. It was set aside and just this month she picked it up again. She's up to June now!

Ughhh I started two of these blankets and never finished them . I live in south Florida our temps don't fluctuate much at all so temp blanket would become very boring so I decided to do mood blanket . I chose about 12 different moods assigned colors to each mood , I was excited to start thinking i would wind up with a beautiful blanket ..... NOT I quickly got bored and the more i thought about it the idea was a bust ... 365 rows or 365 granny squares no matter what size was going to turn out a HUGE blanket, hard to handle and too big to use . For those of you excited to do this project more power to ya have at it , just wasn't for me

What area are you living? I'm in southern California. I started a temperature blanket in 2017. I used a double crochet stitch. I still have not finished but what I did was keep a log of the temperature on my Color Note app and for the days I did not record the temperature I went to the Weather Underground app. I entered my area it had the actual high & low temperature for that day. I haven't totally given up on this one. I'll finish it some time this year.
I think I will also start a new one this year using the suggestion of color palette of gradual hues of one color. Different hues of my favorite color, lavender. I'll use various hues from lavender through dark purple or maybe blues, Then I'll figure out the stitch I want o use. Not sure yet.

You may want to link up to the #TempestryProject! They are trying to encourage a global movement with people all using the same colors to do tapestries that can show climate change in an easily accessible way. They are beautiful and use good yet affordable wool (Knitpicks Wool of the Andes). They also have an excel sheet that helps you calculate how much yarn you need and instructions on how to get your weather data on NOAA for a given year. In their facebook group, a few people mentioned planning to do blankets instead of tempestries - sounds like a great way to join forces!

It's a great idea. Although I think it I'd like to keep it more personal, like crocheting one this year, and with the same color chart and temps from the same city, doing one from the year I was born (1992). I think seeing the difference would be shocking!
