Burial Waves opened for Jawbox; you can find their video here: • 2022-07.23 Burial Wave...
I've had the good fortune of watching this band throughout their various album releases since the early 90s. My hometown had a small venue that booked indie rock/punk bands and Jawbox always played and brought other DC bands to open.
When I went away to college, I saw them play. While at college radio conferences, I made sure to attend where they played. Hell, when I relocated to DC after graduation, I always made time to watch the band when they announced a show. The last time I saw them was 2019 in Richmond, VA and they brought Hammered Hulls to open.
With my new videography hobby, I was determined to capture this band live. And I'm so glad I did. First off, the band invited Burial Waves to open, who've become my current DC band fave.
I almost didn't shoot this show. I had tickets for Burn in Richmond, but that show got canceled with refunds showing up immediately. With a free Saturday, making the trek back to the Black Cat was a no-brainer after filming Darkest Hour/Zao/Bloodlet a week earlier.
I parked myself stage left, where J Robbins tends to favor. This is opposite where Harlan Brooks tends to play with Kim Coletta in the middle. My view was primarily of J with everyone around him. Zac's playing can be seen behind J and I apologize for his minimization in my video. It's not intentional--just how the shot was framed.
Sound came out better than expected considering I used my trusty Shure mic. Video came out exemplary as usual. In it, you can see glimpses of my neighbor to the left. Every now and then, you'll find him air drumming to the music! I found that entertaining as I continued filming.
I counted 23 songs played during the set! The set list taped near the monitors featured 21 songs and counted two extra during the encore.
I grew up watching this band and was happy seeing them for the umpteenth time. And I'll go out of my way to watch them again should they come around...

Jay is such a guitarist.
Thanks for posting this. Jawbox is one of my favorite bands right now.
Always love Kim. One of my favourite bass players. Great tone and bass lines. (altho can't hear much in this mix) Always looks like she's into it and having fun. The centrepoint of the band for me. When she closes her eyes and notes - unreal, and I don't mean that in any way sleazy. What a musician. . She's up there in the unholy grail with my fave bass players - Squire, David Sims, and Rob Wright
Sorry for the questionable sound! I just started recording at this juncture and was still trying to figure it out...like you, I'm a Jawbox fan and was lucky to have seen the band from the early years to now while living in VA/DC. My friend was their roommate in the 90s and always had great things to say about them as people.
@@iphonearchivist Yea unfortunately I never got to see them
Hang in there, the band will probably tour again in the future. J is tied up with his studio and touring as a solo artist. Plus we're (I'm a couple years younger) all older now which adds things like family obligations, kids, etc.
@@iphonearchivist Yea hopefully they'll come to the UK again. Saw Burning Arlines once. Loved that first album. Quite like Channels too
I am 53 and I got introduced to this band late, courtesy of the Deftones cover of Savory, I then went to find them and was like how the fuck did I miss these guys, and I went and bought everything they released on vinyl. These songs stand up in 2023. I truly love this band.
I too discovered them much later in the game, I got into them through the Band Jawbreaker. The Singer J. Robbins in best friends with Blake the singer from Jawbreaker and they released a split seven Inch together int the early 90's.
Jawbreaker and jawbox. Pinnacle of early 90s post punk.
Supreme
They don't even look like they're trying and they always sound great live. It's crazy how some of these 90's indie-rock bands are not only still around, but actually relevant. For instance, Archers of Loaf, and Superchunk.
I think the 90s indie rock and post-hardcore bands put together the influences of punk, 60s rock and 70s/80s avant-garde together in ways that were really insightful. And they could all make the magic happen live. It will take a generation or two before we see another peak in creative output like that. Jawbox obviously a great example.
They only reunited a couple years ago, so they were broken up for about 20 years.
Hell yeah, thanks for posting
What happened to Bill Barbot? I haven't checked in with these guys in a long time.
Left because of the long commute from his new house to their practice space. Seemed to be totally amicable. They haven't played a show since 2022 but my fingers are crossed.
